Catgirls?

It's been less than a year since I've immersed myself in the anime scene, and though I've seen boatloads of series, I still don't understand exactly what the role of the catgirl is in Japanese culture. I understand that it's some kind of fetish, but is there any reason the obsession started, or any background on it? Plus, is it an anime-only kinda thing or what? Just curious...

Well some people think catgirls are cute, so people like to put catgirls in animes sometimes
I dunno if there is any background about it, but it might be related to hentai

I don't think having cat girls totally applys to anime....

Take a look at Catwoman.

Sexy lady being a cat. So who knows.

I think it has to have the reference since the start of human times (I'll blame the Egyptians) to look at cat's being sexy.

One of the main male characters in Tenchi Myou GXP is feline.

From what I have heard, the cat is a symbol of femininity in Japan, so making a cat-girl just kind of doubles the cute girlness of the character. Also the dog is a symbol of masculinity, so why isn't there dog-boys?

The oldest cat girl anime i can remember is probably Nuku Nuku. ^^

An even older character will be Lum but she's not exactly cat girl, she just like to wear tiger skin bikini.

I think cat woman might be a big influence too.

It's obviously some kind of fetish, perhaps because they look ultra cute and playful ?

Besides, who can resist this

People have added animal features to humans for ages, and I think anime is no exception. For example, egyptions (Bastet, a cat-woman goddess ), ancient greece (sphinx, a cat-woman having nothing better to do than play riddles), and so on. It's just to spice things up.

Beware, because if you go too much at giving animal feature to an human, you'll end up with a furry -.-
Sphinx are more furries than catgirls for example

I can't sit back idly and watch this thread any longer. I need to start posting pictures of catgirls before I explode! I suggest the rest of you do the same (we could have a competition ). Behold the magical powers of Tokyo Mew Mew!!!

Spoiler for Make sure no one is looking...:

A furry is mostly an animal with human traits ; when an human starts to look more like an animal (like has hairs on the skin, etc...)than an human, it becomes a furry.
Well known furries are most Walt Disney's characters which while having some traits of humans, are more animals than anything.
Furries are known to be hated in hentai, because they end up in nasty hentai art and have been banned by sites like 4chan or have their own section.
