Well if you haven't seen them, I recommend two more Ghibli films:
Whisper of the Heart Howl`s Moving Castle The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is a great film, but you need to see the series first to really appreciate it. Summer Wars is pretty good. Eve no Jikan Gekijouban is really good (film adaption of a web series). Trigun: Badlands Rumble is good, though it's probably best to have seen the series first (takes place somewhere in the middle of the show's timeline). Yeah, I guess I somehow overlooked the "older" part in the topic title. Well, Ponyo isn't exactly older. Last edited by jedinat; 2011-06-24 at 01:18. |

2nd to Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. It is from 2010, so it's fairly recent but it is a great movie, and you just feel for Yuki Nagato in this movie.
Older Movies: Ghost In The Shell. The Major is one of my all-time favorite female characters and this movie has action and a really thought-provoking story. The movie asks what it is to be human, and if an AI can develop a soul. It also has great music. Castle of Cagliostro Miyazaki's take on Lupin III. Also the movie that invented the word lolicon. It is a very fun adventure film. Patlabor. Another Mamoru Oshii classic(also directed GitS). It also is possibly the most Real Robot move there is. and only see the following movie if you can MST a movie or really enjoy MST3K, because it's a So Bad It's Good movie... Odin Photon Sailer Starlight It's like Yamato but on a schooner. With the sounds of Loudness as the soundtrack. Has a five minute celebratory scene where they board the ship to "Go Fight Go" or something like that. Movie ends with a Loudness movie video. |

Toki o kakeru shoujo (even better than summer wars imo)
Then it might be different from the ghibli style but I suggest everything done by Satoshi Kon: Tokyo Godfathers Millennium Actress Paprika Perfect Blue Memories If you find Mamoru Oshii's style of your liking you should definitely watch one of his firsts and most famous movies: Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer

Seconding suggestions of Kon and Oshii material.
But yike, no one mentioned Shinkai?! Voices of A Distant Star The Promised Place In Our Earlier Days 5 Centimetres Per Second Amazing what Shinkai is able to achieve by his own means. Macross - Do You Remember Love? was an iconic movie for the 80s. Itano did some very revolutionary animation in that one. Star of Cottonland was a decent shoujo movie from 1984. Wings of Honneiase is one of Ganiax's better efforts, circa late 80s. And if anyone tries to trick you into watching Roots Search, The Flying Ghost Ship or Puss n Boots, they are trolling you.
