I think some lessons from that old guide are still relevant today, like this one:

That's b'cos of the respect-expectancy gap, back then, subbers were respected by default and so they never had to go down the path of trying to show off, etc. to try to gain respect, admiration, or do the ego stuff. They already had it.
Even back then you had a few different philosophies, including some who did not want to be well-known or widely distributed. |

Thank goodness the Laser Disc and VHS era is over. DVDs are relatively cheaper and include so many more features. Back in the old days, Licensed VHS tapes would come in 2 flavors: subbed and dubbed. The sub was sometimes $10 more expensive than the dub! (wtf). Unlicensed anime *was* found in certain anime-related video stores ( Pandora's Cube in MD for example) but usually your best bet for finding VHS fansubs was to access a college anime club's collection or trade tapes via the mail. I'm glad we don't have to go through all that trouble nowadays. Also, Anipike was our only internet resource for anime in the mid-90s. I always considered it a giant mess :|
It's sorta amusing that guide ASR1 posted for VHS fansubbing was made when the first digi-sub groups were already well under way. tl;dr As an anime watcher, I'm glad the dark days are over.

I remember 1998 since that is when I first started into downloading fansubs. I was using IRC and a few other programs and sites to download fansubs. Most distribution was done by video back then but there was some distibution on the internet. Just to let you know fansubbing started either in the mid-80's or before since I remember finding information about fansubs from that time.
I am actually starting to dislike current fansubs since they are all going to hd w/ softsubs. I corrected the problem with slow downs with hd videos on my computer by upgrading it but I still have to convert most of the videos I show to my anime club to avi with hardsubs in order to edit the videos for the showings.
