Military anime

Okey now I have a fascination with the military, and I was wondering if there are any good military anime out there. Anything regarding the army, the navy or the airforce. Military sci-fi is okey for as long as there's no cute stuff and as much as possible, no mecha; I got many of that kind already.

Here's some examples that I own:

Area 88
Jin-Roh
Ghost in the Shell: SAC

You could try Crest of the Stars (and all the sequels). The anime follows our two heroes through their adventures with interstellar war in the background. First season focuses more on their personal troubles, second season focuses more on the war itself on a large scale, third season there the conflict has been narrowed down to one planet-wise. Action/SciFi/Adventure/romance.

My no1 anime

Starship Operators should fit the bill rather nicely as well.

If you manage to get past your dislike of mecha - Soukou no Strain as well.

I think that this depends on what exactly you're looking for. There isn't very much pure military anime out there, and the number of anime creators who are interest in making realistic military shows seems to be even more limited. Having said that, there are a few standout shows that are pretty decent at certain aspects:

Starship Operators - It's possibly the most realistic depiction of space combat in anime. Don't let the premise of "Reality show in space!" mislead you; it's actually a fairly decent representation of geopolitics and hardish-SF.

Zipang - It has some very well done realistic and historical scenes, and some not-so-good ones. However, it's still a very interesting take on World War II.

Legend of Galactic Heroes - This is reminiscent of the "- of the Stars" series, but with much more focus on the actual battles. It's not horribly realistic, but it has some quality military action. It's also one of the few shows that talk about military strategy.

By the way, there is also an "- of the Stars" OVA that wraps up one of the character's storylines. I agree with Skyfall that this is an excellent show, but do note that there isn't all that much military action outside of the second series.

My recommendation is Last Exile.

But if you haven't jumped on the Gundam bandwagon, I think it's worth a shot.

Full Metal Panic - Probally the most hilarious Military related anime. Think about a person who has been a soldier his whole life, who now has to blend into modern society as part of his mission. It's just hilarious, he brings guns to school and more.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I really appreciate them.

No I don't dislike mecha; heck I like mecha which is why I have Gundam and Macross to boot, it's just that majority of the military anime I own is mecha, so I'm searching for non-mecha like the Kerberos Saga (Jin-Roh if animated).

To deathkillz and MingeBag:

Thanks for the heads up guys, but I'm afraid FMP isn't my cup of tea.

I would go for

Gundam Seed
Gundam Seed Destiny
SE Stargazer

This will fall in the group nicely.

Heroic Age. So far we've had grunts vs aliens, mighty machines vs hives; mind raping..

Fleet formations (albiet kinda useless as the focus isn't on the strategy)
"hurr.. line is brokn hurr"
"huwah hurr? fall back and regroup at point b hurr"

(and they didn't tell why.. lol)

Is cute stuff refer to cute character or cute military? If you OK with cute character (only the character, not the military aspect) :

Stratos 4 » Airforce/dogfight
Stellvia » Outerspace/dogfight
I'm seconding SaiKano although is for focus to the romance factor for me...

And....
Spoiler for Just for your information:

I just said no mecha. But thanks anyway.

@furuno
When I meant by cute stuff, I meant both aspects you mentioned. Sorry if I didn't specify. I don't blame you for giving me those. Actually I'm looking for military that looks like GITS: SAC, the Kerberos Saga (Jin-Roh is the only animated one) and Area 88. Thanks though.

While it's not combat oriented, you absolutely cannot go past Rescue Wings if you want realism in a military setting.

It's about a pilot who bums out of the jet fighter program and is re-assigned to be a helicopter pilot for the JSDF Air Rescue team. An excellent drama, and some very interesting character development in a 100% realistic setting. It has excellent animation standards, great writing and good voice casting.

Pumpkin Scissors. Set in a fictional place with technology similar to that of the first half of the twentieth century (seemed to be most like WWI).
