Agreed. Reading the chapter. More than cockiness, I'd say that those are eyes full of greed and anticipation: From his first shokugeki, he had his sempai teach him the secrets of grilling skewers. It's very likely that his other shokugeki conditions are the same, so from those three senior students that he defeated, he ends up absorbing/stealing/learning everything he can to improve his own cooking, just as in the stagiaire period.

Now on a different topic... Talking about the elite ten... If I'm right in assuming that their numbers equal their rank, that means that Erina is at the bottom of the group. Some people have been talking about a showdown between her an Soma, and considering her rank I wouldn't think that's entirely unlikely... It would be quite interesting if he ends up outranking her by defeating someone above her, or if she ends up being kicked out of the group because of him, while this last one would be an incredibly bold and refreshing move, I have my doubts about the author making it happen... Would be even funnier if her Grandfather ends up sending her to the Polaris dorm so that she can "discern why she was beaten"

He told them he's looking forward to learning from them, which is basically just saying that he'll defeat all challengers. Earlier he told Shinomiya that he wants to compete with other students until no one wants to challenge him anymore, and that he plans on making a name for himself.

Basically my point is, that Souma seems to be very confident that he can take anything the Academy can throw at him, which seems premature when he never seen the real top students in action.

I think the next event will make Souma realize how amazing the Elite 10 really is and how much he has yet to improve if he wants to reach the top of the academy. After all we are only at the first year - if Souma was already close to his goal the story would have nowhere to go.

Considering that Soma was under the ex first seat of Elite 10 aka Shinomiya's tutelage, i dont think he would be impressed/shocked by current elite 10's power. Their skills will be in his realm of expectation Unless one of them is Asura level.

People hate Erina not because of she is cocky and arragont. It was her action.

Do you see Soma abandoned Megumi or others when they lost the matches in shougeki?

Do you see Soma lied when he tasted his opponent's delicious food?

Do you see Soma acting like sore-winner?

Soma made a lot of friends despite being a transfer students. If anything, Soma is one of the friendly dude in the manga. Even Alice, a NAKIRI enjoy talking with him. In fact Soma even risked his future just to get back all those knives for other people that he didn't even know.

Erina and Soma are totally different.

We really need more context on what the showdown entails first.

Is it some sort of 1 vs 30 cook-off? Or is it an multi-stage event where everyone gets to dip their toes against each one of the Elite 10? Or is it a Elite 10 chooses an opponent they like from among the first year batch, going from #10-to-#1, and only 10 first years get the privilege?

I mean, if it's the last one, I see Erina choosing Hisako or Alice. And Alice is if only Hisako refuses because she doesn't want to rely on Erina to 'elevate' her as one of the chosen 10.

I don't see why she would want to team up with Alice, given their history.

Megumi would be the more likely candidate, imo, should Hisako not be available to her.

And if its a team-based battle format, the level of playing field has to be balanced (via seeding), so they may be paired with someone they do not particularly like/favor.

1. If that is what you want to believed it, so be it, but it doesn't change the fact that Soma will not abandoned his underlings, minions, and friends if they lost a match.

2. Again, Soma will not lie just to save face if the foods that he ate was delicious.

The point is, Erina =/= Soma. Both of them are not alike..at all. The only traits that both of them shared was cocky, but then, 98% of the students who study at that school have that traits too.

I dont see why any character should lose their ego, like, they do have a lot of things to justify their bragging. The thing should be to make them learn that there is more that what was in front of them till now, that there is more to every gourmet thing they have tastes till now.
tl;dr, they need some common sense.

Erina is currently, or better since the start of the series, a complete bitch. She doesn't acknowledge Somas cooking talent and even tries to expell him from the school. This hasn't changed the whole 117 chapters, so absolutly no character developement (which is a little bit sad if she is/should be a/the heroine).

I think her character will only start to develope if she gets clearly beaten in a match against Soma. Then she must admit that Soma has talent even if he is only a commoner/plebeian (until she learns of his dad...).

Hopefully this happens in the next arc, because her bitchiness is starting to annoy me a great deal. I only want her to be more grounded and not so conceited so that she understands that even in her generation are people who are capable of winning against her.
