That's a lot of pressure, though... I don't think I'd want people telling me I'm a genius until I'd actually, you know, accomplished something intellectually?

Base intelligence is but one component of actually learning and discovering new information for humanity... drive, personality, and circumstance are all pretty important as well.

Countering the old counterculture. Rebellion against the now 60+ year old hippies and the ideologies that came from the part of society perhaps?

Kneejerk reaction to the followup to "Free Love"..I guess you could call it that "Whatever, Sex". Not quite like the hippie days, but more like that "yeah we did it cause everyone does it with anyone" ideology that seems to show up on television more and more since the late 90s (the everyone is everyone's sex partner at some point,type shows). How real any of that is is debatable, but conservatives react to that sort of thing as "indecent" or "against the biblical law" depends on type of converative. The more that is happening the greater the reaction.

I only know about the Padania movement from Gunslinger Girl where in the manga, they're trying to separate from Italy due to how they feel the South is making the North pay taxes for the South's politicians coppers. So seeing the founder of the NL being not so different with the politicians is rather ironic.
