Well, I think that from this year out it's going to get a lot harder to use DVD sales as a pure basis for comparison and analysis. Now that Starchild/King Records has started soliciting anime on Blu-Ray, some people may hold off on purchasing DVDs from them unless they come with great extras. Toradora! is a pretty run-of-the-mill standard King Records release in terms of packaging/extras (not content, of course!), and knowing that it, along with every other J.C.Staff show, is produced in HD makes me wonder if they're just going to turn around and solicit a Blu-Ray boxset right after they release the last DVD, thus screwing over anyone who would have bought the Blu-Rays if they had the choice at the time but decided not to wait. So anyway, all I can say is that, for myself as a pretty big R2-J media purchaser, it's getting harder to decide what to invest in and what to wait on, and I expect I'm not the only one who feels this way. So, we'll see -- it's one more thing to factor into the equation, anyway.

I was most surprised by the good showings for Hidamari Sketch x365 and Natsume Yuujinchou and saddened by the absence of Kure-nai from this list. In retrospect, offering Zoku Natusume Yuujinchou on Crunchyroll seems puzzling, since it might cut into DVD revenues, but I guess people in Japan can't see that show on Crunchy?

Crunchyroll is completely region locked out of Japan. People from Japanese IPs (like me) cannot watch anything at all, in fact it refuses to even load the video player .

It's been that way for a while, actually, even before the "revolution".

Yeah the lack of Kure-nai is really dissappointing since I'm hoping for the later parts of the story to get adapted too.

EF's not on their either, but at least with that one the story is finished and you have some Bluray sales to fall back on.

No. Anyone from Japan that sends Crunchyroll money is going to be sorely disappointed. They can view absolutely nothing on the site.

Finally! Blu-Ray numbers aren't a complete mystery anymore, starting with this week's sales! I was afraid that DVD numbers wouldn't be all that useful anymore to tell how popular a series is, due to the increasing number of BD releases - I'm glad I didn't have to worry all that much.

Now I know that Queen's Blade hit the 10k mark. Same for Index, it's working as well as Shana for J.C. Staff then.

Are all these <1000 sales titles actually selling <1000 or is it that they just don't even chart during their initial weeks so their primary sales numbers are lost?

If a show doesn't chart during the first week, chances are that it'll never chart during subsequent weeks. Sales are ridiculously front-loaded (even for hot titles, we're talking about up to 90% of total copies sold during the first 2-4 days) with most titles disappearing off the rankings after 1-2 weeks.

Barring inaccuracies in tracking and extrapolation, it's safe to say that those numbers are good approximations for actual totals.

It's really insane how high fujoshi-bait type anime are selling. Though at least male otaku can be contented in having a much further breadth and number of shows.

Was quite surprised to see My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, and Kiki's Delivery Service on the ranks given how long ago they were released. I figured that anyone interested in those titles would have had it by now.

It's not a matter of "anyone interested bought this on day 1", it's a matter of "it's little Taro's 6th birthday shall we get him a movie". Taro was putting all his effort into not being a stain on the bedspread back when the disc was released.

I don't think it's that exceptional compared to other BD releases, if you look at as just "12 R2 BD volumes, just all bought at the same time."
