And yet... and this is referring back to a discussion from a few weeks ago... the story still seems very Miyazaki-like to me. (And that's a compliment, in case you were wondering.) Mononoke Hime had some gruesome moments, too.

I was thinking the whole time he was talking Riko's arm is bent and half cut, as if he was cutting a cake but abandoned it halfway.

Flashbacks to 127 Hours...

oh my freakin god, that was hard to watch. Once the blood started coming out of her ears and eye sockets, I almost wanted to look away.

But we FINALLY get introduced to the fluffy bunny~!

Trivia: The author was inspired by 127 Hours at the time he was writing the corresponding chapter

Surely the most difficult ten minutes of anime I've watched this year. I wanted to turn it off on at least three occasions.

I had to look away several times. Lemony Snicket has nothing on Made in Abyss.

I was ok with the series until this episode, i think isotope it and started it back up a couple times, luckily Nanachi came, thought this was the end for sure. Well agreed that this finally felt like the "abyss". Have to hand it to the author for not keeping it too grim until here Riko has some good ideas, but that umbrella was really to small. O think Reg tends to overthink before he acts which slows his movements. While he isn't in bad shape like Riko i liked how he needs her to not leave him as well, definitely more human than robot.

Well that was unpleasant.

They aren't surviving this journey. I'm just going to presume they all die part way through this and a new main cast takes over to finish the job. This is just an insane venture. Reg doesn't have the knowledge for this. He needs basic information of some of the most well known threats. They just can't afford to stop and have Riko try to explain things when facing off against a predatory beast. The other obvious point is that Riko can't physically handle this journey. The further they go the harder it is going to be to keep her alive.

Definitely a show that makes a point. One of those shows where naturally when you throw people into things that are well above their ability to handle....well things go bad.

Well it's not like people who go down this far are sending instruction manuals back up for the next generation. Ozen hasn't been conscripted to write a survival guide.

Technically, they aren't supposed to be down there at all. Then again, it's not like Riko plans to come up at all.Final Dive for a reason.

Well, they are, actually. That's what Lyza's letter was. And all the rest of the monster and relic info guides that Riko gets all her knowledge from. It's all built from the info sent or brought back by the people who've traveled down into the Abyss. Now, some things they keep secret, like how the white whistles can activate certain relics and certain special details like that, but a lot of info is sent back.

Of course, a lot of it doesn't make it back, as well.

Some of this information though is clearly getting there. Otherwise Riko is just psychic. This thing wasn't a total mystery, Riko could identify it with one look. It allows Reg to be a nice viewer character who needs everything explained to him, but needing everything explained in a situation like this is going to get someone killed.

But honestly most of that is on Riko. She wanted to leave almost instantly. There wasn't any time to prepare Reg in the slightest or give him some information he'd need. There are things that it is impossible to prepare for. Not every bit of information gets back up to the surface. But some information does.

This death march only got worse for them because of the lack of preparation. But there is clearly no going back.

Not to mention the creature literally snuck up on them and then read their movements.

no more ozen which is sad but i finally saw real suffering this ep. It was so glorious and fantastic. That's the shit i wanted to see though i guess reg didn't amputate her arm zzzz. I'm just sad that the main characters are so bland and that i'm hoping this bunny girl can fill the gap left by ozen.

Episode 11:

Nanachi is so useful. Reg is really lucky to find her.

The Curse of the Abyss' 6th layer really seems like a scary place based on what she told Reg. I mean, Mitty is living proof of that. Personally, I think this breather episode was interesting to see how Reg fares on his own for survival with some guidance from Nanachi. Not to mention, we got to see more of the Abyss' creatures.
