Granblue has a plot, albeit a bit classic. It still has a lot of "old JRPG" vibes due to its narrative and the world setting being very close to 2D FF games.
By itself, the plot is fine, but the end result heavily depends of the direction, and the cast as a whole. The series can be either a boring pile of JRPG tropes or an impressive and epic journey.

The design remind me of Idolmaster.
It seems the partial staff/cast list is posted on the website. Can anyone translate it? http://anime.granbluefantasy.jp/staffcast/

So, the special has aired, and it pretty much ended on a very obvious point:
Spoiler:
Note that the radio event after the TV special had Kanemoto (Djeeta's seiyuu) and the anime producer. The latter explained why Djeeta isn't in the anime: he was actually considering including her so they would have 2 protagonists. However, when they went back to cygames for the actual production details, cygames actually wanted to preserve the "Boy meets Girl" aspect of meeting Lyria, hence why Gran is the only protagonist for the anime. There has been some "hints" that Djeeta might appear in the anime, but without any details, it could be just for the preview/some 3 min specials or even just some random cameo in the backgrounds, so there isn't anything much to expect. Also, there have been at least 7 BR listed in most shops (due to the full set bonus code), so the anime series will span for 2 cour at the very least considering the first BR has 2 ep (usually, with that many BR volume, the first BR would only have 1 ep if it was 1 cour).

I feel like they introduced the characters well so far. Katalina impresses me the most with her mature personality. Oh and OP song is performed by Bump of Chicken! Quite noticeable.
I think the first two episodes (1-hour special) did a decent job overall for setting up the adventure. I'm pretty curious to see how they plan to develop Gran in the story.

After rereading the original opening chapter of the game, I realize that they actually extended it nearly 4 times. The actual events in the game were pretty short and borderline jarring in term of narrative (nothing involving the village, Pommern showing up immediately) as you could just clear that without text skipping within like 10 min.
Definitely an improvement considering they not only covered a good characterization for Gran, but they also give a much more needed characterization for Lyria and Katarina for the very start (that and the actual impression she was hunted by the imperial army). It also explains how Katarina let Lyria escape whereas the game pretty much left that matter to the player's imagination.

So given that this was originally supposed to air this season and it got pushed pack, will we be seeing these two episodes again come spring? Or are we starting on 3, and maybe even get an extra two episodes as a result?
I'd like to hope so, but since the most likely reason for this being pushed back was due to production issues, I'm not optimistic That said, if they can maintain this level of quality for the rest of the show, as a game player I'll be satisfied, even if my favs don't get featured. For anime only viewers, expect the story to be serviceable - Granblue's draw is its setting and visuals. |

I really like how they managed to introduce the characters in a pretty decent way, Gran is a very likeable MC same as Katarina and Lyria. For some reason it feels a little bit rushed but not in a wrong way, I think the pacing is quite good.
My only complaint is the animation and the fights, they look so below average. As for the story it seems quite interesting with the details about Lyria's power and why the empire is looking for her. OP and ED are good, really good. |
