New Hell Girl Series: Hell Girl: Fourth Twilight

Premise
Quote:
Stories in the Hell Girl franchise usually begin with bullied or tormented people accessing the Hell Correspondence website, allowing them to submit a request to eliminate the person tormenting them. It is then that Ai Enma, the titular Hell Girl, appears, and gives these people a doll that, once pulled, sends their tormentor to Hell, where Enma and her companions proceed to enact karmic torment on the doomed person. The catch is that the person who originally sent the request will be sent to hell as well.

Japanese retailers Tsutaya and Honya Club list a Kessakusen Kachōfūgetsu volume of Miyuki Etoo's Hell Girl (Jigoku Shōjo) manga in March. According to the listing, the volume bundles a booklet of production designs for a "new anime series of Hell Girl [starting] to air in July." The manga volume compiles popular chapters from Etoo's manga adaptation of the earlier anime.

Episode 1:

Holy hell (no pun intended), that was so good and nostalgic.

Just seeing Ai and the group back again doing their usual work gave me a smile. Vengeance has been delivered! This show exposes human emotions at its very finest and the first episode already shows that. Never trust anyone that you think isn't trustworthy. Anyways, I'm also curious about that other new girl Ai encountered.

Maybe a recurring character? I can't wait for more of this show. Fridays needs to come quicker!

Can't believe they're still using the website. Cute for nostalgia, but come on writers, it's 2017! Branch out a little. Social media is ripe for this concept.

I was expecting the new girl to interfere with the ritual, yet for now she's just an observer. Whatever twist she's going to bring better be worth reviving this dormant series for.

Ah. The atmosphere and the structure of the original Hell Girl is back. Though since it's been almost a decade since she's been seen I must admit I have forgotten what a lot of the previous seasons were about.

Well, for a first wild guess, completely out of left field... perhaps Tsugumi's daughter?

Still, without the misunderstanding Eve would've probably been forgiven and spared the trip to hell, since the misunderstanding turned the situation from "an honest mistake that she's trying to make up for" to "she's just playing me for a fool"

It's always these kinds of episodes of Hell Girl, where you know the person sent to hell is undeserving of it, that hurts. Hopefully next episode will have the "proper" targets for righteous disposal.

definitely, it is the 4th season, so I guess we be getting an even mix.

first season, the person sent was 'deserving' more or less.
so when they finally got to one after like 15 or so that didn't deserve it at all, it really hurt your gut.

still a bit off, so this other yokata dude goes out of his way to bring a laptop to this other classroom just to out this girl? I guess he is in the loner club for a reason, but that's a bit forced imo

"Shall not the judge of all the Earth do right?" The Christian situation where everyone deserves hell, until they trust Jesus to take their punishment, seems a great deal better than a world where God is absent and you can be sent to hell by mistake. As a certain Western put it, God, 'Might be harsh, but he ain't blind'.

I liked the OP, Ai seems as striking a figure as might be expected, but don't know that I'll follow this one.

At least Hell Girl has a more just premise than that old song about sending the taxman to hell if you only wish hard enough, 'The Devil and Bailiff McGlynn'.

Chaucer's 'The Friar's Tale' is the same thing, only funnier.

Having watched the 1st and 2nd seasons I stopped when I realized Ai and co are basically no different from your average cocaine addicted killer-for-hire in that they'll kill anyone.

The only difference is that they pretty much do it for free if Ai's statement in the first season about everyone going to hell anyway is true. The "two graves are dug" thing is bullshit.

Wasn't Ai only doing this thing because her parents were being held hostage by the grandma? What's the point in continuing this..job if it serves no mystical purpose other than dragging random people to hell for shits and giggles? That most of the victims deserve it is just a coincidence mind you, it could easily be the opposite.

I'm not sure how the concept of Hell works in a Shinto/Buddhist culture, especially how the "eternity of pain and suffering" bit jibes with a belief in reincarnation. But I don't think it's a case of "everyone going to hell." For one thing, we saw at the end of Season 3 that Yuzuki went to heaven.

The fact that the system is arbitrary and unjust has always been part of the point. It's supposed to be tragic. You're supposed to feel a sense of uneasiness about it. That's one of the major themes.

The system would be more meaningless than tragic if it was completely unjust. Both girls in ep 1 had sinned and went to hell for it. The boy escaped because the chubby girl was careless, which is part of her punishment. Neither girl was entirely bad, but even if we wish that they could've escaped, we should know that their fates were sealed by their own flaws, and that we simply don't have authority to say their punishment was worse than deserved. Tragedy has to happen for a reason, even the outcome is unnecessarily 'as bad as things can reasonably get', when human reasons and un-arbitrary principles meet an unforgiving system.

For it to be good tragedy, though, we need more sympathetic characters and a believable tragic process.

Being sent to hell for sending people to hell implies either that the subject of revenge did not deserve to be damned, or that they did, but other humans overstep their place by sending them there.
