This trailer only gets me more hyped. Geez.

I'm curious about something, how's the Japanese reaction to this? Are they expecting another (shudder) Godzilla? Or is it positive? Or just "meh".

I doubt the latter would happen.

It's too AWESOME(With full caps and rainbow) to not get hyped.

Comments on niconico seems to be all positive and even enthusiastic. They are surprised that the actual Japanese word "Kaiju" is used to designate the monsters, they comment the various aspects of the robots are reminiscent of Mazinger, Evangelion and Gunbuster.

They also have already learned the various names of the mecha, "Coyote Tango", "Striker Eureka" and so on.

Why are they called Kaiju anyway? If the first attack occurred in America, wouldn't the Americans give the beasts their official name? Hopefully the film itself will explain why the beasts are given a Japanese name...

(Obviously, there is nothing wrong with the fact that the name is Japanese. I'm just curious how the universe/characters decided to call the monsters Kaiju rather than something more western like Behemoth? Colussus? Hell even Cthulu.)

Godzilla has made Japanese monsters one of a few things it is totally publicly acceptable to be publicly weeaboo about. Americans have an incredible adoration of Japanese giant monster movies, allowing "Kaiju" to be a reasonably mainstream understandable term.

This should be a movie the whole world can enjoy. Who doesn't like watching giant robots smash shit?

Maybe in communities like Animesuki, but an average American wouldn't 't refer to giant monsters as Kaiju (especially considering American/Western films did giant monsters first).

Even then Americans would just call them Godzillas . I remember when Cloverfield came out, whilst some critics (and more than some viewers) identified the beast as a Kaiju films, the vast majority of critics and viewers simply said giant monster.

Maybe the first one who name them is a Japanese-American? And later on s/he makes “Kaiju” part of the monsters’ scientific names?

Also, I think Kaiju is easy to pronounce and quite catchy .

Even the American Godzilla used the Japanese name as a lead in:

YouTube
Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

So it will probably be explained why they're using Kaiju.

I'm glad to see it's getting a positive reaction among Japanese fans though, hopefully the movie lives up to the hype.

That's fine. I just want an excuse beyond simple fan service.

I think you just proved why Americans/humans either wouldn't know the word or would viciously reject remembering the word .

Indeed. But I'm not sure it would really matter. If they don't know the word, they'll just assume it's made up....and quickly forget about it in the spectacle. On the other hand, the trailers aren't being shy about showing off some detailed information, so I believe it will be explained even if it's just casually mentioned.

Besides, the one thing that people always remember about Godzilla before anything else is his roar. I'm hoping the monsters here have some personality and distinction too.

Why are you bothered that the monsters were given a Japanese name but not that the robots were given a German name?

At least Japan is still involved in this "Pacific" threat.
