I finally got around to watching Episode 4. Very fun and exciting! Better than I expected, honestly.
Himawari is an unusual character - She has the character design of a refined, elegant, socialite "rich girl", but the personality of a shy and very introverted nerd. I don't think I've seen a character quite like that before. Good to see the anime world try some adventurous character concepts! Specifically, Himawari's character design is one of a few that reminds me of Hitomi Shizuki (Hitomi was the first I saw like it, but the oldest character I know like it is MariMite's Shimako). And when "Hitomi Shizuki" docks with Akane Isshiki, we get... "Mami Tomoe". A Mami Tomoe on steroids, really, lol. As a big Madoka Magica fan, I'm very pleased to see how PPPL is continuing to impact the anime world. As you can probably tell from my sig, I'm also a big Superman fan... and wow, the way Akane saved Himawari in this episode was like vintage Superman. And the director perfectly framed Akane catching that metal beam. Very cool. I totally loved it. VRO has been excellent so far. But now that it has the big protagonist introductions out of the way, it'll be interesting to see where it goes next. This show has delivered marvelously so far, but the real challenge comes in showing good teamwork and compelling conflicts after the big intros are done. Quote:
Often in the past, when an anime character acted tsuntsun, it often came off as just mean to me. In other words, the mask wasn't always transparent to me. Now, the tsun mask increasingly is transparent to me. So what once might have seemed like meanness is now coming off as cute (but obvious) false denial of affection. Himawari is no exception here. For all her bluntness, you can tell that she already likes and values her new friends a lot.

Episode 5 was quite heart warming and melancholic at the same time. I honestly wasn't expecting such development from this series. Shows how much I know. Enjoyed it. The hospital scene with the girls and their mother was super cute.

Shyni's question couldn't have come at a better time, so I thank Shyni for it.
VRO (and Madoka Magica) fans might get a kick out of this mash-up vid I just made. *All* of the audio is from Madoka Magica (I muted the VRO audio). Enjoy! I think there's a pretty good chance that Mami Tomoe was an inspiration for Vivid Yellow's character design. But mood-wise, I expect this show to be much less dark and much more lighthearted than Madoka.

My guess Kuroki comes from an alternate dimension where allegedly the Jigen engine destroyed her world.
I don't know about the various translations but Jigen means space-time or dimension. I say allegedly because the bird is the source of the information. And the Alone have the same energy signature as the engine and said to be old and from dimensional gaps. My guess the Alone destroyed her world and is merely using Kuroki. Torturing her over saving one child suggest to me the Alone are genocidal artificial AI that crosses dimensions. |

Also, sorry but the "ethereal" quality of Credens Justitiam just doesn't quite work with the semi-techno aesthetic of this show. |

And Mami's attacks have a semi-techno aesthetic as it is, but her theme still works perfectly fine for her. And so I think it works fine in the mash-up video that I made.

Spoiler for Comparison to Madoka Magica:
It's hard to believe the Alones are the good guys, however, given the way they treat Homurei. Something smells fishy. Crow = Kyuubei? That was a very cute and heartwarming scene indeed. I'm glad the girls still have their mother.

VividYellow just isn't "gunsgunsguns (and/or ribbons)" enough to really say "Mami" for me. Not unless I really need to see Mami anywhere. Last edited by Shyni; 2013-02-08 at 10:54. |

Anyway on to episode 5... Akane trying to pick up another girl for her harem but she playing hard to get. Turns out Rei is a Homura of a different shade more along the line for you average dark magical girl that is. Sold her soul to regain happiness. Also it seem Akane and Momo's mom isn't in as bad a shape as we thought. Thats good and ends with a lovely family hug.

Well... that was ominous. I have no reason to believe that the crow is in any way interested or capable of bringing Rei's world back, nor that destroying the Engine will miraculously undo the destruction of her world. Bird is using her for its own ends, I'm certain of it.
Most amusing to me this episode was Akane singing (sort of) to herself as she cruised along on Wanko.
