Subject says it all, but again can anybody name anime where the main character is thought to be dead, but later returns?

Only one I can think of is Gundam Seed.

Recycling an old post this is the Big Daddy of all returns from Beyond the Grave . Its got guns gangsters action and tons of drama . To sum it up its Universal Soldier meets Scarface .

I think this is the right anime you are looking for it has healthy doses of the three elements you are looking crafted together to form this anime .

Does reincarnation count? If not, here are the recommendations:

Fate/stay night: The protagonist Emiya Shiro dies at the beginning and comes back instantly moments afterwards..

Shakugan no Shana: The Mystes Sakai Yuji dies near the beginning but he was brought back life moments afterwards. He is the container for the Mystes Reiji Maigo.
