Wow. What a disappointingly bad episode. I'm especially surprised to see how the creators decided to reach for a really poor excuse of a moral equivalence to top it all off. I would hope that the future episodes are way better.

Maybe Marie just didn't care about the other kids, just Allelujah. |

That's precisely what I'm referring to, and neither of your possibilities (which are fairly nice observations, by the way) work for me. The latter case just make Marie look like a egotistical monster, and the former belittles the act too much - murder is an act of great enormity, and you simply can't shove the deaths of however many other Maries under the carpet like that.

Thinking about it a little more deeply, it'd be for the best if Marie does turn out to be a monster (and that the creators have the guts to show that) since it'd at least make her interesting. Right now, I find her to be about as exciting as a cardboard cutout.

She was raised in the same place as Allelujah, to be the same thing. It wouldn't be surprising if she was the same kind of psycho.
Besides, for the whole time she was "Marie", Al was the only one in the whole world she could communicate with. At all. It might make sense for her to think he's the only person in the world who matters. Which would make Soma the compassionate one. Funny. |

I think that they made it clear that Marie had no contact with anyone other than Allelujah, so her experience in the super soldier facility must have been completely different from his. Since he must have treated her very well, Marie shouldn't have any sort of unusual psychosis (aside from that other identity, of course). And for that matter, Soma herself doesn't seem to have resented her status as a super soldier, so I don't think that such a conclusion comes naturally.
On your other note, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Soma is more compassionate; of the cast, she ranks fairly high in terms of empathy (if only because there are so many callous characters).
