Now....THATS HOW YOU DO A MOTHERFUCKIN finale. Wow! That White Whistle is one crazy guy. What Mitty and Nanachi went through was horrible. The sixth layer is so dark. So very dark.
The ending scene was fantastic as well. The OST really is one of the best this season. |

Nanachi was a genius when she was younger if the only books she could read were in glyphs no one else could. The way Bondrewed sounded so calm when he was condemning them to death or mutation was rather screwed up too, and then you saw all of the mutated children and you can't help but think Orochimaru as the girl begged to die from the pain while Nanachi ended up becoming a rabbit girl. For pete's sake, the man didn't seem to grasp telling her that her friend couldn't die after being mashed up was goddamn traumatizing enough that she'd spent all that time trying to kill her like a mini-Kabuto. And then children being forced to Mercy Kill her...
*Curls up into a ball and cries* On another note, Riko has very little sense of personal space. But it was a nice touch that Mitty managed to guide Riko back to the waking world. Though, I could have done without the sight of her wetting herself again when they were removing the mushrooms (though Nanachi did warn it was going to hurt coming off). And that bonus scene of Malaruk, Ozen, and the orphanage kids was touching and anime-original, I believe.

Spoiler for The tears just won't stop....:
Oh my gawd, that was such a grim and gory final episode. It was splendid to watch as it just tugged on my heart strings. I don't think I seen any animes recently besides Re:zero that was this dark. Here's hoping to a 2nd season.

I watched it twice
First time I wasn't feeling it. It was 8/10 in my eyes I wanna kick my ass now, second time I was a lot more emotionally invested. This was 10/10 material, what a great fucking finale.

RIP Mitty, at least you're finally free. Nanachi and Mitty's story was just so emotional that I honestly would not have minded if the entire finale was dedicated to them. The OST only made those emotional moments more powerful.
This Bondrewd guy seems like he would get along pretty well with Orochimaru and I get the feeling that we have only scratched the surface of his crimes.

Yeah, that was just fantastic. Nanachi and Mitty's back-story was heart-wrenching as we found out the reason for their state, Bondrewd carrying out experiments using kids nobody would miss.
The double-length finale really earned those extra minutes and it was still over all too soon. Definitely my favourite anime of the season and I hope we've not seen the last of Riko, Reg and Nanachi in anime form. I like to think the balloon going up carried a request for a second season. |

I thought we were meant to believe that Mitty's soul entered Riko. There were many hints starting from how clingy Riko was with Nanachi and how Nanachi surprisingly didn't care. Reg's reference to Riko's having died once also suggested he thought she might be recepticle for Mitty's soul. I believe that Nanachi joined them because she sensed Mitty would be joining them via Riko. Was I reading too much into this?

No, Mitty's soul was trapped and when Reg freed her, she set off towards the Abyss. Riko, who was forgetting who she was at that point, then remembered everything and broke free of the place she was trapped in, returning to the waking world. Mitty's soul guided her back in that sense.

Wow, on one hand this series has been one of the best in a while. On the other hand the story is so messed up in a cruel/grim way that i wouldn't want to watch it again.
Actually shed some tears there. Though i don't want to experience more sadness i believe i will have to pick up the manga to see what's ahead. Anyone know which chapter this adaptation ended on?

I loved this ending so much, the fact that there wasn't much in terms of words and how you really felt the tragedy of what had happened to Nanachi and Mitty. I knew from the moment he appeared that Bondread was evil and what he had planned for all these kids. I was basically just waiting for the shoe to drop and see how Nanachi finds this out and experiences it herself.
I'm actually rather glad that Riko took a backseat for a while as I think her hyper personality would have clashed and it wouldn't have allowed for the much quieter and shy Nanachi to spread her wings. I cried a few times during the last episode and I don't doubt that I will probably cry more when watching the sequel they seem to be hinting at. Quote:
As to your second part. I think any series needs to be able to stand on its own as a story and as an adaptation. You don't make half a story and then have some sort of implied, invisible arrow having over the series pointing you to read the manga to get the full picture. If a series does that, then it has failed its job as an adaptation. You don't make an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, stop at Act 2, and then have a credit go up saying "If you liked what you saw here, read the book for the ending!" But thankfully I see none of these problems in Made in Abyss. Any plotholes there are look like they will indeed be answered in a future sequel series.

Around middle of chapter 26.
This anime is a 10/10 for me. Amazing work. Hope there will be more. Apparently the staff wants to make more but I guess it's not their decision in the end sadly. You can clearly feel the passion at work here. It's extremly rare for me to pick up a manga when finishing an anime but I might actually check this one out. I wasn't too fond of the character designs at first but I got used to them. However the world building is on whole new level, I really hope more series would explain a fantasy world in more details. it's super interesting. |

I think it make sense, seeing how reckless Riko is, so it's natural if her mother is also super reckless XD
