Taishou Otome Otogibanashi

The manga series Taishou Otome Otogibanashi got a TV anime adaptation announcement today.

Plot Summary:

Quote:
Tamahiko Shima is the youngest son of the powerful and wealthy Shima family. Blessed with great fortune since his childhood, he grew up wanting nothing but affection from his oftentimes distant family.

After losing his mother and crippling his dominant arm in an accident, Tamahiko fell into deep despair and is cast aside by his own father for his handicap. Condemned to live isolated in the countryside where he would not bring shame to his family's name, he resigned himself to dying alone—until one day, a young girl named Yuzuki Tachibana appeared on his doorstep, proclaiming that Tamahiko's father sent her to be his bride.

As she takes care of Tamahiko, Yuzuki brings a feeling of springtime into Tamahiko's dreary life, allowing him to gradually heal from the deep emotional scars of his youth. Their lives slowly intertwine as both Tamahiko and Yuzuki taste the fruits of their first love.

Quite the satisfying Taishou bride meme. Obedient and accepting, but somehow strong. The guy is a jerk but he has reason. I look forward to him becoming less depressive and her becoming more rounded. My old-fashioned morality side was pleased by the separate futons. Not great, for me, but watchable so far.

Gotta use those assets somewhere (They should just disband the team though)

This certainly opened up with another father of the year award winner. If that's what he said to his son I can only imagine what he said about his wife...Not that the rest of the family was any better. At least presuming they all said those things and he wasn't just thinking the worst.

Yuzuki is a blast. Hard not to immediately fall for someone like that. I salute this guy's attempts to typecast without actually trying to learn about her. Of course I do get why the guy is so depressed. At least he's just depressed and not an angry personality. And it isn't as if he's completely wrong about why she showed up there.

Glad they didn't drag out having him vent his frustrations. And I appreciate that she did have reasons for trying her best to start too. Even if he was basically on autopilot when they met, his autopilot was still to be considerate. He wasn't completely lost at that point. And no doubt that did mean a lot. I mean she was basically bought due to a debt, had to leave her friends, met the guy's scary father, and was sent walking out in the cold to meet someone that could have been...basically anything from good to horrible. So just being a decent person to start meant something.

Best part may have been her at least realizing the misunderstanding about 'sleeping together' to some degree when he tossed the extra pillow . That was fun. All the more so since she nearly killed him with the whole "I'll save myself for you" bit . That was deadly.

I find this sort of series to be unbelievably sexist, and the fact that it's written by a woman is irrelevant to that. There are more ways to objectify girls than overt sexualization. People get in a tizzy about fanservice but stuff like this (which is more insidious in many ways) gets a free pass because it's "healing".

Honestly the whole thing made me want to watch Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou just to wash away the aura this left.

I'm pretty sure people are giving it a free pass more because it takes place in the past.

Maybe. Just as underserved.

The point is, this sort of show always gets a free pass despite its preposterous objectification of young girls, whether it's set in the past or not.

Preposterous? Umm, well, I guess treatment of females weren't "good" in the past.
That said, if you won't separate fiction from reality, then at least fault yourself, not others.
Reminds me of the time some feminists sent death threats to Asanagi for the doujin he made. That one, the train one. Very good, definitely would suggest reading it, BTW.

Watching this feels weird one week after actually getting married myself, and then realizing that she's the polar opposite of my wife.

That said I don't mind the fact that she's playing the role of the subservient, old-school era wife with a touch of genki. I suppose one could call it sexist, but that's seeing things in the modern lens. If this was set in the modern era then you could call that true, but this is set nearly one hundred years ago, and thus is still subject to many of the societal and gender role norms of that era. I mean even the Philippines the statutory rape age was only 12 until recently!

I do have to admit that the bedroom scene made me a bit uncomfortable, but at least he isn't a lech.

In any case I have a very big thing for shows about a lonesome, emotionally isolated individual meeting their polar opposite who finally brings color and warmth to their life. These things kinda hit differently now when I got hitched.

I actually teared up a bit during the scene where they were drinking milk and she was singing. And if anyone was wondering why it may sound familiar, it's because it has the same melody as Hoshi no Sekai from Planetarian, the original melody written by Charles Crozat Converse.

Well, Tamahiko was at least self-aware of the seedy aspects of the arrangement and felt bad for her, and even Yuzu was kind of worried about it, but in this instance she was able to realize he was a nice guy who deserved better and their respective kindnesses helped them bond with each other .

It's known as "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" among American Protestants. I've heard it a couple of times in anime. Apparently it's rather popular in Japan and played at weddings. From Wikipedia,
Quote:
In Japan, the hymn's title was originally translated as "Itsukushimi Fukaki" (いつくしみ深き, lit. "Merciful"),[9] by which it is best known. In 1910, Daisui Sugitani rewrote the lyrics in Japanese and changed the title to "Hoshi no Yo" (星の界, lit. "World of Stars"). Another version was written by Ryūkō Kawaji with the title "Hoshi no Sekai" (星の世界, lit. "World of Stars"). It is also known by the title "Tsumitoga o Ninou" (つみとがをにのう, lit. "To Bear Sin"). The hymn is popular at wedding ceremonies in Japan.[10] Both hymn instrumentals of "Hoshi no Sekai" and "Itsukushimi Fukaki" are used as background music for Key's 2004 visual novel Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet, arranged by Magome Togoshi.

It's ironic that despite Narou being usually designed for escaping reality, that this anime made me feel more envious of the protagonist's situation than those ever could.

It could be worse, we've definitely seen worse (like Ex-Arms and Ex-Arms and Ex-Arms). I'm personally fine with it too.
But without an argument and truly unfortunate, it would be better if it wasn't. And would have retained more viewers. Sure, if the CG was used for... incredibly action scenes, but for something as simple as enjoying the relationship between a male and female character, there just is no benefit for the viewer.

One interesting thing to note is that while the manga uses 処女 for Otome, the anime decides to use Katakana instead.

In a similar-ish case, Otome ha Boku ni Koishiteru, the PC (R18) game uses 処女, but the consumer version uses 乙女
Of course, the latter may simply be because of whether there is sex or not, while for this anime, it's probably to avoid a certain group of people complaining.
