Why is it that large brests, blue eyes, and blonde hair are used to signify beauty in anime? Personally, I dislike all three, but I would like to know how and when this started, as well as your opinions.

It's the stereotypical image of a white women. And western culture has a cultural hegemony on the whole world since like a hundred years ago. there's a reason "westernization" is often considered a positive term unless you live in the middle east or something.

Especially japan. Japan is heavily influenced by the United States especially.

Though that isn't to say that the concept of oriental beauty doesn't exist or that eastern culture is dead.

As someone who ogles well-endowed blonde lasses in animu and IRL, I find this topic very offensive. Repent!

Although I just thought it was the way anime represents Caucasians in general. I'm actually not a fan of blue eyes though. Don't hate them. Just not something to look up doujins to ogle on-screen.

Oriental/eastern-style beauty tends to be very hit and miss with me. And I'm talking about traditional fashion-sense like kimonos and bun hair (bleh) and stuff.

I think two mainstream models of beauty co-exist simultaneously in anime:

The western beauty: "blonde weavy hair, blue eyes, big breast (usually), tall" and the eastern beauty (Yamato Nadeshiko) Long silky black hair, black eye, middle sized breast (usually) and generally short.

You often get both archetypes in anime, especially in harem anime. I don't think there is one that is more prevalent than the other.

By the way a "western beauty" isn't necessarily caucasian, but she is often associated with western style and clothes. Whereas the eastern beauty is more often associated with eastern style and clothes.

They're used to signify a foreign beauty, typically of expensive tastes and European background.

They're not the only archtype for a pretty girl- we have every colour under the rainbow with varying bust sizes.

Each of these three traits (blonde hair, blue eyes, large breasts) are fairly popular individually, but I honestly can't think of a lot of anime characters that combine all three.

I'd drawing... Valvrave's Takahi? Eri Ayase? Darjeeling?

And the last two have fairly normal-sized breasts, in my opinion. I'm sure there's plenty more anime characters like the three above, likely in many harem anime I never watched and/or have forgotten about, but I've never felt that big-breasted blue-eyed blondes were swamping anime.

I don't get the sense that blonde hair is all that more popular than various anime color hairs (red, blue, pink) or that blue eyes is all that more popular than green eyes or yellow eyes or red eyes or purple eyes. You tend to get the full rainbow range for anime hair and eye color.

And I honestly suspect that if somebody number-crunched it, you'd find more flatchested female anime characters than well-endowed female characters.
