Another great episode! The 2nd episode had a nice progression, as we begin to learn more about this world and the story behind it. The visuals were great as usual, and story is slowly evolving. Violet is slowly growing as a human, but it's going to be a long road.

However, the words "Never coming back" is different from "Has died." It could mean so many different things. It could mean that he is in a coma, he is mentally unstable, physically unable to come, locked away somewhere, or just plain passed away.

Anyway, I love the progression in the episode and was glued to the TV. I very much look forward to the next episode.

There are several things going on here. We have the recurring problem with Hodgins thinking about Violet's situation with Gilbert, and we have the introduction of the frustrated Auto Memoir Doll Erica and a serious problem in the Hodgins Auto Memoir Doll Company (which is related to a lack of manpower more than anything).

It's not really frustrating to see customers rambling about poor service. After all, they are a new company with its growing pains, and the company itself is rather dysfunctional with employees not acting friendly with each other and Cattleya was able to do that to Hodgins. And well, it seems like every single employee has their own stories to tell.

I hope we'll never see any more people asking if Violet is a doll after this.

Violet is self-absorbed and for the most part incapable of feeling empathy. I've no idea how she could ever do this kind of work. She can't understand her feelings, let alone someone else's (and she doesn't care about anyone else to begin with). It's impossible.

I wonder how KyoAni is gonna solve this problem. Are they just gonna do a time skip to when she's able to do it? That would be pretty cheap.

It's a slow path for Violet and not necessarily going to be a pleasant one. Sad on a few levels how she was turned into a weapon. Certainly an interesting approach though basically having her become partially mechanical before starting on the path to becoming human.

I'm still running with Gilbert being dead unless someone in that show states otherwise. Just set for good drama or tragedy here. Violet will figure out what Gilbert meant and her own feelings long after he's been gone.

Still, I'll give that guy some credit. Gave up a lot out of his own pocket to get that broach back. Considering it is probably the only present Violet will ever get from Gilbert that makes it all the more precious. Once Violet really finds her humanity, that broach will be an all too important item to remember Gilbert by.

Seems pretty straight forward to me. The show is literally going to be about her finding her humanity and thus her empathy. She'll learn to understand herself, experience a deep loss, and will lead her to be able to empathize strongly with the loss others are feeling. Yeah it would be cheap to time skip to the point where she could do it. Since that seems to be a major point of the show.

There is literally zero chance for that to happen, the first 2 episodes (that by the way don't follow the LN) pretty much established that she loves Gilbert to the point of not giving a damn about anyone else but him, in fact the last scene already tells you that in the more obvious way.

She just want to learn what love is to understand her own feelings for him and that's it, the rest of the characters doesn't matter.

Hodgins worries me, though. I feel like Violet haunts him like a ghost, reminding him that he was a soldier that belonged to an army that used girls like Violet as weapons, and trying to "appease" her is the only way he can move on from his military past; so far, it's wearing down his sanity more.

I don't think a man is the answer, dead or alive, but I like AB079's answer. Violet needs to understand the love she's lost.

That's just what she wants. It's not what the show is about. The main point here is Violet's development as a person. It's true right now she doesn't care about anyone but Gilbert, but that's just room for character development. She will learn to care about others. That's what the show is really about.

On that note, I think there won't be any romance in this show. Even if Gilbert is alive, I very much doubt they're gonna end up together. I get the feelings he left her with Hodgins because he realized she would never become her own person as long as he was around (provided he's not dead, of course).

At the moment is not right to say "the show will be about X or Y" because the director is not following the LN. What is already established with just 2 episodes is what's on her mind, who's in her heart all the time (Gilbert) and who's the only one she really cares about. Of course there is room for further developments regarding Violet's personality, because she needs to learn a lot of things about life, especially from the people around her.

Just the rest of the series will tell what direction the anime is going to take from now on. Personally I'm still against this direction, can't elaborate further because this is the anime thread.

Honestly, you don't need no LN to see where this is going.

Does it matter if it doesn't follow the LN to the letter? And well, there are some scenes, like Erica's monologue on the Auto Memoir Doll concept, that are 1:1 from the LN.

As it stands, there's no Musaigen no Phantom World issue. Let's leave the overthinking when the changes become considerably huge.

You already forgot this is Kyoani? and what happens when they don't follow their own source materials?

Some people really fell for the huge amount of promotion from Kyoani, forgetting what's been happening for years. At least VEG has more chances to be good thanks to the nature of the source.

I actually feel the novel is quite flawed so I welcome the changes. This episode felt clumsily put together but at least they're trying.

Oh by the way, I was reading on 5ch some comments that the director said the first 3 episodes felt kind of disconnected/weird because they were under a lot of pressure since these episodes were shown on theaters as promotion for the series. Don't know if all of that is true but seems plausible judging by the reactions of the viewers when ep 1 and 2 came out for everyone.

"Never coming back" doesn't necessarily mean dead and the way the series keeps skirting around actually saying that he is dead leaves me wondering if something else hasn't happened to Gilbert. He could be in a coma, imprisoned, etc.
