When the nuclear-scale adrenaline rush that I get from watching Burst Angel
or Outlaw Star gives me a heart attack, I'll be too old to watch anime. (150-ish.) |

Ideally, what most people have said here is true: that there is no age limit in watching anime, and that the society's opinions shouldn't affect you.
However, when you are living in a place like Japan (10 years ago, at least), the so-called "social acceptability" can actually matter. Taken from this thread, which no doubt some of you have come across already, otakus (term used to describe hardcore fanatics, but is now used more often to describe anime/galge fanatics) actually risked losing their jobs if they were to be exposed as an otaku. This wouldn't be that big of a problem if society treated hardcore fans as the only form of anime-related otakus, but rather, society at that point treated anyone above the age of...20(?) who watches any other anime besides Sazae-san and Doraemon to be an otaku. It IS that scary, and the fact that there was a child-sexual abuse criminal who was identified as an otaku (Whether him being an anime-otaku being true or not, being unknown), made the impression/stereotype of otakus to fall further into the pits, as if hentai/galge didn't make that bad enough. In the eyes of the average human being (lets face it, the negative stigma attached to anime isn't exclusive to Americans), anime is either seen as: 1) Childish - just because it is animated, or the mentality that anime and cartoons are no different, even though as Vexx has mentioned, Looneytoons (or whatever their original names were) were originally made for adults in the first place. 2) Porn - Hentai, galge (A.K.A ergo-ge/erotic games, gal-games, or the outside-Japan definition - hentai game), and even ecchi. As if in denial, most people who aren't anime fans will hop on the bandwagon and start writing petitions for banning anime when they happen to come across the mentioned items, and choose to ignore other examples that fans present to them. Since the average person makes up for majority (And majority = win), they will usually have their way. (Albeit not to the extend of banning anime altogether, but something negative enough) |

I see myself watching anime for the rest of my life, because lets face it american television isn't always the best, especially if you have, i don't know... a brain, but as for watching anime into my 70's i hope not, but only because I hope I don't live that long.

Eclipze makes valid points... I *still* get the occasional terrified look from a parent when I mention my kids, their friends, and I play D&D. I can just imagine what the "herd mindset" of Japan is like when seeking out and "burning witches" --- they've all been turned into newts (though it got better).
Best bet is to just be intellectually prepared to discuss ... and try not to be a flaming stereotypical dorkus thus proving their point.

If you feel that anime or any other type of animation is a trend for you that makes you excited with initial reactions, though you know in yourself that it passes by feeling no further attachments that keep you entertained anymore fed up of watching the same premises getting recycled with new looks, then you will grow up from it.
On the other hand, if you feel in your gut that anime is not a mere trend or fashion but in actuality it sticks, adapts, grows in your personal lifestyle, then it does not matter if keeps on delivering shows using the same recycled contents then being displayed on different formats and images, you would not get tired or fed up with it. On the contrary, you would prove to be an ageless fan of anime. |

I think the obvious answer is "When you start asking if you're too old to watch anime". Ba-dum-dum.
Obviously Vexx and Furudanuki don't feel like they're too old (and either one is as old as my father ... so that tells you something). I, for one, actually find good shows on American TV (apparently, in the immortal words of Beavis and Butthead, I get the one channel that doesn't suck) - so I doubt I'd ever get burned out on anime because it doesn't make up a huge portion of what I watch and/or do. If it's the only thing you're doing then I'd expect you'd burn out at some point - that's what happens to most people when they obsess over something.

I think I'll be too old when I start thinking of anime as cartoons and not as a great genre for storytelling. That might take a while, as as I'm pretty childish as it is...

Here's one thing. I agree that, I will still be watching anime when I get old become a grandparents and so on. Just, At that life time, sometimes we will be too busy to watch anime... mostly we might just snore and fall asleep while watching television lol[Not every grown person is like that, some it takes them around 70+ years to start doing that, some at an early 50's]..... But when I have the time to do anything, I'll do what I "Like" to do, and thats Anime/Games, Theres other things I liked to do, Go out too, I just like to have fun, staying at home sometimes is boring, specially If you got no more anime/games to watch/play. Enjoy the life while it lasts!

I would say there is no such thing as too old as long as you still enjoy it. You see 70+ year olds going to college. If they aren't to old to go to college because they enjoy it why should they be to old to watch anime if they enjoy it. I think that the scenes depicting loss of loved ones affects older watchers more than younger watchers because they have experienced them too. There is a lot of difference between imagining how something would feel and in knowing how it feels.

i personally think you can watch more things (not just anime) if you are older. there are more viewing limits to children.
from my age right now and onwards, i thik i can practically watch anything. what i watch will depend on my mood, not on some restrictions others imposed on me. |

Well, I don't like repeating what everyone else has said, but whatever. There shouldn't be an age limit put on anime. I am still young, so I guess I can't have an opinion of how an older person should conduct themself, but from my viewpoint anime isn't so restricted that I personally would think strangely of someone who enjoys watching it at an old age... As opposed to my thinking that of someone who watches Barney at an old age.

I dont plan on stopping my anime watching anytime yet but i think when i grow up and its really getting to me that i cant squeeze out no more time to watch even episode. I think ill naturally quit it. Who knows, when i grow old, i start taking it up again when im all free and have nothing to do

I have to agree that I feel that unless anime as a medium changes considerably, I don't think I will abandon it regardless of age. I'm not sure about other people's reasons, but my reasons are very personal. I am not a hardcore fan like some people here. I only watch one series at a time, and have rarely followed a series that's currently ongoing (except for Honey & Clover, and Naruto). I am simply interested in anime as a different way of telling a story in a different culture, etc, and stuff like that. I don't consider myself to be that immersed in the otaku culture or whatnot. I suppose this makes it easier for me to say that I won't lose interest in it. I can see why some people who base a significant portion of their lives in this anime fandom might lose interest eventually. For me, I won't lose interest in anime, just like I don't lose interest in good films, or music, and etc.
