Just watched episode 12 and...
Spoiler:
Still an enjoyable series, even though they got the whole quindar tone thing wrong. Quindar tones are used to signal the ground transmitters around the world to turn on and off to send transmissions to spacecraft from the Earth's surface. You don't need them on spacecraft, because the transmitter is hard-wired into the capsule's communications systems. But it's still nice to think that they thought of trying to get it in somehow. Not so much hating on it as I'm being picky. I still liked the series. |

I'm really enjoying the subbed versions. The show was comprehensible enough without them for me to enjoy it, and now that I'm getting them it's like I get to discover each episode all over again.
The people who wrote the show had to have seen and/or read The Right Stuff. Yukari's frustration with all the launch delays looked a lot like what the Mercury astronauts went through. Actually, Yukari might have fit right in with the Mercury Seven. |

I know this show is just a silly trifle, but really the landing was just too implausible.
Still the girls are cute, and for that matter, so's Yukari's mother. I think the Director was right in thinking he should send her up next. Maybe they could lash the father onto the outside of the capsule. There's plenty of fanservice to go around in this show, especially the bikini episode (4), but at least the girls aren't drawn in the loli style of Sky Girls. Yukari's character model reminds me more of Tsukamoto Yakumo than any of the Sky Girls. Sure those bikini bottoms are a bit scanty, especially when seen from the rear, but in comparison to the bikinis worn in Sky Girls, these scenes don't seem to me quite so pedophilic.

Silly and implausible yes, but also very characteristic of children's stories. Yukari has gone "out of the frying pan, into the fire" - she's survived the dangers of re-entry, only to face the "dangers" of being embarrassed in front of her classmates and being scolded by the mean old principal. In some ways, those are bigger dangers to a kid than burning up in the atmosphere would be.

And now episode 9 is fansubbed! These guys in Rakuda must be drinking espresso out of 55 gallon drums, to keep up this pace! It's literally been one episode per day for the last four episodes!
And episode 10 the next day! I fully expect teenaged girls to be on the Space Shuttle by tomorrow! Last edited by Goofus Maximus; 2007-06-07 at 17:07. |

I really enjoy the space animations. It often appears that they skimped on some of the scenes with the humans to invest in really good animations of the spacecraft. Considering how we've all seen real-life views from orbit by now, they've done a great job of making the animations fit with those perceptions. The docking with Atlantis was especially good.
It looks like Matsuri has been relegated to the all-purpose fanservice role (nude swimming, pantsu, etc.). Frankly I thought it would have made more sense to leave Akane on the ground and send Yasuri with Yukari since they both had EVA experience, but then we'd have had no rationale for including Akane in the cast at all other than a few adoring "Yukari-sempais" from time to time. I'm especially impressed with the American astronauts command of Japanese. Who knew it was part of their training! Spoiler for through ep 11:
I'm just such a sucker for these shows with determined young women as the principals. Guess it comes from raising a daughter.

Great ending! Such a nice series, a very nice balance between a little science and a lot of fun
How many people read up on all of the science bits? Many thanks Rakuda for the fast and excellent work! Spoiler for for silly comment, with reference to epi 12:
