Just to be sure: Is this a honest-to-god, balls-to-the-wall-hotblooded-to-the-point-of-boiling-level shonen action series with a weird love of pastries or.. a mostly supernatural SOL comedy with a bit of action + harem hijinks on the side? If it's the latter do the female leads fight in the MCs place or is the "combat" in the form of cooking competitions(broken op power if so, JS). If the former, how does he fight...? Does he just summon the bunny in some kind of super bloodthirsty mode with a scythe and/or chainsaw?
(It sounds interesting enough so either way I'm going to read it but I'd just like to know what I'm getting into)
(The bunny would dual-wield)

It's not a shonen and doesn't seem to be a harem too. It's a little hard to slap a genre on it, but it's action + sci-fi + superpower battle. So far Alice and Shirley have been doing most of the fighting with their Dialect and Masaki without.

Volume 2 is going to focus more on Shirley and Koori, one of the Breaker supporters. I haven't heard anything about when Volume 3 is coming out so I hope it hasn't been axed D:

Volume 1 felt very much like an introduction to the series, that has a lot of potential. I'm hoping that in Volume 2 we find out more about the guys who were in the intermissions and get more information about the background.

Chapter 5 could have been done better...It felt kinda rushed but I did enjoy reading it.

The fights probably felt shounenish since Alice and Shirley are kinda OP already and they keep on saving Masaki XD But I liked the fact that Masaki knew how to fight without his Dialect.

The fan-service isn't that bad compared to other novels, but translating the prologue of Volume 2 was kinda awkward

From what I've read of Volume 2 so far, it seems like it's focusing on Shirley and one of the minor character of Volume 1 - Koori. We're also getting more information about the world and the intermission people are returning.

Spoiler for might contain spoilers on ch1+2: The bads: A lot of what I have read so far are rather stereotypical: - Childhood friend whom has no shame and gave the protagonist some facepillow service without even confirming his identity or catching up with the person - Tsundere ojousama who has trouble making friends but easily approached by protagonist, add some blushes here and there - Weak protagonist with top tiered potential - Shirley's Inoian Hetairoi666 fairies (forgot name) also holds untold potentials... - Team of student police, because you know, adults aren't allowed to be strong, and conventional weapons such as guns just don't work... gotta send in someone who can crush a building instead. - stupidly advanced military test labschool complex with the latest technology The start just lack... some sort of uniqueness which would allow the novel to stand out... to be different. I guess the fairy-tale-like setting can be considered as something which sets the novel part from your typical school-battle royale/fantasy/game genre . The good: Certain ingredients of the blended mix does strike the right cords with me - I hate downright overpowered protagonists, but I am also curious where UBWthe protagonist's power would lead him to... I hope my semi-troll post from earlier does not become reality (ie: to get around the restriction of his power via bending the definition of candy) - I am a sucker for stuff with a dark undertone. A bomb in the core of the city? Awesome! Mad scientists? Great! (* more on that later) (I have actually been wanting to read some sort of a dark fairytale-like story from jp) - I guess the heroines have their cute sides... I would still very much prefer if the author had toned down the mutual attraction by a few levels and let something develop over time. - I get a feeling of absurd craziness which might make combat to be fun as long as power levels are kept in check. I don't want to see their powers be artificially limited, or get hardcountered. A softcounter system where the enemy already prepared counters to nullify powers would be wonderful (as there are limited lv7s and their powers should be well known by now except for Masaki). (*) The rumor of such a detonation device imply the floating city is a controlled environment: so "normal people" may see the special gifted ones as monsters, which raises flags for all sorts of development, think something like Xmen. Also Canaan is written as "Paradise", supposed to be the promised land in the Christian bibles. Yet it is no paradise and the land has gone through quite a few major military conflicts which is still ongoing today. In the novel, your power level act as your caste: how can there be paradise under such a discriminatory society? How can the gifted ones (is there a name for them?) even "blend in" with the rest of the world if they come to believe they are superior? What if... it is the government's plan to keep the society under a caste system so they would never unite?

"Your best friend whom you just got into an argument with stole the childhood friend you have been doting over for many years" - oh the drama~! Also the standard indirect boob massage for Shirley, and a good look at Alice's naked body. (why is it so acceptable in the LN world for girls to grope each other?) - The whole Alice and Shirley fighting over Masaki scene is really cute. - Rose Garden: Masaki's Reality MarbleGlobalizer essentially creates a paradise. This forms a contrast with Canaan, the false paradise where the city is a "jail" for the gifted. - More thoughts on Rose Garden: so what exactly is the power? Ability to create another dimension? Zone of absolute defense? Do the food created within the dimension become "permanent"? Still a lot of mystery there... - The author left a lot of headroom for future "powerups". I am unsure how the levels are determined (raw power/rarity?) but "mastery of power" is certain not part of it. Alice has barely any tactical control over her faeries: in fact, she uses them like suicidal slaves... Masaki might be able to avoid attacks by either hiding or sending the attack into the Rose Garden... - Alice is cute. - Though I really do not like the ultra spoiled concept of someone so rich that they can just destroy buildings and not care about it. Money do not grow on trees... - I felt bad for Ishounuma at first: being ignored by Shirley in the first year, then see her just cling all over Masaki must have really broke something in his head... but this does not justify his choices: he stands for almost everything Shirley hated. Towards ch4 my feelings of pity has all been replaced by hatred: he is just an asshole. If he is a real man he would wish Shirley to be happy no matter who she chooses! - Ishounuma gives off the typical "miniboss" feel. Someone with a lot of raw strength but zero tactical mindset. The most dangerous enemies are those who just outright kills you before you even recognize the risk. ch5: - The "investigation" portion was really disappointed. It just seem... too easy. One would think someone smart enough to create such powerups and is a master in hiding would be much more difficult to find. - The whole "students can handle it themselves" feel still troubled me. Adults are once again useless. - Masaki can dodge bullets? I also think his brainless charge forward to save his waifus is really stupid. He might get himself killed by the defense drones... - One would think there will be a LOT more defenses down at such an essential area in a floating city. If the talentless Masaki can run past a portion of the drones (granted the area has been ravaged by alishirley already), then someone with a combat oriented Dialect can probably easily bypass the defenses... - I dont know why the eng translation has this chapter chopped into very tiny sections... - The end is pretty predictable. I don't like how the novel skipped out on the aftermaths of the terrorism attempt... - I want someone to make me an omelet rice one day with a ketchup heart too... Spoiler for overall impression: I think as the first volume it has laid down a lot of potential plot points which I have already mentioned: the Canaan as an utopian-jail, the divide among castes and regular humans. I have always imagined this "evil mastermind" music playing in the background as I read the intermission chapters. The "bad guys" were easily taken care of in this volume, I expect a more detailed evil masterplan to unfold in the future. The novel has a fairy-tale-like thematic element, yet... I do not feel it is being utilized well enough. I think it is best shown in the form of an anime and not LN. What I would like to read would be some sort of a dark-fairy tale - with all sorts of crazy people acting to their own ideals, etc... at the end, everything has a price. The fights in this novel is imo, pretty "meh". A lot too shounenish. I would like to see Masaki use a little more brains. The only thing he really came up with is to close the distances when facing off against someone firing off AoE spells. One of the things I dislike about the LN industry is the heavy involvement of editors ("thank you editor ____ for giving me such great ideas as to how a girl's boob should be groped"). As a new publisher I hope the editors do not interfere too much... The service is there (and still do not contribute anything to the story) but it is still within acceptable bounds. I would also like to see character relationship develop at a reasonable rate. I mean, we are only 1v in, and Alice already invited Masaki to live with her... (/phones the FFF) pls dont get friendzoned 7/10 Spoiler for On Alice: Alice hit one of my chords, that is, her proclaiment as a "king" but, what kind of "king" is she? I do not see the ambition of a king in her. She does not seem to have any ideals, or "a reason" to be a king. She is the person who became king because of her birth - but a weak king she would be if her powers is the only thing which formed her crown. In the volume, we can see how Alice cares very little about her 666 faeries: they are nothing but cannon fodders, one trick ponies, suicide bombers, slaves... They are not mindless being either: the griffon for example, has his pride as seen at the very beginning of the novel. "That is the type of king she is". Yet, on the other hand, she clearly cares much about her 667th servant: Shirley. Unlike her faeries, Alice cares much for Shirley's wellbeing. It still baffles me why the two did not reform partnership. I guess Alice trust Shirley enough to continue to be her friend, and that Alice know it is the price she must pay in order to secure her husbandoMasaki as her partner (yet I still wonder, why Masaki? - I wish the novel would some day explore the reasoning behind it other than "love at first sight" - maybe she was that desperate to make another friend, and need the contract as some sort of a forceful mean to bound them together). At the end, Alice desire companionship - a king by birthrights sits alone on his throne. Her facade as a king is only an excuse for herself to be isolated from the society. Maybe this is what dialect is all about: a fulfillment of wishes? It may be no coincidence that Alice is granted the power to summon her faeries, that Shirley posses a fist of justice, and Masaki the ability to create an utopia where he can bring happiness to his waifus.
