The OP's just been announced - it's a cover of "You Raise Me Up", that cheesiest of pop songs (with over 100 covers already done!) by the "Korean Hikki", Lena Park. God, that sounds awful, but I suppose it can't be more "interesting" than Jean-Jacques thingy drunkenly slurring his way through We Were Lovers for Gankutsuou...

Even more characters have been announced, and the whole thing seems to be going VERY meta; not only do we have the mass conglomeration of various Shakespeare characters, but there's a character called William who's a playwright in the theatre that Juliet and co inhabit...

If any one can do meta it's Sato (Princess Tutu, anyone?) but I'm still vaguely worried that it could end up a horrible mess. I guess we'll have to wait and see...

"You Raise Me up?" Are you serious!? I mean, there is the miniscule chance that they'll do something incredible with the song, and it won't stink, but I've guessing it's going to be awful. However, there are good shows that have overcome crappy openings. Honey and Clover's psychedelic food opener comes to mind. Overall, I'll reserve judgment until I see it.

I'm still hoping that Sato give them the cohesion necessary to pull a good anime out of this project.

Why does everyone keep thinking Sato will do something and magikarry fix it, though? If his official credit is anything to go by he would primarily have influence mostly on the sound and acting, and not really the actual script or animation, would he? I don't even know how much he'd be involved in the last part unless it's under a pseudonym or it's just not credited.

But I wouldn't keep my hopes up for Sato doing stuff that would make it more like Tutu. (Coincidentially, for Tutu I have a vague memory that those meta episodes - which I loved - were scripted by none other than Chiaki J. Konaka, although I'm too lazy to check.)

Doh. I forgot he's the sound director and not the actual director! I feel like a right idiot now...

Guess we'd better wait and see.

Well, why not?

Most of the Shakespearean characters are fairly minor. For trivia's, for fun's sake, I might suggest.

As long as the main story remains interesting and they keep using Tchaikovsky, I would happily watch even the most convoluted and self-referencing of works.

All I ever here is the Josh Groban cover every single day at about 6:30 PM during dinner when my mother puts it on. Oh Boy....

There's a classic Romeo and Juliette theme song? What are you talking about?

He's probably talking about the Romeo and Juliet overture, composed by Tchaikovsky. It's quite a famous "love theme". In fact, you can hear it in the trailer to this anime. 8)

Personally, I like Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" ballet score a lot more than Tchaikovsky. The "dance of knights" (aka "Montagues and Capulets") piece is one of the most powerful musical numbers in existence (IMHO, of course).

In fact, I love it and I sincerely hope that they use it for incidental music!

Sakimoto's composed 30-odd tracks for the show; I don't know whether or not we knew Gankutsuou was going to use classical music as well as the Stranglers dude's stuff beforehand so I don't know if Sakimoto's involvement rules out any Prokofiev or Tschaikovsky (god I hope I spelt that right).

If Sakimoto's previous work is any indicator there will be a lot of very grandiose music anyway, but to be honest I don't know how he'll work with "finite" music - game music is generally designed to be looped over and over again, but I'm hoping things will be slightly less repetitive here.

So the official website, has a song playing automatically when you visit it. Would that happen to be the opening song?

Link - http://www.romejuli.jp/top.html

If so not really my cup of tea. I liked We Were Lovers better actually. But it may grow on me who knows? I wish this series would start. Does anyone know when is the date again? I thought it was April but now I've heard late March? Anyone know for sure?

I think that the song is good, not anything so special but still I like it, and it's something rare for me to like a j-pop song. It fits more for an ending song than for an opening, though.

It also could be that you guys don't like Josh Groban and his uplifting songs.

Josh Groban? Uplifting? He is a cheesemeister of the highest Cheddar, but I wouldn't call February Song especially uplifting, for example... anyhoo, I quite like the scratchy low-quality sample of the OP, and think it might work quite nicely. Wonder what the ED will be?

Anyway, Romeo x Juliet isn't starting in March; somewhat to my surprise, it's airing first on CBC from 4th April and then on TBS about a week later amongst other channels. I'd thought it would go to TV Asahi and replace Red Garden in the Tuesday night "slightly arty Gonzo show" slot (Gankutsuou, Garakan etc) but that doesn't appear to be the case. The advantage of the CBC airing is that it hopefully won't end up like TBS shows in where they save the widescreen broadcast for the BS-i airing two weeks later.

There's also a manga starting up in Asuka (venerable but struggling shoujo manga anthology that specialises in darker sci-fi/fantasy fare; home of X, Trinity Blood and Code Geass manga) at the end of the month, with a typically shiny promo image on the main website.

Anyway, thought I'd do an update regarding the characters because the site's been getting a lot of updates recently and I'm frankly really rather interested in how this show's going to turn out. I know much of this is in the thread already, but hey, I've got nothing better to do. Cut for spoilers if you don't want to know ANYTHING about the show's characters.

Spoiler:

I was reading through the seiyuu list, thinking... don't know that one.. who's that anyway... yet more unknown names... and then !BAM! — Aya Hisakawa and Ayako Kawasumi.

I love Hisakawa and it's a great thing that she's in this series. Too bad it's only an episodic character. 8)

Yup, that's what I meant. I just checked out the trailer and that's not the song...

And if the song on the official site is the opening song, I really like it. I don't really care for lyrics.
