From authors twitter, monsters in that trap chest room. thanks for BeginnerXP in baka-tsuki for posting this there in first place:

thats a good way to put it, or simply LN readers could take this as a tool assisted speedrun by kirito.

Decent episode. Maybe they could have replaced the OP and ED scenes with actual episode footage to expand the time he was with Black Cats. That might have helped ALOT. I give this episode an 8 for entertainment though, and getting it's point across.

Note: I am an Anime Viewer only. I have not seen anything on the Novels.

I have a feeling that Klein and the object that Kirito gave him which revives someone within 10 seconds may come into play at some point in this anime. It's just a thought that keeps running around in my mind

Producers definitely could've made this episode more dramatic. The sad notes just fell flat with all the quick sucessive time skips.

The time skips made me "Uhhh..." but now I'm getting the impression that the bulk of the story is what takes place on the upper levels among those who make it that far. So in that context, it makes a bit more sense.

Having said that, and at the risk of sounding heartless, if (and only if) the tale of Whats-her-name and the Knights of I-can't-remember-and-now-there's-no-point-in-looking-it-up was supposed to be a tragic self-contained story with characters whose absence will be felt... well, maybe they shouldn't have died seven minutes after I found out they even existed.

Again, assuming the purpose is to give insight into how Kirito becomes what he's going to be for the rest of the series, I'm cool with them taking an episode to cover this material, which I understand was a side-story to begin with.
Totally agree. We got to see that Kirito actually desires companionship and what the problems having friends cause him. Those characters are gone and won't be coming back. I think that they got the time alloted that they deserved.

^ Thing is, it didn't even showed the first ("Kirito actually desires companionship") and showed only a watered down version of the later ("problems having friends cause him").

In terms of the whole getting attached to characters bit I think an episode is more than good enough. If there's anything that "Natsume Yuujinchou" taught me is that one episode stories can have just as much emotional impact or more than a longer arc. It's all about execution. Not saying this episode was as emotional as one of that series' episodes, but it can be done. Overall it wasn't too bad. It could have been better, but I thought it wasn't bad.

I thought that they did a good job making you care about Sachi and that last message hit home for me personally. Yeah, the rest didn't really matter to me, but that one girl did and it was sad to see her go down like that. Glad she made that message for Kirito though since he really needed it.

I'm definitely getting a feel for Kirito and curious to see how he approaches interacting with people going forward. Has already had some tough experiences in the last two episodes.

damn, im so glad sachi recorded that message. if i were kirito i would have probably went insane after a while.
though it kinda felt obvious when kirito made that baseless statement on how she's not gonna die, she was actually. though the shocking part for me is how the last group member actually killed himself.
that item....10 seconds....damn.
actually, from the moment i saw sachi, i felt she was important, but i had a bad feeling it was only becuz she was gonna die.

At least it makes sense; since people really die if their HP loses 0, 10 seconds must be the transition time from comatose to deceased. It's still a great item, I wonder who it will be used on.

usually these 10 seconds its wath it takes in MMORPGs to respawn, the time someone has to revive you in some cases to prevent XP and money penalization, i think here its the time the nerve gear waits to fry someone brains after death in SAO.

Anyhow, the basic outline of the episode was competently done though you really can't build too much empathy through people that appear through half an episode. Basically, the moral here is that to level more and not to just let a high level carry you, otherwise you will die like a noob. Kirito feels unable to help and if he wants to lead will have to do so more strongly. And now he's back to soloing.

Decent episode, but certainly lacking impact. Then again, I'm playing D3 atm, so I can't help but think "lol noob" when people die.

You know, I'm not sure where people are (at this point in time) getting the idea that the writers wouldn't put more stuff in this episode if they could.

All that being said...

Klein and his Fuurinkazan guild mates look even cooler than I imagined. Like a gang of ronins straight out of a samurai flick or something.
He also provides an interesting contrast to Kirito, considering how he managed to become a "frontliner" despite having been a newb who couldn't even kill basic monsters on the first day and safely dragging his whole guild around.

As for the episode, they could have skipped the op and ed to gain some precious minutes of exposition. It had the gist of the story, but in the end there wasn't enough attachment to the characters, and a lot of info was skipped.
I'm not sure if this episode was really necessary to be honest. Originally (before the side story was written) it was just mentioned by Kirito in the main story. It could have been done as a flashback later in the cours. Now there's a bit too many timeskip jumping around.

Maybe they should have leaped directly to when Klein re-meets Kirto as episode 2. That would have keep my interest. Then have some flashbacks for these other stories.

For some reason I think this episode would have been received much better had they followed the sequencing of events from the LN

In fact after reading the SS this episode was adapted from I'm a bit baffled about why they decided to change the sequencing of events the way they did, but that is a discussion for a another thread

Well, this episode was not bad. Definitely has a touching moment there. Kirito crying at the end was done quite good, honestly.

Yeah, that definitely one of highlights in this episode, to bad the anime didn't even bother to explain whether Klein PKed that Dragon Guild or not.

I thought the episode was good enough, might have felt a little rushed, but it is only a side story. Not worth more than one episode.
Also, they should've skipped "A Murder Case in the Area" in my opinion.
