Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Episode 17 Discussion Thread
--- RRW will be out for a spell, so I'm taking over the thread creation while they recuperate/study/travel/party/have-fun-elswhere or whatever (pm me if you need any help). Please be gentle with me, it's been some time since I last traversed these pages/sub-forum , and don't worry, I won't change too much in the interim (I seem to recall some backlash over my goofs concerning some of the changes I made to the polls when I was here last). This episode is entitled: "Kudelia's Decision" Last edited by james0246; 2016-01-31 at 00:18. |

I guess this is the turning point episode which lead everyone to their respective fate and future. I mean seriously, EVERYONE. Princess Kudelia standing up, Mikazuki's forever follow Orga start to waver and have his own will bit by bit. And other people also.
Sadly i can pretty much see how this gundam series will end, everyone will die and the last man standing type who is Kudelia.

I am no seeing the wavering...Mika has always been like that...the relationship hasn't changed yet as far as I can tell. Mika pushes Orga and vice versa.
Kudelia finally taking some initiative is the big change. I do expect us to be packing some body bags soon enough though. |

Nice. Although the total amount of time that passed in the world was small this was a fast paced episode. Things are really shifting.
It's almost too big a change for Kudelia - I expect there'll be some complaints even. Though we have seen Kudelia hesitate a lot we have also occasionally see her be decisive too. That hesitation has been burned away now it seems. Level up in badassery achieved! |

Gotta say that I like how Kudelia's message reached everyone thanks to the TV crew stationed in Dort 3. Looks like Nobliss Gordon won't have to kill her yet...
Meanwhile, I wonder if Mikazuki is starting to slow down a bit as Gundam Barbatos couldn't keep up with the likes of Gaelio Bauduin's Gundam Kimaris? Also, gotta dig Gusion's new look instead of being pudgy! |

I love how this far in, IBO still maintains that sense of WEIGHT that the mobile suit battles have, that you really feel that they're several-ton heavy machines clashing against each other instead of just being enlarged superhumans. That last strike with the Rebake's tomahawk throw against Ein that caused his Graze and the Kimaris to collide felt so powerful. Also, that FACE OPEN
Also, it was already suspicious that there just conveniently were fully fueled combat machines ready for the workers to use, turns out it was all a well-orchestrated trap though. As for Kudelia, I suspect she may have used some underhanded tactics to convince Nobliss to go along with her plans (hence why they were able to broadcast without interference), and I'll suspect we'll see exactly what she did next episode. The fact that she was able to turn the tables on him though really says something about how she's no longer taking any shit now from anyone. Be the hero that Fumitan saw you as Kudelia, honor her memory ;-;

Nobliss was wondering what McMurdo was thinking. As McMurdo said don't cut down the money tree.
Kudelia will give him the revolution he craves for. So much that he'd never wish he made her a figurehead. McGillis is amused on the irony of the Gundams of Gjallarhorn of old that protected the world are now fighting each other. Galileo doesn't like how corrupt Gjallarhorn has become orchestrating a massacre. Ein is slow on the pick up. Will he realize what happened that day they attacked Tekkadan was wrong? The reason Crank would rather die than kill children for his corrupt commander was that he had honor that is so rare in Gjallahorn these days? Earth, the Colonies, Mars and Jupiter are now watching Kudelia. Will she start the spark that will put an end to Gjallarhorn? |

1. Gundam Gusion Rebake. Damn the secondary Rider has appeared and boy does it rock (that face reveal. Nergasm). Its great that the show's powers that be gave Akihiro his time at the spotlight by letting him save Mika. Akihiro can only get better since this is his first Gundam sortie. Can't wait to see it used at full potential.
2. Mika having difficulty against the Kimaris mirrors his struggle against Lafter and her Hyakuri. Maybe thats what he meant when he said that he wasn't good against this "type". I think Mika would have performed better with the Katana here rather than the unwieldy Mace. Both Kimaris and Hyakuri are fast machines but Kimaris having a much higher all round performance and firepower (close and ranged....). 3. I like it that Crank's Graze continues on as the Ryusei-Go. Crank I believe was a man with a strong moral compass and I think his Graze's role in Tekkadan's struggles carries a symbolic weight. Maybe Ein will realize that in the end... Not sure how or even if it is possible but it would be a nice touch. 4. Mika continues the tradition by christening Gaelio as Gali Gali. I LOL-ed. Gaelio showed his distaste of the treatment of the rioting workers thereby revealing his honorable side. Will he ultimately assist his buddy Chocoman to reform Gjallarhorn over his loyalty to the organisation? 5. Kudelia was really smart this episode. Hopefully the complainers will settle down now that she is doing something. Character development takes time, no? The show is not perfect but I think people are taking their opinions of a fictional character way too seriously. Anyway, Nobliss was having doubts over McMurdo's plan and Kudelia reaching out to "use" the very same person who used her might have convinced him of her value. It takes insight to do something like that. With both the backings of Nobliss and McMurdo something big can really happen here as without strong backers, Tekkadan is screwed. 3 MS (even with two of Dukes of Hell) versus an entire fleet is suicide. |

Pretty good action this week.
Lol, "Gali Gali". The irony about Gjallarhorn is actually amusing in a way. I'm curious how the other colonies will respond to Aina next time. Should be interesting to see.

Great episode, I cringed a bit on Mika admiring Kudelia before she did anything, but it looks her time finally came regardless. It took to long for her be considered well written character, but better late than never. I am just afraid with this any chance for peaceful solution are gone.
Oh and Akihiro with Rebake tanking like bosses. I like them more than Mika and his Barbatos. Not really, as Mika himself said, he is week against speedster MS, his battle with Kimaris followed almost same pattern as one against Lafter if you look at it.

Clangity clang. Clangity clang clang.
Kudelia went and did it now...blindly jumping into a fight is a REALLY bad idea. Give a speech? Sure. Have your underlings engage in combat with an enemy of unknown size? BAD IDEA. REALLY BAD IDEA. See, Wing Gundam Zero or Freedom/Strike Freedom would have cleaned that fleet up. But Barbatos + Gusion + red grunt suit? Ehhhh...NOPE. |

Anyway, I still need to re-watch the episode later coz I just got back from dinner with my extended family and only got to watch bits and pieces of the episode on my phone. But I like what I've just seen.

Finally we get to see Kudelia as a character start to pay off and the political drama truly begins. What starts off as a desire to alleviate her people from poverty is going to end up as a class warfare between the working class and the noble/elites.
Personally i have high hope for her as a character due to the more grounded nature of the show, really hope to see a more mature realistic approach to the political story. As for the mechs, it's nice to see the opponents fielding their own Gundam and Gali Gali giving Mika a real hard time. I originally pinned him to be flashy but useless side character. Gusion Rebake finally debut in action though disappointingly short.

Also, at the end of the day, picking a fight basically did nothing since the fleet was already trashing the worker mobile suits, Mika launched, and then Gaelio launched and locked him in combat anyway, so the workers went back to being trashed. So in the end, it was basically a needless risk of life. People are saying "oh Kudelia got some resolve!", well, yes, but she also made an extremely stupid call instead of understanding what she could accomplish in the situation. Lacus made sure that her side had the capacity to defend itself and accomplish its objectives. Kudelia instead goes in blind. We'll see if her speech does anything, or Gordon Nobliss can order the giant fleet to back off, because those two rinky-dink gundams and their repainted grunt suit are NOT going to be able to stop an entire fleet. |
