Log Horizon (ログ・ホライズン) is a novel by author Mamare Touno.



The story revolves around 30,000 Japanese players who find themselves in a world mirroring the MMORPG (Masively Multipler Online Role Playing Game) "Elder Tale" they were playing, stuck in the bodies of their own character.
Shiroe is an Enchanter, a mage who specialize in supportive roles.
He and his friends seek to survive in a familiar, yet unfamiliar world of Seldecia.

The novel is published on the web first, and on book format afterwards.
There are six novels out, with the seventh still in web serialization.
Although the novel is considered light novel by many, technically due to the page count and its format, it's considered a "novel".

Anime adaptation started airing on 10/05. The thread can be found here.
Web manga adaptation is currently serialized in Famitsu Comic Clear, with one volume out in publication.
Also a spin-off manga Log Horizon - Nishikaze no Ryodan (ログ・ホライズン　〜西風の旅団〜) is currently serialized in digital manga magazine Age Premium, featuring stories of Soujirou Seta and his <s>harem</s> guild <Seifuu no Ryodan> (The West Wind Brigade).

Btw, there're actually three spin-offs in addition to the main manga adaptation:

• "Log Horizon Gaiden - Honey Moon Logs" (ログ・ホライズン 外伝 Honey Moon Logs)
  
  Featuring the Crescent Moon Alliance, led by the important supporting characters Mariel and Henrietta. The story appears to deviate from novel canon though.

• "Log Horizon Gaiden - Honcho Nyanta: Recipe of Happiness" (LOG HORIZON 外伝 -にゃん太班長・幸せのレシピ-).
  
  The PoV character here is the Werecat Swashbuckler Nyanta (who will be voiced by the excellent Mr Nakata Jouji), and how, through cooking, he spreads happiness to the people around him =3. This manga appears to be set after volume four of the novel, but doesn't have any major spoilers atm afaik.

And of course, "Nishikaze no Ryodan" (ログ・ホライズン ～西風の旅団～) =3

Actually do you know for a fact it's "nishikaze" and not "seifuu"?
I assumed the latter, as I figured he took the name from the brigade (of same name) in Eiyuu Densetsu series which read the same.
(considering the guild leader directly takes his name from Seto Soujirou from Rurouni Kenshin, and even mimics his look lol)

It should also be noted, that there's a lot of fanfics, doujins, and characters that were made by fans of Log Horizon, but later incorporated into canon by the author. She seems to adapt a semi-"shared world" approach to the series.

Could you check if it's Seldecia or Thaldesia/Theldesia btw? I think I saw Thaldesia somewhere, presumably in the main manga, but now I'm not sure if it's really the case (it might be just me hallucinating stuff >_>)

"Theldesia" is possible, but "Thaldesia" doesn't fit the pronunciation for セルデシア
Which doesn't mean impossible, of course, but I haven't seen it romanized anywhere.

Maybe it'll come up visually somewhere.

Yeah, in a way it's a clever move that allows him to benefit from an informal brainstorming process. However the problem with this approach is that this makes differentiating what's (currently) canon and what's not a real chore. This is why caution is advised when referring to the wiki that Mamare made. It's open to everyone which means the stuff found there can either be actual canon or fanon stuff (which in turn may or may not be adopted into canon...)

There are five volumes for the first arc, with the sixth (and thus first book of the second arc) coming out in Japan on 30 Mar this year. Each chapter starts with a page showing a character's stats (though really just the name, level, race, class, HP and MP, and with a measuring bar showing the character's height) and three items from his/her equipment, complete with descriptions (based on suggestions from the fanbase)

*Note: "won't die" here means the players, once killed, will be resurrected after some time, whether they want it or not, at their last save point. Of course, they will still lose exp, money and items upon dying.

At the first look this seems to have a least one similarity with SAO: lots of people trapped in a world identical to that in the MMO they're playing. However, aside from that:


- There is no attempt from either the writer not the chief protagonist Shiroe to identify this new world as a virtual game world. While game settings still apply and most ingame functions still working, the players themselves still need to attend to their biological needs (including the need to defecate) as any living human would need to.

In fact, while the players of Elder Tales were sucked into their current circumstances with absolutely no warning as well, there was no Kayaba Akihiko to tell them that, hey suckers, welcome to this virtual world, here's the rules of the game, including what you have to do to leave this place. Instead, the players of Elder Tales had to reach their own conclusions about what had happened to them and what they have to do from hence on. Most people accepted that they are in a virtual world based on the game (probably watched too much SAO) and treated their surroundings accordingly. However, to Shiroe and his companions, the world they were now in was as real as the one they had came from and they took it with the seriousness it demanded.


- While SAO was a game utilizing virtual reality technology, Elder Tales was something that you and I would be more familiar with, a MMO along the lines of RO, WoW, ECO, etc. A game where you, the player, interacts with your ingame avatar with a mouse and keyboard while watching your ingame self's progress on a monitor. None of those futuristic stuff in .hack and SAO (the story is set in 2018, just five years away from now), which in fact makes the "whisked-to-a-new-world" setting even more intriguing (the story up to volume 2 has shed no light as to how this had happened, or why).

The MMO is developed in America and is, in the story, well-established, with 20 years of service, 20 million players worldwide (of which a hundred thousand are Japanese), and the reputation for depth in both setting and gameplay (like a RPG version of EVE, I guess =3). The game world itself is based on a post apocalyptic Earth with a fantasy setting. Under its "Virtual Gaia" project, the game world is half the size of the actual Earth, with similar locations (in ruins of course). Players generally play in maps based on their own regions, but as the servers are interlinked, it is theoretically possible for players to travel to another region.

Like many contemporary MMOs, the player can decide on his avatar's appearance (including height), gender, race (eight choices), main job (twelve choices) and sub job (dozens. What's available varies depending on the service provider).

Races are pretty much fantasy staples:
- Human
- Elf
- Half Elf Half Aruvu (ハーフアルヴ), half-human descendants of the extinct Aruvu. Appearance-wise similar to humans with a strange emblem on their tongues.
- Dwarf
- Werecat (cat-like beastman)
- Wolf-hair (pretty much hairier humans with golden eyes and wolf ears)
- Fox-tail (beastmen with fox ears)
- Ritualist(?) (also known as the tattooed race due to the amount of tattoos on their bodies).

The same goes for the main jobs, which are divided into four categories:

Warriors (戦士系): Guardian, Samurai, Monk
Weapon-based attackers (武器攻撃系): Assassin, Swashbuckler, Bard
Healers (回復系): Cleric, Druid, Kannagi (think: Shinto priesthood and mikos)
Magicians, also known as Magic-based attackers (魔術系): Sorcerer, Summoner, Enchanter

While main jobs, once chosen, cannot be changed, sub jobs do not have this restriction and are relatively easier to level. Sub jobs are usually chosen for their abilities (e.g. people who like making weapons and armor will go for the Blacksmith) or for roleplay purposes (lots of these, like Vampire, Maid, Head Maid (....), Hitokiri, Noble, Landlord, Prostitute...).

A point to take note is that the players retained most of their characters' settings in this world, including levels, stats and gender. They do retain most of their original facial features though.


- Death plays a different role in Log Horizon. As mentioned, thanks to game mechanics working as usual, the slain player would be revived at his/her save point, usually the Grand Cathedral in the major player cities (five in the Japanese servers: Akibahara, Shibuya, Minami, Susukino and Nakasu; all named after real Japanese cities). Sounds great, doesn't it, especially compared to the tragedies death causes in SAO? However, the inability to die means the players are effectively trapped in a cage with no way out, creating a suffocating atmosphere where the world is colored in a shade of hopeless grey. More ever, outlaws would be more daring in their antics, since all death could do to them now was merely a penalty of some exp, gold and items, and nothing permanent.


- Finally on the characters themselves. Volume One focuses on Shiroe and his initial party, Naotsugu and Akatsuki, while Volume Two extents its attention to their friends in the Crescent Alliance. I'll briefly touch on Shiroe's party in the first volume:

Shiroe (シロエ, level 90 Half-Aruvu Enchanter):
Nicknamed the Sly Four-eyes, Shiroe is a university student who majors in Engineering and is about to graduate when he was sucked into the alternate world. By nature a cautious and thoughtful introvert, he has been an Elder Tales player since middle school, a veteran with a near-encyclopaedic knowledge of a game known for its depth. Though not really an anti-social person, Shiroe has his reservations with guilds, due to unpleasant experiences with people who sought him out only to exploit his expertise in the game. He was however a member of the informal group of players collectively known as the Debauchery Tea Party (放蕩者の茶会) and was its unofficial strategist.

Shiroe's main job, the Enchanter, is an unpopular job in Elder Tales. Lacking the firepower most would associate with a magic-user class, the Enchanter is a pure-support class (without heals, since it's not one of the three Healer jobs) that shines only when supporting the party with its buffs, de-buffs and binds (Nanoha fans, think Yuuno Scrya without the tough defense and you're near there). Shiroe however loves this class for its potential, the complexity of playing this job well and also because the idea behind this job, "a job that can't do anything on its own", offers an experience totally different from his character.

Though a loner due to the aforementioned reason, Shiroe is not above helping people who really needs the extra hand, though he would still hesitate at times, wondering if he's over-stepping his boundaries. However, once his mind is made up on something, he would use all means possible to achieve his goals, regardless the methods, thus the "Sly Four-eyes" nickname.

Naotsugu (直継, level 90 Human Guardian):
The Warrior of Panties, Naotsugu is the cheerful big brother character of the team, albeit one subjected to frequent physical abuse from Akatsuki. Two years older than Shiroe, Naotsugu is also a member of the Tea Party, and first met the latter four years before the main story. The two has been close friends since then and has even met offline a number of times. Due to work, he was absent from Elder Tales two years ago, and had the luck to be caught up in the mess on the very day he returned to the game.

A good person and a reliable tank, Naotsugu's greatest fault is his incessant need to crack off-color jokes, especially those on panties. OTOH, he's surprisingly shy when he's on the receiving end of such humor.

Akatsuki (アカツキ, level 90 Human Assassin):
A petite blackhaired beauty, Akatsuki possess a level of combat prowess that belies her small build. A serious person, she doesn't take kindly Naotsugu's brand of humor and dishes regular punishment, usually a flying knee to his face at blinding speed. For some reason, Akatsuki sees herself as a ninja, or more specifically Shiroe's ninja (whom she addresses as her "Lord"), which is reflected not only in her main job but also in her sub job choice: the Chaser, which specialises in tracking and stalking targets.

She is hinted to have actual training in the martial arts, which neither Shiroe nor Naotsugu possesses. Also, despite her loli appearance, she is actually around Shiroe's age.

Oops! If it's me that has led to this confusion, then I sincerely apologise.

For one thing, Shiroe has been playing Elder Tales for eight years, counting up to the day the world of Thaldesia suddenly changed from fiction to reality. Even for a casual player, eight years are enough to let a person level at least one character to a pretty high level. I'm a relatively causal MMO player too (and my current main isn't quite the damage-dealer... yet) and I managed to reach level 100 within a year.

But then again the game I play doesn't have death exp penalties and is relatively relaxed in terms of pre-100 levelling, so maybe it's not really a good comparison

In any case, we have folks like Shiroe here, who enjoys delving into the contents of a game, which in this case is Elder Tales. A hardcore player that truly knows and enjoys the game, and naturally progress faster than the causal guys. Well, at least, most causal guys that also play support I guess

I mentioned that Shiroe had avoided guilds ever since his experience with one (the first and probably also his last before the story begins) left him with a lingering bad taste about how people could use others so callously (he was in his middle school years, so, yeah, emo and angst~). This experience colored his outlook so much that for a period of time he avoided forming long-time relationships with other players. He either joined parties (which are temporary in nature) or went solo. While he's a lone-wolf in this fashion, during this time in the past he was not too against the idea of forming short-term partnerships when the need came up.

On a side-note things changed as he grew older and gradually out of that silly angst-filled youth (time washes everything bland, even emo. For most at least). And then there was the Debauchery Tea Party, that bunch of people bond by not ties of profit but the idea of enjoying the game to its fullest. That's should quite enough to thaw his shell =3


Regarding his choice of class, as mentioned, this is a guy that likes to explore what the game has to offer. To him, the Enchanter is a class that suits his tastes, one which according to Blessed Mamare, "comprises of a wide range of possibilities". Also...

So we have a guy that doesn't mind playing with a handicap; if there's one, he'll just work around it and still have fun

A few observations as well as comparisons with the novel:

• All the named Akiba-based Adventurers made at least a cameo in this episode.

• Akatsuki appeared a lot earlier than she did in the novel. As mentioned this episode condensed the events in the first two chapters into one day. Shiroe and Naotsugu actually met Marielle way before Akatsuki found them (or to be exact, Shiroe).
  
  A simple list for the events in the novel would look like this:
  Day 1:
  1. Shiroe and Naotsugu meets up.
  2. S+N meets Marielle while gathering info in Akiba's city square.
  3. Marielle brings S+N to Crescent Moon guild house so that they can speak more privately.
  4. Both sides exchange info on what they know. Due to the discouraging state of affairs, Marielle becomes a little depressed but Naotsugu cheers her up with some pep talk. Ensue friendly skinship as a touched Marielle sekuharas Naotsugu .
  5. Enter Henrietta, who rescues(?) Naotsugu from Marielle's lusty (busty?) embrace. Marielle extends guild membership to S+N. Shiroe refuses and Naotsugu joins him in that decision but both men promises to help out whenever the Crescent Moon calls.
  6. Chapter one ends (also, Day One of Akatsuki's intimate experience of the male physique )
  
  Day 1+~5 morning:
  1. S+N experiences this strange new world, including actual combat and tasteless food (Akatsuki continues her human male experience). The food in particular is a major turn-off; eating no longer comes with its pleasure but the Adventurers still can't do without food.
  2. S+N meets Akatsuki. Note that (s)he only used one pebble in the novel to catch their attention; the boulder comes from the manga.
  3. Akatsuki acquires the avatar reset potion from Shiroe. Cue form reset with loud and disturbing noise (like many chopsticks broken at the same time, or tearing a wet cloth apart at full strength).
  4. Akatsuki is released from her humiliating (and totally unwanted and unexpected) cross-gender experience.
  5. The bishoujo roleplayer has joined the party!

• The damage that our level 90ers took is seriously exaggerated in this episode. In the novel, Naotsugu, our tank, for example took single-digit damage from level 40~50 monsters. Even Shiroe, the magus with paper-thin defence, fared better in the novel than he did in this episode. I suspect this was meant to highlight the difficulty the Adventurers experience when fighting in this new world as well as to create some suspense.

• The pilot didn't really highlight the frustration that Shiroe felt towards those people who chose to lie around and whine. It's one of the things that drives him on: the desire not to end up like them.

• Unlike in the anime, where mobs magically pop into loot, characters have to manually skin/pillage monster carcasses to get their drops. Carcasses will vanished into particles of light after some time, but still it's a messy process.

Btw, a note to any subbers who happen to read this post, please note that Shiroe's race is Half Alv(?) (ハーフアルヴ) not Half-Elf (ハーフエルフ).

I'm not sure on Naotsugu and Marelle but the miko girl and the samurai boy is a pair and the long haired brown girl and the blond boy is a pair and it looks like they are all party together with shiroe.

The party of Shiroe is compose of 8 people.

Marielle is a guild master so she has her own guild to take care of but Shiroe and Marielle are friends so they usually met with the guild. Plus it looks like Marielle treats Shiroe as a little brother and call him Shiro-bou.

I would to ask for names and character info. That would probably help a lot on who is who.

She's a major character, but will not have any appearance other than flashbacks in the anime. She is one of the leads in the Overseas side-shot, leading Leonardo a Turtle Ninja yankee, Coppelia, a Chinese RMT bot who became sentient, and KR, a former DTP member summoner who manifested as a horse-fairy to travel the world.

Soujirou is one of the leaders of Akiba, and a harem lead. Former member of DPT and looks up to Shiroe, has his own manga series, and dozens upon dozens of girls. He leads the Nishikaze no Ryodan (The West Wind Brigade)

Shiroe schemes devise a plan to bring 11 of the leaders of the city (including himself) together, to form the Round Table Committee and make them listen to his demands.

I think there's some confusion there

Two of them - one is Akatsuki of course.
Minori isn't paired with her twin brother, no incest here.
She has hots for Shiroe.

The other two girls are... and this may be a surprise, but Henrietta from Crescent Moon.
The secretary looking lady who wanted to hug Akatsuki in the anime.

And the last is a female seductress who rules the player city of Minami.
She's completely batshit insane.
