Certainly there'll be no beach episode...but you never know.
BETA fights in the Balkans, maybe.

Also, I think humanity needs to give serious consideration to bringing back battlefield thermonuclear weapons here; the all-conventional approach clearly isn't working.

Yes, I am aware of the failure of this approach when used by the Chinese and Russians. (And the article on the wiki; the author forgets to account for the infrared heat flash; the atmospheric heating is only a side effect of that)

However, If one examines the situation, the nuclear strategy there probably wouldn't have worked much better against a large human force prepared to cope with radiological environmental hazards and/or with unlimited morale and zero concern about casualties.

The cause of failure is twofold, and both can be tied back to the destruction of the communist conventional forces prior to the switch to a nuclear strategy.

First, while thermonuclear weapons effect a large area, their area of effect is tiny on a geographic scale. This means that, once the field army is defeated, the BETA have no need to maintain the colossal assault concentrations seen during, say, the invasion of Japan or massed against the hive assaults.

Now that they have the luxury of spreading out, which they can do without effect on their chain of command (such as it is), they can disperse aginst a nuclear attack and minimize its effect.

To show, a W88 warhead (475 kt) has a thermal radiation radius for 100+ cal/cm^2 of about two kilometers, covering an area of 12.5 square kilometers. If we represent a dispersed BETA force with Destroyers or Grapplers abstracted to geometric points and spaced in a 100-meter square grid, we have one hundred large BETA per square meter, and thus the nuclear weapon only destroys a battalion-size swarm.

However, a Flight of F-15s with even merely competent pilots could make short work of this sort of dispersed formation; it would only be practical if the conventional threat was minimal.

Take the other extreme; a Destroyer-class phalanx with Grappler-class backing, like the swarms we see in the Invasion of Japan in Total Eclipse.

Height chart says the Destroyer is sixteen meters tall, and Photoshop says its about as wide. So if we suppose the BETA are advancing in assault waves with Destroyers in 20-meter 'slots' in four rows along the front, and Grappler-class in semi-staggered 15-meter slots fifteen ranks deep behind that*, we have about a thousand BETA per square kilometer, and our bomb purges a cool fifteen thousand xenos abominations.

Also, both scenarios fail to account for Tank-class; it should be noted that their much lower surface to volume ratio means that the thermal flash would be lethal to them at a much greater range, probably lethally affecting them over at least five times the area thanks to the 'pi-r-squared' thing. This also fails to account for the utility of punching holes in the BETA line to exploit with mobile forces; a TSF cockpit is sufficiently shielded by simple virtue of the surrounding mass that ionizing radiation will pose a thermal hazard before it reaches intensity suffice to engage the pilot.

In any case, Laser-class interception would be about equally effective, and could be counter fairly easily by way of ground-hugging cruise missiles or nuclear artillery of a situationally appropriate caliber (with base-bleed shells and guided munitions, of course).

*All based on visual analysis only, though I made it quite a bit lighter than a lot of the stuff from TE or Operation Lucifer

Not an expert by any means but wouldn't nukes be useless against hives anyway? At most they could destroy the monument, leaving the underground forces pretty much intact, and I don't think radiation harms the BETA. At least not in a noticeable way.

That, my friend, is why we have Dimensional Collapse Gravatic Stragetic Weapons. The U.S. Aerospace Corps completely revesed Opperation Lucifer and enabled the first human conquest of a Hive ever in around six minutes with two warheads droped from satellite orbit. Thermonuclear weapons would be for surface combat.

That said, there exist metods to shape or direct the detonation of a nuclear weapon. Casaba-Howitzer, an outgrowth of Project Orion, is of particular note: upwards of eighty percent of a weapon's output concentrated into a cone bettwen 22.5 and 5.7 degrees across.

The strategy that emerges here, if you have decent maping data and no one (Not going to name any names, Yuuko) tampers with it, would be to use ground-penetrating weapons with shaped warheads to collapse Hive sections to isolate a single axis of advance to the main hall within a minute or so of the M.I. tounching down, then run everybody down that tunnel to chuck metaphorical atomic hand grenades at the Reactor before the locals can tunnel into position to cut you off

Didn't they use g-bombs in Operation Lucifer? There is also the matter of how many hives they could destroy this way before the Superior sees through it.

Also, I missed talking with someone about MuvLuv. All the brainstorming despite knowing is a unwinnable situation is pretty great.

Yeah. Lucifer started off well, but worsened rapidly. U.S. Space Command then told everyone to clear out; the first G-Bomb hit a few minutes later and annihilated the Monument, along with most of the BETA on the island.

The second warhead finished the job.

Though it's not strictly unwinnable; just very, very, difficult. If we're willing to pull out all the stops... well, lets call it Alternative VI.

U.N. Security Council: The Alternative Program is to enter its Sixth Iteration. Leadership shall remain with the United Sates, as the proposed Sixth Iteration retains the core objective of victory through quasi-conventional military action.

The Sixth Iteration, rather than a single method of ending the BETA threat directly, is to be a series of parallel projects to develop combat systems to improve the stragetic paradigm such that victory is possible by conventional means.

Objectives are as follows:

NOTE: Comparisons to development programs by undertaken by certain Axis states in the final year of the Second World War are forbidden; violators will be strictly disciplined.

ONE:

Cybernetic technology exists at present; from this, employing principles from the BETA... things... holding the HUMAN BRAINSSSS if necessary, generate a full Man-Machine interface to reduce control delays imposed by the presence of any mechanical components in a surface fighter control array. This system would allow the greater exploitation of high-maneuverability capabilities, as well as a allowing a pilot to secured more effectively, possibly via fluid suspension, against acceleration forces.

NOTE: No intention to at some point begin permanently hardwiring pilots into their machines is exists at this time, and rumors to that effect should be discouraged. That said, the REDACTED

TWO:

The development, Employing the Grey-Series Materials ('G-Elements') if necessary and existing or development synthetic compounds of similar properties if possible, a controlled, continuous, and efficient atomic fusion reactor with an output, power density, and downward availability suitable to power an interstellar interplanetary warship, and for use on a mobile ground/aerospace combat unit if practical.

NOTE: At no time in the foreseeable future is there any significant chance you will be issued a laser gun. All such requests should now be submitted to the incinerator.

THREE:

Creating and perfecting a method to, with a practical application of warmaking materials and labor, extract Grey-Series Materials ('G-Elements') from battlefield debris, namely organic material formally constituting the enemy 'Lux', 'Gravis' and 'Magnus Lux' units, so as to establish a more consistent supply of such materials and increase the procurability of technology dependent thereon. Secondary objective being the processing of carapace found on more common enemy strains for the same objective, and the development of improved ballistic, refractory, and structral materials.

NOTE: This idea was under consideration before I played Enemy Within. If you think something you see in a hologame is a good ideas, assume you're wrong.

FOUR:

The deployment of heavy-lift surface-to-orbit nuclear pulse propulsion vehicles so as to allow a vastly increased military presence in satellite orbit, increasing overall capability for orbital bombardment and the viability of Orbital Drop operations, reduce the extra costs associate with such maneuvers, and increase the success rate of the Orbital Diver Corps above its presently abysmal level.

NOTE: Seriously, you people are an embarrassment to the Mobile Infantry. Are you even trying to get your money's worth with your atomic weapons?

FIVE:

The design and production of a nuclear artillery weapon suitable for use on the A-10 or comparable platform. Also included is the refinement of more aggressive defensive tactics, e.x. large-scale encirclement and dynamic front tactics; mobile use of Tactical Surface Attackers by breaking destroyer lines with atomic munitions so as to allow and aggressive advance, leveraging the superior firepower of the platform with escort by mobile units to maximize suitability. Upgrades to the Attacker frames are also induced in the above.

NOTE: I don't care how much Samurai Honor it doesn't have if all you need to do is pull the triggers and world turns to blood.
