Super 8 - a J.J. Abrams & Steven Spielberg movie
We all know JJ Abrams - of Lost and Cloverfield fame - and of course, the bigwig of American filmmaking, Steven Spielberg. It so happens those two have banded together - the former as the director and the latter as the producer- to give birth to this movie, Super 8, which will be released this year.
JJ Abrams has kept a tight lid on the nature of Super 8, though he did go out of line to state that it was in no means related to Cloverfield (as rumors of a sequel abounded). It's filmed as a homage to Steven Spielberg-era (70s and 80s) movies and will feature a plot involving aliens, Army cleanup (evidently referencing the Roswell affair, even though in reality no aliens were recovered from that area) and a kid who catches footage of the said extraterrestrial(s) on his Super 8 camera. I'm pumped for this one. It doesn't seem to become a failure like Skyline or as empty like Battle: LA thanks to the settings and lead characters (though I'm not that pumped for the kids as leads either way...)
Here's to hoping for the sci-fi movie of the year.

The new Super 8 trailer is resplendent. Great music, wonderful pacing, good acting, great drama. The new trailer is all about mood, setting and characters and their relationships, with the unseen antagonist (if it is an antagonist) merely a pressence that adds drama (albeit fantastical drama) to these characters life. Simply perfect. I couldn't wait to see the picture before, and now I'm almost bouncing in anticipation.
p.s. to those waiting to see the monster (or whatever it is), prepare to wait a long time. This is a partial homage to Spielberg's 70s films (Jaws and Close Encounters specifically), and those creature-features didn't show their "monsters" until the very end of the film. So, do not expect to see any creature anytime soon. |

The new trailer does look really nice. And the music that goes along with it is good too. But they're setting themselves up big time by keeping such a tight lid on whatever "it" is. It better be worth the effort.

Air Force incident (Operation Belttrap) video report exclusive on Yahoo! Movies.
We finally get a glimpse of the creature (whoa! quite large, it seems), and some possibly important little tidbits about the technology it came to Earth with. Just in time for tomorrow's release.

I was kind of stuck on the fence about seeing this in theaters or not. I love msot anything by J.J. Abrams, but the first few glimpses of the film didn't impress me. The latest trailer however really turned me around, need to see this now.

What a wonderful little film. Great acting (the kids were superb), wonderful score, and terrific set piece are organically combined together to create what is probably the best big name live action film of the summer. 88/100.
