Kind of actually. The playstyle for the two games are vastly different but being a Tekken fan, I can honestly say that I quite like Soul Calibur too. Speaking of which, I liked how they use jugglers for Tekken fans. That is so, so true

They're similar, but still very different. In short, weapon reach makes a massive difference.

^^ There are plenty of fighting games not in the grid: Bushido Blade, Samurai Shodown, Killer Instinct (where the C-C-C-C-Combo Breaker meme comes from), Mortal Kombat, Power Stone, Bloody Roar, Battle Arena Toshinden, etc.

Bushido Blade, Power Stone, Bloody Roar, and Battle Arena Toshinden are probably in the same group as the Virtua Fighter fans.
