windows xp language recognition
It seems some programs on my computer either can't display foreign languages or doesn't support it. Comicsviewer can't open files with chinese characters in the file name;winzip can't open chinese file names either;for Thunder5 everything in it is displayed as question marks, even the menu. Can anyone tell me how to fix the problem? Is the computer missing some sort of foreign support or are the programs I mentioned at fault? Thanks

Perhaps you need to set your non-Unicode language. Got to Control Panel-->Regional and Language Options-->Advanced and select the language you want in the first bar. You'll need to restart your PC. This can mess up some western fonts, though, but it doesn't happen with most of them.

Did you install the localizations and support for asian languages? Make sure that has happened first.
(interesting how often this question comes up ... you'd think Microsoft would just assume the user experience needed it since they don't ask before installing so many other things we really don't want )

If you're frequently working with programs that have this problem and you need the language support, I recommend doing what WanderingKnight suggested. If you only need to do it rarely, or if you need to work with many different languages and you're having problems with multiple of them, get Applocale. It's a free utility from Microsoft that allows you to run a program under the non-unicode support, without changing your entire system's settings.
