Personally I do feel that the author is building more on the title name sake. After all the first 4 volumes Masuzu got all the juicy bits; and Chiwa had a much lesser serious chance. But after vol 4 (actually, on the very same epilogue of vol 4) I really got this feeling that the author is trying to build things in a way where we can't tell which of them is going to be; and he started that by compensating Chiwa's initial "lagging behind".

I actually read this quite carefully, trying to catch things in between the lines:

I can see how Yuuji Yuuji took a year to release this volume. My guess is that he kind of wrote the end girl to tend towards Masuzu along the way (since she is the best girl with best antics ) when he intended Chiwa to be the end girl. While I don't disagree with the possibility of yours, from another angle, he may be trying to fix his 'mistake' in v7 and it took him a long time to figure how to do it convincingly.

It was not easy but he did a rather good job imo. The way volume 7 was written, if Chiwa becomes the end girl, it will not feel forced nor unsatisfactory. The key point being the BOND (between Eita and Chiwa), which was repeatedly emphasized in an artful way in the volume. The 3 key people who have the most credibility in understanding Eita talked about this unbreakable BOND: namely Eita's aunt, Kaoru, and Masuzu (the former 2 knew Eita and Chiwa for a long time, and the later got a good grasp through his Chuuni notebook).

Why I said artful, is because, instead of pushing Eita to suddenly develop feelings for Chiwa (even though he did become a little more conscious of her this volume), Yuuji Yuuji is trying to sell us the idea through 3rd parties (to the readers and not to Eita) and that Eita himself may not be aware of that BOND that resides in his heart (a plot device that is not that rare in romance series).

Of course, notwithstanding, it's still possible for things to swing back to Masuzu given how Yuuji Yuuji managed to sell me on Chiwa possibility in just 2 volumes, after I was so set into believing that Masuzu is a (almost) confirmed end.

Either that, or, now that Chiwa score has been raised. things could come back to both Chiwa and Masuzu being on equal footing, and it ends as an open end with Eita being unable to decide yet, and Chiwa and Masuzu going back to their usual antics (this time with a smile on their faces), and the Shuraba between Chiwa and Masuzu continues. Though for this to happen to gel with the title, Masuzu must go back to becoming a fake GF. But open end can still happen even without this kind of development of course.

I doubt she'll go back to being his fake GF, since both other them seem to have moved on past that. Not to mention Masuzu even decided to cheer for Chiwa during this volume - though from the comments I've read in 2ch (I'm yet to read the volume myself), it seems she decided to go after Eita again by the end of the volume after whatever happened.

That being said, if Masuzu wants to go head-to-head with Chiwa, a fake relationship won't work - especially not that this point. She'll have to build up a real relationship with Eita (not lovers, could be just friends), and even then she'll still be lagging, since Chiwa has many years being Eita's closest friend, and his prime motivation to become a doctor.

Oh, I almost forgot there's the issue that Eita's mother came back this volume. I suppose volume 8 will be quite interesting.

Hi, new reader here, I was flipping through the images of the volumes and noticed that character profiles are based on some sort of game, like Vol 6 being based off Super Robot Wars, can someone tell me what the others are?

Also, based on the discussions of the later volumes, I am guessing Ai doesnt stand a chance?

Going from a strictly formulaic point of view Masuzu was intended from the beginning to be the end girl. Personally I think these latest novels with Chiwa is either him exploring the characters or bringing out a serious contender. Although the former is more likely.

Now just because Masuzu is the formula girl doesn't mean the author won't throw a curveball and end it with Chiwa or Ai(my pick).

Honestly I think Harem-king ending is only fitting for series with very powerful MC, like a demon lord. Not when he's normal guy.

First, notice he said FAKE harem-king.
Second, the reason he's doing this is likely to keep the status quo, probably because he's too much of a coward to actually reject anyone.

Hime had already given up on him when he learned about his fake relationship with Masuzu, on grounds she thought him and her made a good couple.
Masuzu had already given up on him saying he should be with Chiwa.
Some other spoiler for volume 9 said Ai was willing to give up on him too, but asked him to tell her he loved Chiwa, before she could move on from her feelings for him.

So, even though the girls have been willing to step aside so that he can go for Chiwa, he couldn't make a choice and decided for this fake harem king stuff, and ended up kissing Masuzu as a result of that choice, effectively fooling her.

I'm sure this is very likely going to come back to bite him in the ass.

If this memories stand in their way, then she doesn't need it anymore. She only need to make more and new happy memories wit him.
- Ai who is walking together with keita while crying meet "the source of the problem" that made keita into an anti love.
-Keita who doesn't want to go home decide to stay in ai's place for a while.
- Masuzu get a call from her dad and he told her something unbelieveable...

A very biased opinion: I've never really liked Chiwa, so her being the end girl will kinda piss me off. I'm a Masuzu shipper, but I'll be glad once the end girl isn't Chiwa tbh.

I don't know about making it look as if Masuzu is about to lose. But the last 3 volumes have given Chiwa a much needed leverage, and she's no longer some gag-childhood friend who's only there to get crushed by the competition.
Before volume 6 no one would have found believable that Chiwa could have a chance. You couldn't even call this a love-triangle since Masuzu was curb-stomping everyone else so hard it wasn't even funny.

Now the roles have changed, Chiwa is the one with the best position now, and not through bullshit, but the author going the logical route that Eita and Chiwa's relationship would be the strongest considering they've been the longest together, and that Chiwa is really important to Eita.

I don't particularly like Chiwa - she's easily the girl I like the least - but what the author has done makes sense.

Agreed on the count: In a love duel, the last thing you want to do is peak in the second-to-last volume. This is where the standard drama arc demands that the hero(ine)s be on their knees.

Rooting for Masuzu ending. Because intellectually, she is the correct match for Eita.
