So what exactly happens if someone in the US wants to access a FOREIGN site, i.e. not a ".com" or ".net" site or any site which is both registered and has its servers located outside the US? How would the loss of net neutrality in the US affect this? I am just wondering how much the companies screwing around would cause small and medium scale sites to change their registered locations for their sites and whether that would counter-balance the risk of companies causing a general loss of speed on non-corporate websites.

Your provide can block EVERYTHING outright if they want now. Doesn't matter if it's foreign or not. Got some free foreign service that competes with them? Blocked. It doesn't take much, given how shameless they are they'll just throw some excuse like that they found virus or child porn or some such. It's not like they even need to though as what the hell can you do? not subscribe to their monopoly? you already sold away your right to choose another provider long ago. Go and throw your tears into this feedback form that leads to nowhere.

Previously they had to hold back and just screw with companies behind closed doors to avoid public ire because there wasn't full assurance of how covered they were. They got caught and NN was born. But now? This time the FCC legalized it so no need to worry about all that shit, they can literally charge you for wikipedia and google. Don't want to pay? Sorry but in our Kingdom of company Varizon to which you are a unwilling citizen/slave subscriber we take security seriously! That's why only sites with our Ultra Secure Certificates (that we only sell to trusted partners) can be used, and only sites we have verified can be browsed. We're still in the 200 year process of verifying google, facebook, youtube, twitter, reddit, etc until then we have provided these secure superior verizon alternatives with all your favorite ads. If you need these services for work reasons please contact our daylight robbery sales team for a quote on our enterprise offering.

At this point if there's not some great war coming we should already consider it ending well.

The Trump administration has not only fucked with the US but seems to be searching for opportunities to start the fucking apocalypse every week. I think everyone in the WORLD already considers the Trump presidency the biggest joke in contemporary history, but that still won't do anything to stop Trump from stepping in on even more sensitive issues. Garbage internally can be fixed when he gets kicked out, some external issues can be fixed too. But wars? It's gonna take hell and back to fix those.

Speaking of which where do they even find these speakers of his? From PR spokesperson to this FCC guy, every word that comes out of their mouth is one shameless excuse after another. They might as well have a T-shirt with "Like candy from a baby" on it.

Then again, this dialog of theirs seems to be inherent to most supporters... https://www.reddit.com/r/AskTrumpSup...et_neutrality/

It seems there's quite a lot of people of the opinion that it's better not to have NN, even though it doesn't benefit them at all and also all forms of non-violent protest have been clearly exhausted and thoroughly stepped on by these "people" (good luck with speaking with your wallet when the choice is alternative is nothing even for people in supposedly well off areas).

Also, they must have an entire research team of hundreds dedicated to WhatAboutism. It's quite interesting what new ways they find to use it, such as "But what about, these [unrelated] organizations [that we just robbed of any legal jurisdiction by removing NN], they can enforce it! [once in a blue moon in insignificant case that does nothing but fuck with public opinion and give us whatabout-ammo]"

Surprisingly Trump support is not really fluctuating: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com...roval-ratings/ which is quite scary when you think about it. This isn't some god damn reality show, but it seems some are quite happy to with the what happens when the funny man breaks everything philosophy, so I guess they're having a great time enjoying everything burn.

Thank you for the info. But this seems to confirm that it's client side, if I understood you correctly, so it won't directly affect me in Germany at least.

Also interesting:

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/vi..._and_open.html

This reminds me again that we live in a confusopoly. No layman and probably not even many lawyers would be truly able to see through the true situation here. There seems to be a LOT of BS arguments on both sides and most people can do nothing but parrot what a lawyer friend or the favorite lawyer celebrity said. But I wonder how much of the stuff said by the former FCC guy in this video is true. Also seems weird that that MSNBC guy argues against the position of his own parent company.

You're assuming his supporters have the intelligence to think for themselves. Because if they did, they wouldn't be supporting him. All that's left in his supporters are the Nazis-to-be. Again, if they were intelligent to realize what they were resembling or moral enough to realize and care, they wouldn't be supporting him.
Hopefully, this will at least motivate enough people to vote in other occasions in order to at least shackle that thing (or is he a person, I forget at times). Got one seat from Alabama for now at least.

What. The. F(bleep)!
Screw you Ajit Pai and your corporate cronies!
The people said no repealing NN but you and your corrupt pals just ignored them and dismissed them as "fake" (juts like your Orange master on the news) so that your telecommuting buddies can screw the American people and convinced other countries to do the same thing.
I hope someone in the government can stop this dumb act.

The EU has its own net neutrality laws so if you're in the EU you should be fine. Don't know what it means for the UK though...

It really depends on what they do over there with their newfound freedom, and if you use American servers.

He didn't ignore them, though. He heard them and laughed at them. Literally. He "joked" about how he's a shill for Verizon (I think, may have been Comcast) and then made a video of himself basically gloating and dancing about voting against what people want.

It's same thing with GOP's Taxscam making it's way around, Repubs are forcing nothing but historically unpopular measures to enrich their donors. The sliver lining here at least that states are coming out suing over this which gonna back up repeal in litigation for years until the courts decide. So this is far from over.

VPN is better, if you really need it

I believe in a collapse of the current information age. Just like it happened with bronze age.

Also, net neutrality made internet access into a something subscription like service.

You sure are giving up fast.

Legally or illegally people will have their freedom. VPNs or other means.

Frankly re-instating net neutrality is such a huge popularity move that it's bound to get promised back to win voter support.

First some nuance. The video is a discussion on "playing devil's advocate, what is the case against net neutrality." Or in other words, buzzwords and garbage aside, what is actually legitimate concerns and problems.

I personally agree with most of what is said there. It's hard not to, for one it happened, and secondly most points are just a reality of infrastructure; or at least the way it currently works. Of course that doesn't change my view on the matter, since most of the problems can be also argued as "it's a problem because it wasn't treated as a public utility from the get go" with costs being shared by everyone, not some "investment for future monopoly"

Now for some more fun news—–-

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...fiance-of-fcc/

Quote:
The FCC's repeal of its own net neutrality rules included a provision to preempt state and municipal governments from enforcing similar rules at the local level. But the governors of Montana and New York have signed executive orders to enforce net neutrality, and several states are considering net neutrality legislation.

The FCC is already being sued by 21 states and the District of Columbia, which are trying to reverse the net neutrality repeal and the preemption of state laws. Attempts to enforce net neutrality rules at the state or local level could end up being challenged in separate lawsuits.
Quote:
California may be the closest to passing such legislation after yesterday's Senate approval of SB-460, a bill proposed by Sen. Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles).

The bill passed 21-12, with all 21 ayes coming from Democrats. The bill is now being moved to the State Assembly, where Democrats have a 53-25 majority over Republicans.
Besides reversing everything back it also includes:

Quote:
ISPs would be forbidden from using deceptive or misleading marketing practices "that misrepresent the treatment of Internet traffic or content to its customers."

I don't know why everyone is so concerned about this subject. It's not necessary to overreact so much. I do not really care about Net neutrality law. For now I see no changes. But I started to use proxy server. Proxies/VPNs were an important tool before the repeal of net neutrality. In addition to the privacy protection they offer, it's absolutely worth shopping around and choosing one so that if your ISP does something shifty in the future.
