Episode 2
So we get some Rei and Akari flashbacks here. Rei was once made to drink alcohol and was left alone afterwards. Akari found him and since she's a genuinely nice person, she helps out the kid, takes him into her house to get some rest, and keeps him there until he more or less recovers. Rei saw this new town as dull but after meeting those lively sisters he's now seeing some color in this land. And I think he's fallen for Akari because who wouldn't? |

Akari is an angel. I don't know many people who would bring back some stranger drunk kid back to their home. I'm glad Rei seems to realize how lucky he is to have met the sisters, as he himself said they brought color back to his life.
It's also admirable that Akari is taking care of her sisters on her own, even taking on two jobs. She probably took a liking to Rei because he experienced the same tragedy as them, losing their parents at an early age. And damn, given her gorgeous looks, she must be crazy popular at that hostess club. She really knows how to handle the customers, too.

Oh latest episode goes back to a more familiar writing of Umino. If the first episode is too heavy and serious with a smattering of SoL elements, this episode with lots of quirky side characters is much more in style of Honey and Clover. I still remember the Lohmeyer-senpai, and just like that episode, I was literally laughing out loud at the antics of Rei's Rival and his senpais at his club.
My biggest gripe? Tomokazu voicing Smith. Considering Tomokazu voiced one of the major characters in Honey and Clover, there's just this weird dissonance here where I'm seeing a gaijin but hearing Mayama. XD As for the story itself, I'm totally lost on the Shogi. Just like with Go, I know the basic rules, but not being familiar with the underlying strategy has me totally lost on the match itself. Hopefully they go into the actual strategy itself, even if it doesn't become the main focus, I'd say it would be a nice touch. Now Akari is a total sweetie... just a shame she didn't meet Rei earlier. And with that there's the irony that Kyouko/Ayumu having known Rei since they were kids, it's actually Akari and her family who acts more like the childhood friends. XD Finally, I love the OP and the ED; I think it's the best the cour has to offer. Especially the OP; the visuals has so much symbolism and the lyrics' imagery combine to make such an awesome sequence. At first I thought it was merely just catchy, but upon seeing the translation, everything clicked together.

Yep, Akari is truly an angel, a gorgeous angel. Having to rise two little sisters made her grow up faster and it's kinda make sense for her to feel the same mother instinct toward the MC.
The humor on the other hand keep not working for me as much as the MC, so I'm not sure yet if I'm committed.

Episode 2:
Hmm, it appears that Rei Kiriyama's parents have died in a car accident. On the other hand, seems that Rei-kun got a rough life such as being left alone drunk (Stupid bastards!) and other nasty stuff that befall on him. Still, at least Akari and the rest of the Kawamoto sisters are the ones supporting him. Glad that there's compassion on this series! |

Episode 3:
Hmm, I still like how the way they present the shogi games in this show especially with Harunobu (Bodoro) playing against Rei. I also really like the style of the backgrounds they're using especially when Rei takes the train. Very expressive. The shogi match felt more like mind games and I think Shaft did a decent job at capturing the key moments. The facial expressions are priceless and fairly well done between the two rivals. Someji is also really funny to see, best grandpa. The feels this episode as well..

Episode 3
Rei and Harunobu played each other when they were kids. Harunobu looked like he was about to die because of the heat but still carried on with the game despite Rei trying to end things as quickly as he could. And this match also has the same result. Rei chose to forget about his parents because it would only make him cry and crying will do him no good so he's kept those feelings locked away. But seeing Hina cry like that is probably making him reconsider that decision. Hina tried not to let these feelings surface all this time and went far away to let it out. And Rei might be thinking of doing something similar. Pretty good stuff here. |

I've always found Rei and Hina to be great foils of each other. One prefers to buryi his emotions inside under the guise of an unaffected person, the other prefers to hide it under perpetual cheeriness. One just keeps burying and burying, the other deciding to let it out when they're alone.
And in the end, it would seem they can only be truly honest with each other.

This episode made me reflect a lot on my way of mourning. My thoughts regarding the family's daily ritual were exactly the same as Rei's, and just like him, I try not to think about the people close to me who have left this world. It's the easiest way to ease, or rather, forget the pain, but is it the right one? The show provided no answer, and I'm not sure there is one.
