Holy Land
Anyone reading this martial arts seinen manga? I sorta stumbled upon it by accident and wasn't digging it at first, but have actually really been enjoying it lately. Sadly new material comes somewhat sporadically but it's still definitely worth a look.

What happens in this manga? Im not going to read it unless I get some info about it thats worth reading.
I dont like reading an unknown manga that doesnt make much sense when you read the Plot Summary, because it can be a really bad and yet uncomfortable that gives you that bad feeling inside after reading it. |

It's basically a high-schooler who was always being bullied picks up a Karate for dummies book and trains himself and becomes a uraban legend named the "Street Gang Hunter(不良狩り)" beating up juvenile delinquents on the street.
The series is already completed with 17(?) volumes published by Young Animal. The interesting part is the detailed commentary about various techniques of martial art and science behind hand to hand combat. |

It's actually originally a book about boxing, but later on he picks up other techniques, and I actually had been wondering why no one seems to talk about it here, it actually is a pretty entertaining manga. Basically he starts off a a coward, and even when he's winning fights he's completely scared out of his wits and just fighting to survive and have a place to belong (he was so bullied in middle school he became a hikikomori). Then later on some drama happens and he goes kinda nutso, that's where the scanlation is currently up to. I wish it would get picked up by a publisher, but the group scanlating is doing a really good job and at a fairly quick pace recently, so I really appreciate their work.

I follow this and also Suicide Island form the same mangaka.
And today finally new chapters of Holyland are out, it's quite entertaining. EDIT: Unfortunately the scanlating group has no translator anymore for the following volumes! Last edited by signorRossi; 2009-03-15 at 14:06. |

Yes, it's great! But what would be the best measure to make an Illuminati translator pick it up again? I tried to leave comments at their site to show that their work is appreciated, but the comment system there wouldn't allow me to do so (don't know why).

I seriously love this manga. It may read a bit too close to the standard shonen formula but where Holyland shines is the excellent dialogue and characterization.
The dialogue and narration induced emotional responses out of me which not many manga have done for a long time. The motivations which characters have can really be related by most male teenagers. What really got to me in chapter 31 was, and how the bottom dropped out of my heart when it told me at the end that it wasn't gonna be bright for them in the future. |

On the contrary, the term "Holyland" has been well-explained by the story...and quite the poignant explanation I might add.
This one has it above other fighting manga for the simple reason that it really shows the despair of adolescent violence, and not "I must get stronger to defeat my evil opponent!" shounen despair bullshit, but something psychological and real. I want the hero to win of course, but I want him to be free of all this far more. |
