gift-giving events...*groan*
Has even Valentine's day devolved into something where items are given out of courtesy, and with the expectation that they'll get return gifts of equal value? Am I the only one that thinks this is retarded? It's even worse on birthdays, anniversaries and christmas, when more stuff of higher value tends to be gifted. Good gifts with meaning are not something that I can come up with multiple times a year to keep up with all these events...

I'm still shipping Haruhi over Nagato. I haven't read the manga so I might be wrong... but I don't think this is going anywhere anytime soon. Every time Nagato "muster" the courage, someone else jumps in and spoil the party.
I liked the episode though. Also, is it just me or did the "Kyon" that met with Haruhi in the past (when he drew the message) looked rather young. Perhaps I need to watch that passage again. |

The Kyon that met Haruhi in the past would be the Kyon you see now, from three years ago. The 12 or 13 year old Kyon, rather than the time traveling high schooler Kyon.
If Kyon decided to stay in Nagato's universe, the reset doesn't take Kyon back, but is used instead by Nagato to complete the universe with Kyon having been in it the whole time, rather than being the only one not changed. Thus, it is normal averge younger Kyon when gets drafted by younger rebel Haruhi.

We still don't know what Kyon's name is. He doesn't really like the nickname Kyon, but deals with it. For all we know his name is John Smith. But giving a false name that is that generic still fits if Kyon doesn't want this hyper-angry looking girl knowing him.
Also Nagato works with what she knows. That happened, so she changed only the bare minimum.

Well at least haruhi didn't lie about her feelings for kyon, it would have looked bad if she had lied. This spin off is killing me, Nagato is my fav character in suzumiya universe but I'm hard shipper of haruhixkyon, can't help to feel bad for nagato but happy for haruhi and vice versa.

I also enjoyed this episode a bit more than previous ones ... a little more "real interactions" in a way % wise.
Still greatly loving the series' contrasted character interactions with the source material.

is this what Nagato wants in her universe? i still can't get interested in her interaction with Kyon - so boring. at least have some reference to books that the true Nagato loves to read.
anyways, that last bit of "John Smith" is mysterious because there may be a path that leads to Hurahi's universe! |

I 've been rewatching the original series (in broadcast order) and realizing that I still think it is a masterpiece. I was getting ready to say that this new series is an insult to it. But this ep was excellent. I began to appreciate the alternate world in its alternateness. And I actually admired some of Chihara Minori's voice work as Nagato. This is a lower order of art (visual and dramatic) than the original, so far, but at least worthwhile in its own right.
Haruhi herself is outstanding. That great slide from standoffish pride to a bit of relation to others (started by Kyon), and her realizing it, was beautifully drawn and voiced. I thought I was over Hirano Aya but no: she really is excellent here, creating a character that is so much more present and real-feeling than any of the others except Kyon (who has an advantage as the narrator). I also began to get Chihara Minori's ED, and to be able to enjoy the artificial (to me) vocal style. It didn't last, and the main part of the song as written seemed boring and same to me. But maybe it's just a matter of style, and I'll get it eventually. Her voice is marvelous, in any case.

Haruhi characterization really is interesting in this, and I say one of the major reasons is Asakura. She willing to challenge her and ask the sort of question that the SOS members wouldn't.
And it really mean we get to see Haruhi's deeper layers a bit more. "Do you love Kyon?" "I don't dislike him." Can you imagine Asahina asking that? There clever use of Show not Tell with the John Smith stuff, and the way Haruhi body language is used to show how she's feeling is clever too. |

Wow, this episode was really amazing. Still, I can't help but wonder what's going on in that head of Kyon. He went looking for Nagato, and even have Haruhi congratulate him for that, but still he reached the conclusion that Nagato's chocolates were Giri? What drove him to look for her in the first place then?
Also, as of now I can't decide which ship to sail. I never shipped anyone in the original version, and it helps that Haruhi was so long ago so I don't have any excess baggage when I watch this. I am really enjoying the character interactions at the moment. Also, I guess I'm in the minority in preferring this Nagato over the original.
