I recommend Kara no Kyoukai, though the 6th film is a bit light and fluffy.

Bakeneko and Mononoke can be grim, but they're gorgeous to look at and compelling as well.
Claymore is a good choice as well. Mouryou no Hako and Aoi Bungaku are a couple of other shows you might take a look at.

Gungrave
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ Texhnolyze Karas (OVA) Strait Jacket (OVA) I don't recall any of these having any hint of humor anywhere (save for Phantom, as I didn't watch the entire show yet). Karas and Strait Jacket are both short OVA series with great action, gore and animation, but the stories are a bit thin since they're so short. The first three are compelling story-driven animes

I've seen death note, claymore, and have the gungrave/phantom/karas/garden of sinners and texnolyze.
Anything similar to Texhnolyxze and Serial EXP Lain and maybe Lucky Star? What I really want is something like Vagabond (Manga) or Berserk (manga or anime). Or maybe something that deals with Mob related violence maybe Yakuza based anime? Lol I can't imagine what would happen to the production team if they embarked on such a project. Tons of ultraviolence and blood and action. |

The action OVA Kite, which is about a teen female assassin who tries to break free from the control of the sleazy and corrupt cop that employs her, is extremely grim and virtually humorless as well as being over the top gory (most of the deaths reach overkill territory).
There's a hentai version and a non-hentai version, the story is the same in both but the former features sex scenes which are by hentai standards not very graphic but are disturbing in the story's context. Last edited by GreatTeacherKen; 2010-12-05 at 19:22. |

I personally dislike it, as its character designs are unorthodox enough to distract me severely. And its premise, though purportedly dark and disturbing, just doesn't horrify me as much as I feel it should — and that, again, is possibly because of the character designs, which are to me more comical than they are spine-tingling.
But plenty of this forum's members, whose views I respect, seem to enjoy it. So, on that basis, I'd recommend Shiki, an ongoing series based on a manga that is itself an adaptation of a set of light novels by writer Fuyumi Ono, who also wrote other stories that have been adapted into critically successful anime like The Twelve Kingdoms and Ghost Hunt. Shiki

Gungrave Ergo Proxy Last Exile Gantz Basilisk Wolf's Rain Evangelion Full Metal Alchemist (don't be deceived by some of the comedy relief, it is a dark, bloody story) Maybe Twelve Kingdoms - I thought the anime was absolutely amazing; it's kind of like Berserk without the action (if that makes any sense) Also, you haven't seen the Spawn comic from HBO, you should watch it. It's great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyp4SdVUjuI |

Geez they almost said all the ones I wish to recommended..
It's not that dark and gore either but it's hmmm how can I said it, it's on the line of a dark show... recommending Mushishi and Kure-nai too, though if you're fine with it, you can also read the manga for the continuation or for the real plot About the Azumanga Spoiler for DarkSide:

Not sure if it really fits for what you want, but I think Kino's Journey is a pretty dark show in a dystopian world kind of way.
As for dark and gritty with no sense of happiness, somehow the first show that comes to mind is Saikano. If that isn't the most depressing gut punching show ever, I don't know what is. It is a tragic romance though. Not in the angst ridden shoujo manga kind of way, but still a romance if that's not your thing. Edit: Not that there's anything wrong with angst ridden shoujo manga type stories... |
