People/Muslims in SE Asia should be careful about fast food chains they're familiar with when elsewhere in the world. Fast food chains use whatever is "acceptable and legal" in different regions. In the US - it can be rather surprising what is "okay" in fast food (hamburger patties with wood as a major ingredient, animal fat in french fries, etc)

KFC (in the US) ... whatever their "original recipe" is now, it doesn't much resemble the "original recipe" I remember from 30 years ago, by the way.

I don't know about everyone else, but I sure as hell am not wasting meals at fast food joints if I go travelling.

Or eat Vegetarian food. There are Buddhists in Japan so there's probably restaurants that cater to Buddhists/Vegetarians.

I could only imagine eating Halal in Japan is hard. In particular you probably won't be able to get "certified" Halal food. Not a big Muslim population there.

Which probably means you can't get Kebab either...

In order for food to be "halal" or "kosher", it has to pass through certification from an Abrahamic religious council.

In Singapore, it is certified by MUIS. I am not sure about it elsewhere....even much less outside of SEA where Islam is unheard of (or even marginalised and despised thanks to Bush's crusade gone wrong).

Be careful when eating in Japan, cause there is no organization supervising the terms halal. And in Japan, pork is one of the main ingridient for dish (even in the sauce or soup)

So to muslim, better check the information regarding halal restaurant there.

And what irritates me is...
This news comes out one day after i bought my ticket to Japan...

You should be safe sticking with a rice, fish and vegetable diet I think.

Plus there should be less hidden pork products all around (most of their gelatin stuff is generally konnyaku or agar-agar based).

Now for any kind of Halal certified meat, you'll have a hard time finding any, altough I wouldn't dismiss some Halal restaurant or groceries existing in Tokyo.

There is a catch, of course, though it's not a really drastic one. You have to publicize your trip on a blog or social network site.

That's not too bad, but do you have to make a certain number of posts a day? What if you go out for a drunken round of karaoke one night and miss a night?

Also, what if there's no net cafe near your hotel? Yes, I know they're almost ubiquitious in Japan, but what about a classic ryokan? And if you bring your laptop, I don't think you'll have wireless Internet at the more traditional places.

It makes sense. Trying to grab influential bloggers to write that Japan is safe after all the devastation it endured. So tourism can rise back up again and eventually airports will be filled with passengers
