I have FiOS but it's not available in the Bay Area. You might take a look at Clear, a wireless 4G provider, if you cannot find a decent wireline carrier.

if you care about response times in any way whatsoever (i.e. you play video games on the internet) do not under any circumstances get a wireless connection

it may work fine a lot of the time, but the lag spikes you will inevitably get make it unusable for that kind of thing

I don't know about local ISPs but I use Comcast and they don't suck very much here at all. I've had less than half a dozen outages in a year, which is much more than I can say for other services I've used.

Comcast really isn't bad in the Bay Area. I'm currently using a 50/12 Mbps connection that I pay roughly $60 a month for.

Wait wait how'd you get THAT deal? I'm paying $60 a month for ~20Mbps down and 4-6Mpbs up!

You might be able to get it as well. Worth checking out their website to see if they have any deals going on. I just double checked with my address and they have a pretty nice deal that gives 50 Mbps internet for $50 for 6 months, then $70 per month.

I'll admit that mine first set of numbers was a rough guess as I'm in a double play package that gives me a lot of digital channels along with HBO for about $90 for the first year and then $120 on the second year.
