Don't feel too bad, I've been playing for three years and haven't even gotten to 3 Dan.

A big part of it is skill, but it's also luck. If you have average luck, you'll never go anywhere. If you have above average luck, you'll improve but only after a long time.

Alvin's bot, which one can argue is one of the best programmed mahjong AI ever, made its way to 2 Dan but is slowly losing ground back toward 1 Dan. It plays everything on odds, so that should say a lot about how important luck is.

Now you made me feel proud for advancing to 5-Dan after 3 months.

Though I'm now stuck in lower 4-Dan (<800 points). It's very hard for my hands to come together, and I really experience that my opponents can ron on any tile I throw.

The only happy thing for me so far in the game is getting my first chankan. Now my aim is to go for a Nagashi mangan.

Start playing without required yaku or furiten, let him get just the basics of the game order/melds, then introduce the more intricate rules as he gets comfortable with the basics.

It also helps to have a set of tiles with Arabic numerals for characters (1,2,3,etc) and "E," "W" letters on the winds. You can find such sets on amazon.com for cheap.

I gave myself a demotion back to 一般 since I just was completely outmatched against the better players in 上級.

But I have been on a roll lately.

My return to 上級 hasn't been all rosy but I'm determined to get from -0.34 back into positive territory.

My reign of terror in 一般, LOL

Got my avg score down to -0.11 before I took a nasty loss earlier. Now the avg score stands at -0.21.

I dealt into a haneman where the guy had two han for having a pung of East (he was dealer) and East was ALSO the dora, LOL

The statement about luck is very true. I still think *some* skill is involved but that ties in with luck (knowing when to make the most out of discards).

Luck's been a main reason for my latest hot streak. I hope it lasts for a while—haven't had numbers as good as these ever before

And one of my winning hands today:

I started playing on Tenhou around a month ago.

I'm not really sure if this is good or not.

Whoa, I just realised how awesome that is.

Out of 20 games, I came 1st 11 times, 2nd 5 times, 3rd 3 times and 4th 1 time.

I doubt I'll ever have a day as good as that again...

I'd kill to have a day as dominant as yours.

平均得点: +3.715

Expect this number to drop precipitously...not trying to come off sounding like a killjoy but on Tenhou, momentum can go both ways--sometimes rather suddenly.

My avg score is back in the negatives, somewhere between -0.23 and -0.18.

Do you have to pay for the ID after a while or something?

It's not letting me play anymore :/

You have to switch from Premium mode to economic mode in the login screen.

You seem to be an all or nothing kind of player there.

My style is more of a small risks with bad luck type sadly

I'm the kind of player who'd rather risk coming last than give up a hand that could boost me up into first place.

Although, if I'm already in last place I usually try to avoid risk and hope someone else deals into another players hand, boosting me to 3rd.
