Count me one of those disappointed that the production just glossed on all the work the Hero had been doing in the Demon World in just ten seconds. It's a shame, as it FINALLY gives the readers/watchers a good look at at the various factions running amok in the Demon World in the Demon Lord's absence. Ditto on the condition at Gate City.

Also, the battle with Fire Dragon lord. Just... why? Even the 4koma didn't skip! When the comedy version doesn't skip an event, but the animated version skips it...

Damnit.

Seems like most of the "demons" are just generic mythological creatures or giant animals with glowing red eyes. Closest thing we have is that black armor, and I'm afraid attitudes towards demons are shifting just like vampires because...

Spoiler for IT'S HAPPENING:

Face it guys, the only way all those details would get into the anime is by giving the anime two to three cours. The manga format is simply blessed with the capabilities of integrating more of the story compared to the anime series format. The best-case scenario of seeing Hero's adventures is through a short OVA series, but since we're dealing with a studio with lesser-than-expected budget, that would be a very difficult feat to achieve.

The series' overall mood and feel reminds me of Dantalian no Shoka sans the blood and battle, with this episode's negotiation feeling like it's straight from Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon. As a fan of Horizon's focus on the more realistic things in war than just bashing heads in, I'm very much pleased by how that scene looked. It's always refreshing to see a battle fought between minds rather than between swords.

I think I understand well how much Hero's trying to be useful to Maou, since she has done much of the work, and Maou has been keeping him as a bodyguard — and he has very little to guard her from. But he should consider getting back to showing his love to her in a more direct way, as a Merchant is already eyeing her useless meat (and vast amounts of knowledge).

Okay, after watching eps 4, I’m afraid that my worst nightmare comes true that this series will be another Zetman: an anime who force itself to cover too much material in just 12 episodes. The result: a disappointing adaptation in almost every level.

My impression of the episode itself? The anime just blitz-through-it by skipping many important points (which others already mentioned) and degrading Hero by refusing to show his fighting prowess and decent negotiation skill with the Archduke Fire Dragon (a slideshow that ends in split-seconds! really? ). In fact, I always felt that the anime continuously refuse to show Hero’s shining moments so far, thus making him looks like a wimpy and stupid character more than he really is. Other things they skipped that pains me are some tidbits from Female Knight training those youngsters. The anime didn’t show us the reason why Female Knight act so tough on those Youngsters enough. That makes her looks more like a rude and violent woman than a smart, strict but gentle knight. I have other things to complain about, but I think I’ll stop here since I already addressed what disturbed me the most and to prevent this post from becoming a huge text-wall.

In short: I am hugely disappointed that this anime didn’t get more budget and more episodes to flesh-out the characters and the issues they face.

Here’s hoping that they do a better job in the upcoming episodes, but I’m already prepared for the worst. Anyway, the score is bland as hell but the VAs did a very good job.

GateWay City has not been skipped. It hasn't happend in the timeline yet
Spoiler for how it shows up in the novel but no details:

As for the fight with FDL while the manga does make it look cool it's not too importent in the story line and the ep hits all the high points of it. They fought. Hero won. Got another wife.

I don't like the translation, becuase the meaning is not authentic.

oni is a monster from Japanese haunting folklore. Today's anthropological interpretation is different.
bizarre strength is implying her power. Her skill can be ranked as the daughter of emperor(as in the department of strength).
yasha is a monster in Indian haunting folklore. The male yasha looks very ugly, and female yasha looks very pretty. The stone squeezed is implying the certain of the cutting board.

Well, if we ever see doujins of this series, we'll know who made them (head maid), since they'll contain what she wants them both to engage in-v-, and I don't mean an economics class-v-.

I'm starting to feel that using the staff from SnW is a bad choice since they are trying too hard to make it another SnW instead of let it shine by itself. The balance between Maou and Yuusha is being shafted in favour of the economics side from Maou. MaoYuu is more than just the economics, and seems like the staff haven't grasp it yet.

Well, she kinda looks like a succubus. But as Head Maid would point out, without sexiness or smuttiness in her personality, it's just useless meat.

I don't really see much economics in this show. What we have so far is Maou's coming up with various innovations to solve the human kingdoms' problems. I wouldn't call growing more food to address a food shortage as economics. C'mon, such an obvious solution can be realized by an elementary school student.

Economics would be something like this: person X is good at growing potato and person Y is good at rearing chickens. So person X trade with person Y, and both of them can enjoy potato and chicken. That is the basic economic principle of comparative advantage, which leads to trade. Instead of each person trying to do everything, he only need to do what he is good at and trade for what he needs.

In the anime setting, it would be Maou convincing the Southern Kingdoms to trade something they are good at making (say, farming tools) for wheat other kingdoms can grow cheaply.

I'm really really sorry, and I never expected this too happen, but this is *drop* for me. Because I like the original too much, and unfortunately, this anime doesn't work for me. It reduces the wonderful story and characters to hurried sketches and lifeless shadows. 12 episodes is just too little to properly do it.

o The story has removed 90% of the humorous small banter between the characters which has an important task: It makes me like them and care for them.

o Stripping important context completely messes up the characters. Take the scene where Female Knight cuts the sword to pieces: In the original, she only does this to teach the youngsters a lesson who openly rebelled against having a mere girl train them. In the anime, she looks like an idle braggart, because the context was completely omitted.

o Demon Queen is off. Where are her self-doubts and worries? Hero is off. A particularly wimpy version. Female Knight is completely off. Where is her positive disposition and humor? Big sister maid is off. She wants to run and fight? Are you kidding me?? Having prior knowledge of the material hurts, because what I know (and hold dear) is incompatible with the anime version. Not knowing the show might be much better.

o Completely omitting the Hero's efforts as Dark Knight? Seriously? By stripping this, they fail to make the viewers understand the nature of the demon world.

Sorry. This one is a failing grade for me, because I don't want this anime to pollute my own impression of the MaoYuuverse any more. I hope that in 3-4 years someone competent with a proper budget and at least 2 seasons makes another attempt.

With a heavy heart: *Drop*

Zetman sucked because it was %70 bad anime-original ideas. They never intended to be faithful to the source material like Maoyu is doing.

Can we have an anime-only discussion thread? The only discussion for EP4 so far has been how it compared to the Manga (which, ironically, is not the source).

I agree. It's like everyone wants this to be the adaptation of the "Kotowaru!" manga instead of the original light novels. I guess this is the advantage of those who are not exposed to "Kotowaru!", and it is much better to make good use of this advantage for maximum enjoyment of the anime.

It happens on every episode, for the record.
Sheesh, it's giving me the same nausea I've experienced when people who expected the Little Busters! anime series to be "as great as the original visual novel" and ruining the enjoyment of the anime-only viewers with their bickering about "why isn't this handled by KyoAni?" and "what happened to <insert spoilerish scene here>?".
