Secca: Nice... but (just speaking for me personally) I prefer softer, less obvious, edges ^_^ ... also you probably want to put "AnimeSuki Forums", rather than "AnimeSuki.com"

Yes, absolutely. Just don't confuse NoSanninWa over which version you want to actually submit once you've made your edits, etc.

Yay thanks for comments. It wasn't much. I made that from an episode i have. You can tell that I didn't use some of the space because that's exactly the resolution of the video. ^^;;

I see, the text, that would be my bad. ^^ I'll make another version with "Forums" in it.

Hmm softer less obvious edges? I know what you mean. Sounds tricky tho, I have yet to figure how to do that one out, yet. >_<;;

If you have photoshop, use the eraser tool, turn it to soft edges and lower the opacity. Then gradually erase the edges until it becomes a smooth transition.

To turn a brush to soft edges,

go to brushes palette, click on brush tip shape and drag the hardness slider down to 0%.

v0.0.4 Higurashi

- Previous version v0.0.1

- Previous version v0.0.2

- Previous version v0.0.3

Probably more psychotic in theme than Halloween. ...but there is still a lot of background room to work with. Maybe add in some headlights from Colonel Sanders' Cadillac,.. some motion blur... ...NO!... Rena! Look out!

...Or well, maybe just some bats.

*WHACK*

NO!!!

Piñata? ... Hey, candy!

v0.0.8 something something ...degauss ...there we go

- Removed template layer

Gimp

- Add layer mask (Layer/Mask/add layer mask)
- Select Ok for within pop-up window: White (Full Opacity)
- Using Blend/Gradient tool, and with Foreground color = black ...Background color = White ...and using the the FG to BG (RGB) Gradient and Linear shape, the gradient tool should then be able to give some basic edge smoothing.

These are my three submissions for the contest.

This is the first one.

This is the second one: This one is my favorite.

This is the third one: I just had to use this picture of Kon in a sailor fuku.

In Photoshop you can just work a selection with the pen tool.

Use pen tool to make a line around your image.
Once you complete the circle right click and make selection.
For the feather value you can change to whatever value you want. Larger means there's a larger area for the gradient.
Now maybe you need to invert selection I dunno. You want the outside selected.
Then just hit delete.

Or if you really want extra work you can use quickmask mode. Which might work similarly to what Green suggested in Gimp, I'm not sure. At any rate, if you want I have a video tut for that. ;P

I have a question:

Eventhough I dont plan to participate, I was wondering If I could post some Halloween-themed wallpapers I have so that people interested may used them as source materials.

Would it be okay if I post them here?

That would be more than alright. Please. Anything that inspires others to create banners can only be a good thing!

I think you could do better. You're basically only using a single image pasted over our gradiant with a few words. If you cut out the character you'll find the result is much more striking. As a final critique, the edge of the image is completely straight without even any token bluring. Please try to cobine the image with the background, rather than interrupting it. See what Green² did in the image below for how background colors can blur into the gradiant.

Also, it isn't Halloween themed. I'd have to disqualify it for that reason...

Very nice banner. I see you're using the extra banner size well and learning to work with our new gradiant color. Darn cute. I like this one also!

The picture is quite acceptable since it is anime-style illustration. I do have a critique though. It seems that the image has been squished. You shrunk her vertically more than horizontally. The result looks freaky and bad. When you resize an image you need to "lock aspect ratio" or else you'll have weirdly distorted images like this one. I'm sure it will look a lot better once you fix that.

Absolutely wonderful. Cute and Haloweenie. Also, although the broom comes very close on the left side, it doesn't go too far. Take a look at how it will look when I extend the gradiant to the right and left:
Spoiler for large image:
As you see, there is no edge to the image. Sweet deal.

Thanks guys, those guides are quite helpful, I didn't know Photoshop can do that. It's magic! ^^

Awww, didn't make it. T-T

Actually I was kinda unsure myself wether I should submited this banner or not. The character was basically one of the evil girls in Coyote, ruthless killers with angelic face. I'm not sure if they are close enough to Hallloween or not. Well I tried. ^^

There was some good pointers here that I can work on the next one. Thanks, guys. ^^

If, or when, we replace the current (main site) banner, I would rather we replaced it with something featuring Kairin, by which I mean I will be more likely to resist the use of a banner that doesn't feature her, and more likely to support one that does!
Yes, I'd like to second this. I know this is very late as the contest has already started.

While I was the one to suggest having the winning forum banner grace the site as well (with
appropiate text of course, leaving out "forums"), some concerns popped up.

One of them was bandwidth: due to this we probably won't have alternating banners on
the site. The other may be copyright. While we might get away with using real anime art
on the forum banners under the pretext of "fair use", on the site we may not.

Of course, I may be just paranoid, but... if a banner contains just Kairin then copyright won't
be of any concern. So consider this if you want your banner to grace the site as well.

No it wouldn't. Quote from the rules of the Mascot contest by Nightwish:

But... let's not get into those details
