Holy crap, see, I knew Sumizawa's been reading too much fan fiction. 90% of the fan fics I have read out there has 2xH married, 6x9 having kids, Wu Fei barely given a role (which bothers me to no end, Wu Fei is awesome!), Trowa and Quatre staying by each other's side for the rest of their lives post EW, a 1xR reunion... and Relena a pathetic, hopeless romantic.

(I know it's a rant, but in the spirit of discussion, allow me a rebuttal!)

Hmmm.. I don't see it, sorry. Wufei has plenty of a role in the story- more than Quatre or Trowa anyway; he had an entire fight scene to himself last chapter it looked like, and he was present and helping with exposition the entire time the files were being watched.
As for uh... the 'fic', well, there's a reason everyone had that happening. It was easily predictable- everyone knew it was stuff that was going to happen if you took the events in series and manga to their logical conclusions. I don't get how it's a problem that he followed through on these things, just because it's 15 years later and everyone and their mother has already also followed up on those story threads. In fact, I don't think he's been super predictable at all in his job at following them up. How many of those fic have Hilde divorcing Duo then dying?
As for Relena.. well, the novel is a shift in storytelling style and perspective from the anime- you have narration now, from a new person every chapter. If you took peoples' navelgazing away (which c'mon, that's Sumisawa's and Gundam Wing's staple!), it wouldn't be half as sappy. Also, the bit you quoted is narrated by Duo, so if anything, you should be calling HIM a sap But no, I think she's always been like this. Look at her shiny-eyes at Heero in just about any scene in series, but especially episode 48. I think there's such a negative reaction to *certain aspects of fandom* whining about Relena being either too girly or a bossy bitch that people get neurotic about her portrayals when she shows either side strongly (and I don't necessarily mean you, but in general.) In a situation like that where Heero's going off to die, and with the situation she's in here, you don't think she'd be thinking something like that? And beyond that.... I don't see why it's bad for her to be, as Duo says, sad that the person she loves has to kill her. That IS sad.

(As for why has to be killed now that we know she also wants it, which adds a new dimension to this story now, I have a few guesses as to why that might be- since it's already been mentioned she might be a 'hostage' of sorts.)

This is just my opinion of course, but I keep seeing people talking about how the novel is like 'bad fanfic' yet it's never the elements that are actually problematic (IMO I guess- lazy generation xerox character designs, plot threads referenced all over the place without following up on them) that get brought up!

Well said and I agree.

As entertaining as the novel has been so far, the Generation Xerox characters and seemingly infinite sub-plots, few of which have been revisited much less resolved, have been a little disappointing. There's obviously time for Sumisawa to wrap up the numerous loose ends but I don't understand why he decided to have so many retreads.

Hm, for one thing, Frozen Teardrop is a novel. Of course, it has to be descriptive for the reader to imagine the characters' expression and how they say their lines. This novel will fail in narration for me if all I read are dialogues with no descriptive character expressions. It's definitely different in reading a manga, (although some critical readers go beyond what is drawn in interpreting a character's expressions/actions). And, this isn't the first time Relena said she missed/wanted to see Heero.

It is also interesting to note that this is from Duo's POV ^_^ He sees Relena as pretty in his eyes, and he is well-aware of her feelings to Heero, which I don't think is OOC at all. I would kick Duo if he described Relena as ugly, having a solid face with no emotions at all. Duo did a good job in describing the scene before him, whether he's a 1xR shipper or not xD At least there's one character who is a witness to the relationship of Heero and Relena. And it's kinda nostalgic when he said that 'a cute smile of a girl' had returned to Relena's face, even just for a moment. yes, he feels old, lol.

I still have to fix that translation for proper wordings, but I'll finish the previous pages so I can follow Duo's train of thoughts.

First and foremost, I did call it a rant, so everything I stated that I disliked about what is going on was based on purely personal preference. It's nothing more than venting for me. This. Now that you've mentioned it, you just made me realise that they really are indeed the most logical conclusions. That's one enlightenment for me, cheers. But one thing that still bugs me is Trowa and Quatre 'living together'. I still can't shake off the thought that this is so because Sumizawa is trying to please 3x4 fans. Both with this, and Quatrine and Phobos. Regarding Wu Fei, I do hope that he really does have a role like you say he does. As of now, I can't really see it tbh. Imo, his long-time presence doesn't really mean he has a vital role... at least, as of current. As for his fighting scene, I am glad that he does have one. It was only mentioned briefly in the thread so I didn't think it was covered that much. Which was my mistake seeing as we only get summaries, not the entire chapter. Now, I am relying on that fighting scene and I do hope that he gets more and eventually becomes a huge character in this. Because he IS one of the original mains.

I don't really like how the majority of the fandom puts Wu Fei in the shadows. My guess is that it's because of the fact that he's kind of a jerk in the series and he defected from Team Protagonist in Endless Waltz. But I always thought by the end, he redeemed himself. So why is he the least favourite and so underrated? I'm not a rabid Wu Fei fangirl at all, it's just that I don't see him any less badass than Heero or the others. Why, is it because he went against all-time favourite Heero Yuy? Come on, Heero was a huge jerk as well.

Okay, so that bit up there is not really a Sumizawa criticism. I'm only saying it to explain why I snapped about Wu Fei not having that much of a role as he did in the series.

A lot of her fans do get neurotic when this happens. Don't get me wrong, I do think it is sad that Heero is the one to kill her and that it's natural for her to be hurt about it, but what pissed me off is how it was written. The way it was written, it's as if their "relationship" is one-sided. That it's all Relena. And wow, she's moping about Heero and she begs him to take her life, and Heero, my gosh, accepts as if it were the easiest mission he'll ever do. Sure, it is told from Duo's POV and Heero's just being his good old detached self. But wait, he isn't THAT detached anymore. He did go after her on Libra and then Brussels. And in the film version of EW, he even hesitates for a bit to fire at the basement because Relena was there. So what happened? Where is that guy now? And I'm not saying this because I have shipping concerns. I'm just looking for his character development--where has it gone?

Okay, maybe it's because he hasn't fully recovered his memories. He has just returned to join the living after all. I just hope that that's the case.

And as for Relena, I have to disagree on that one. I never really saw her all shiny-eyes at the sight of Heero. In fact, I always saw Heero the one who "fell in love" with her first. I thought it was just his guy-pride that stopped him from realising it and showing it to her, let alone, admitting it to himself.

Relena simply looked up to him because he's strong enough to fight alone. In a way, he was an inspiration to her. She simply wanted to be like him. It wasn't until episode 48 when she realises she doesn't just admire him anymore that she's not willing to let him go and get himself killed. That, and the fact that it would be her worst nightmare to see the two men of her life kill each other, of course.

I'm not complaining that she said she missed/wanted to see him. Man, she always says that. I'm complaining about Sumizawa writing her as all mopey about Heero killing her.

I mean, back in the day, in the Romafeller Hall or wherever the heck that is, when she was giving her famous in-your-face-Dermail speech, Queen Badass was clearly shown seeing Heero pointing a gun between her eyes. And while she gets surprised that he was there just for that very purpose and somewhat sad that he will be shooting her any moment now, she doesn't lose her composure and even says "Do it, Heero.". Granted, she was on live TV then, and so she couldn't possibly break down in front of billions. Then again, I doubt that that was the reason why she didn't flinch. I mean, at the end of the day the whole universe will see her get shot. Either way, it will cause commotion.

Also afterward, we see her reflecting on life and shiz in a dark room before Treize comes in to tell her to step down. And even then, we didn't (or at least, I didn't) see her thinking about Heero (and his another failed attempt to kill her) and crying about it.

Next stop: Libra. Heero sneaks in to break her out. She didn't have the "OMG-he's-here-to-save-me-I-am-so-moved" look. In fact, she was surprised that he came after her. And she was even more surprised when later, he covers her with his body when Libra takes a nasty hit and debris is falling everywhere.

Flash forward to Endless Waltz. Heero prepares to fire at the basement when Dekim goes, "Oy man, you wouldn't dare, Relena's here!". But Heero being a hero fires anyway because it's for the greater good. And what does Relena do when he DOES fire despite the fact that she knows that he knows she's there? She doesn't budge. Even though a normal person, a young female no less, has every right to feel bad over something like that. Man, I know I would have felt bad if it were me! Wow, he knows I'm here but he still fired? But that's just cuz I'm selfish, I guess. XD

By the time it was all over, Relena wasn't shown thinking about Heero, either. In fact, it was Heero who was shown "thinking" about her. Then he just goes walking off to the starry backdrop. I guess, one can argue with the film version, though. There, Relena looks up at the sky and then the next frame was a huge Where Is Heero Now scene. I guess you can say she was thinking about him then. But when you think about it, they were BOTH looking up. Which I always interpreted as, you know, miles apart but still under the same sky sap kinda thing.

So why would she cry now and get all angsty about it? Why NOW of all times? When back when she didn't want him to kill her but knew he would, she was fine with it. Yes, I do believe back then she didn't wish to die. Sure, she'd rather have him do it instead of anyone else. She wasn't afraid of dying and was willing to if the situation demanded it. But I doubt she wished for it.

But now that she genuinely does want it cuz she needs it, she starts crying? When back when she didn't want it, she didn't even feel bad.

That's what I'm confused about here.

Unless, of course, something happened between her and Heero prior to getting frozen, like, say if they got together or something, then yeah, I can understand why she would cry now.

English is not my first language and at times, I find it difficult to use to express what I really want. In all honesty, it took me ages to write this. And not just because it's lengthy. XD Anyway, the last thing I want to do is seem like I'm quoting canon on you, when I am perfectly aware that you know your canon. Please understand that the only reason why I cited these particular events is because I want you to know that my frustration over Relena's abrupt "weak" appearance is based on how I interpreted the canon. It's not simply because I'm some depressed Relena fangirl. I'm NOT saying that you said I was. Also, I'm not trying to change how you see her nor am I telling you that how you see her is wrong. Heck, I don't even know if I'm right!

You know, Hilde's not my favourite character but man, was I glad when I heard it was her who broke it off with Duo!

I agree with this. I'm still ...not sure if he really is doing it with that intention, but I also can't shake the feeling that it's an 'apology' or at least fan pandering on his part. I guess he feels he has to throw them a bone somewhere, or maybe Sunrise made him for the sake of not alienating one of their money sources XD

And agreed here as well. I think a large part of the Wufei hate is the factors you mentioned, as well as his character in general being really hard for some people to 'get'. I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of Wufei either, because his character is the one I've had the most trouble understanding (ie, why he does some of the things he's done), and that keeps people from liking or caring about him very much. Which is funny because the Wufei fans I do meet are very passionate about him xD

And Heero is indeed a HUGE jerk. Total sociopath too, though now that we've seen his upbringing I guess that explains why, haha. Though if anything I like Wufei for his jerkiness.

I totally understand this, and I think it is like you said, Heero is just.. detached and aloof. I have to wonder if this is a case of Duo's POV getting in the way? Maybe Duo picks up on Relena's emotions better because she's there, or maybe it's Heero just being.. himself. If you look at any of the scenes in series where he has shown his emotions, it's only when he's alone (with her or himself- like that scene in ep 48 I mentioned, or his navelgazing monologue in the FT drama CD, or even though it's not 100% canon, the scene at the end of Blind Target. And imo the time when we see the most emotion from him is when he accidentally kills that little girl and her dog- you can see the pain and fear in his expression, yet we see in the Ep Zero manga OM chapter that as soon as Doctor J approches him right after that, he goes into the poker face again, even though we know by his suicide attempts at the beginning of the series that he's still hurting.)

(Either way this kind of annoys me too because you just know the shippers in denial will point to this and say, 'BUT HEERO NEVER SAID HE LOVED HER!!!'. Because people don't get he's a stoic! He wouldn't confess his love to anybody outright. Sigh.)

I think that's definitely the question- why does she have to die? Why is she okay with it now? Why is it so painful? We know Heero is the only one who can due to that nanomachine virus or whatever- and my guess is that this is something along the lines of her being a puppet for the Noinheim, and that the only way (for ..whatever reason) to set everyone free of the nanomachines maybe is to kill her. But beyond that... it'll be interesting to see. And I wonder if something did happen between them, during that vaguely alluded to time that Heero went crazy and joined the enemy.

Thank you for the response Your tone and such are perfectly fine! I enjoy having these canon conversations and it always makes something occur to me about the novel that I never noticed before.

But like you said, we don't know what really happened and when we find out, perhaps that's only when the characters' present seemingly odd behaviours will be justified.

I've always wondered how a lot of these shippers-in-denial can say things like that in defense of their ship, when Heero never said he loved his "other" love interest, either.

Relena is a very complex character, hence my strong, dislike - I guess is the safest word for it, towards character descriptions that make her seem like she's black and white. "From early on in the series, Relena has been shown to be in love with Heero"--OMGosh really? You have got to be kidding me. I wanted to swallow nails when I read that! How can some fans actually say that with all certainty?

Cuz it's not like Relena said she loves Heero, either. Did she EVER say that? No sarcasm here. Did she? Considering the "mistakes" of the English translation, I could be wrong.

So if she did say it, then I guess I have no right to complain about those character descriptions or this chapter's mention of the word "love" (the one she loves ) more than twice.

However, if she never said that like I believe, then I think it is nothing but theory and so fans shouldn't post such claims in public domains like Wikipedia (despite the fact that it is JUST Wikipedia) or something similar. However, it doesn't really matter now because obviously, this chapter pretty much vindicated these fans. And it just pains me.

And as for this chapter itself, its mention of the L-word, is, imo, poor writing skills in Sumizawa's part. I always thought that if either of the two (Heero and Relena) will ever be confirmed in love with the other, it would be delivered via the dialogues. Coming straight from the character FIRST, not the narrator. But obviously, this is based on personal preferences again.

Now, it's been a while since I read Blind Target, but just recently I read a discussion about it. Apparently Relena had a mega "I love you, Heero" speech there (dis tru?) and his response was caress her cheeks, blah. And the, umm, enemy shippers obviously went "OMG she's pathetic, girl confessing instead of the guy!". I always wonder how they can say that when ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. Heero was the one who initiated the kiss that occured later on, but did anyone hate on him for that? Gosh, how unfair is it for Relena.

Anyway, my point is, people get to see Wu Fei's flaws, Relena's flaws, whoever else's flaws, but if it's Heero? Nah, it's fine. Forgive and forget. Okay, I do not hate Heero at all, heck no!
