Fortune Arterial (PC/PS3 Game, August)

Fortune Arterial, a vampire-themed school life romantic drama/comedy by game-maker August, is getting an anime adaptation later this year. The purpose of this thread is to allow past, present, and potential-future game players to discuss material presented in the game.

Material pertaining to the ending of the various routes should be indicated in spoiler tags (please be considerate), but other than that anything that happens in the game can be discussed here.

Note that there is also another Fortune Arterial Translation Project thread, but the project seems to be dead/on-hold at the moment (perhaps the anime will revive interest).

hey can you make a detailed summary of all the routes? there's alot of stuffs i wanna know about this but cant really play the VN... so far i have only read the manga...

i have so many questions like

1) does she end up drinking blood from kohei? why and how?
2) any more info about her family and about being vampires?
3) how do vampires give birth?
4) can they turn normal people into vampires?
5) is it true that erika and kohei met before and she erased his memories?
6) why is she "attuned" to kohei?

hmm so far that's what i can remember for now... so hoping you can make route summaries for all the girls... and what's with the final route?

I haven't completed the game yet so I can't say anything about any secrets revealed in the true end, but I did beat Kuze and Haruna's individual routes so I'll try and answer your questions.

Spoiler for Kuze:

1) She's neither vampire nor ordinary human. She is a 眷族 (Kenzoku), which the game explains as a "servant" like being that must obey the orders of the master vampire. You turn into this if you drink a vampire's blood. It turns out Kuze's master is Erika's mother. There are lots more to be explained but that's about the extent you learn about in Kuze's route.

2) One of the side effects of being a Kizoku is that your body just falls asleep at random. I don't know the right word for it... Extreme narcolepsy? lol. Anyways, Kuze doesn't want to draw attention from others to the fact that she is an abnormal being so she tends to shy away from people for fear she might fall asleep at any moment.

3) This is her "secret spot" that she likes to escape to when her side effect kicks in. No one at school knows about this spot except her so it's the perfect spot to sleep at. It also seems to have a significance with her past but her route doesn't explain this.

4) The black cat is Kuze's master aka Erika's mother morphed in a cat form. She's following Kuze around, stalking her.

Spoiler for Haruna:

1) Kouhei was about to transfer to a different school because of his parents' jobs. He saw a couple of his classmates playing and accidentally breaking a piece of furniture or something in the classroom. They both agreed to blame this on Kouhei because he's moving away soon anyway.

Of course they didn't know Kouhei was listening in on them and his feelings were hurt. He felt like he would never make close friends as long as he kept transfering schools. This is when Haruna approached him and told him that she'll always be his friend. She told him she'll send mail once every month and this kept Kouhei from being depressed for the rest of his childhood, lol.

2) As far as I know, memory loss was the only effect.

Man I'm so lazy these days ... I don't know how I'm gonna get the determination to get off my butt and beat Shiro and Kanade's routes, lol. I can say that Kuze's route was way better than Haruna's though, that's for sure. ~.~ I wanna hurry up and get to Erika's route already! Ahhhhhhh

2) You only get to hear her voice in Kuze's route xD

3) For whatever reason, Erika's mom is playing sort of a "hide and seek" game with Kuze. She has Kuze desperately searching for her master (she has no clue it's Erika's mom), and every time Kuze finds her, she'll just erase Kuze's memory and start over again.

Part of being a Kizoku means you no longer age and basically live forever; so it's kind of like being an eternal companion to your vampire master. Erika's mom gets really mad at the fact that Kouhei is butting into Kuze's life (of course Kuze is Kouhei's love interest in her route) and distracting their "hide and seek" game ... They have sort of a weak confrontation, and of course Kuze had a happy ending, but that's about the extent of their interaction for now...

Nothing about the dad yet.

4) Enternal life, physical wounds get healed almost instantly, inhumanly fast and strong but not quite up to a vampire's level, must obey the master vampire's orders no matter what

5) Not explained but it sure is funny watching Erika get mad xD

6) Pretty much, yeah

7) She thinks Kouhei is really annoying at first because he keeps following her around everywhere ... And one day, he finds her sleeping at that hill on a rainy day. Of course, it is really strange that she can sleep in the rain... He finds out about Kizoku through Erika and her brother, and events like these sort of lead to him to finding out about Kuze's secret.

I know there are many people on this board that have beat this game so they can hopefully give you more detailed answers on the mysteries. xD

Part of what made her route pretty dull for me is that it had nothing to do with vampires. xD

1) No. She feels really guilty towards Kouhei for forgetting why they even started exchanging letters.

2) I think one of the scenes where Kouhei really starts to open up to her is when he finally talks to her about why they started to exchange letters. Up until then, Kouhei was really reluctant to talk to her about their past.

It's pretty simple how they end up getting close. Haruna is around Kouhei a lot even before you start making the choices to go into someone's route because Kanade remembers him from when they were younger and she interacts with Kouhei a lot. Kanade sort of played the cupid roll here~

3) Haruna mentions how she had a bad relationship with Kanade when they were younger, because Kanade was jealous of the fact that Haruna always had their parents' attention for having a weak body and falling sick a lot... It's a pretty simple and straightforward route IMO. Generic osananajimi friend -> girl has some personal issue with sibling -> girlfriend GET! type of scenario, lol.

That would be incorrect, as she does recover her memory (albeit in the True End, not her path), not too long after you uncover the full circumstances around her memory loss.

Um ...yeah. This is one of the titles that left a very positive impression on me overall (And one must finish the True End of to truly appreciate it -- not that the individual routes were bad, but it is during the True End where the writing begins to shine and all the pieces from the individual routes fall in to places, making it a quite fascinating finish. In fact, i had liked the title enough upon finishing it that i actually managed to get off my lazy behind and write my impressions on it ... a rare occasion indeed (Mostly spoiler free)

Needless to say, i am rather excited about the upcoming anime, and here's hoping they do passable justice to the game's story

and can you summarize the true end, im really curious about it. and it would be great if you could point out those small hints from personal routes that fall in place during the true end, so i can appreciate the masterpiece a little too. since you said the kanade and shiro route are rather dull, i guess i can live without asking about it.

3) I think they give birth like normal people. the vampire part of them is actually something that can be remove? (something like a gem)
4) if my answer to #3 is right, they can use that thing to make someone else a vampire
5) they were both haruna's friend during childhood, but not sure if they've met
6) after he almost drowned at a lake in the area, he swallowed something that is similar to the vampire gem(?)

Well ...you are pretty much asking for some of the biggest spoilers in the story, so do know that if you read this, you will be irreversibly spoiled to major plot elements of the title. Same applies to the above post. Some details might be fuzzy to me as it has been long since i played the game, but ... here goes.

Spoiler for answers, critical mass spoilers:

1) Yes, she does near the end of her route. How should be obvious (), and as for why ... well, as a vampire she has certain needs that have to be satisfied (no, not that *cough*), and Kouhei is ready and willing to contribute, even if Erika isn't very happy about the whole deal. (She doesn't like drinking blood from others).

2) Her family consists of a brother and a mother, and all three are vampires.

3) They don't. Turning someone in to a "vampire" is an artificial process here, achieved by having a person swallow a crystal stone of sorts, which then settles in to the body of said human and grants the vampire-like abilities, such as they are in this title. There are only 3 of such stones, so creating more vampires than that would be impossible.

4) No, they can not, save for transforming someone with what i described above, and there are no more stones available, so ... for all intents and purposes, no.

5) Kouhei and Erika have never met prior to the start of the story.

6) The reason she feels 'drawn' towards Kouhei's blood is the fact he himself has a tiny piece of said vampire stone within himself - there is a lake on the island, where a 4th "vampire stone" got shattered during a far past. While he was young, Kouhei almost drowned in said lake when he went there to play, and ended up swallowing a tiny fragment of said stone that still lingered in the lake. Apparently adds a nice flavor to his blood

7) Regarding Haruna's memory - when she was little, Erika used to sneak out from her home to play; once she met chibi Haruna and the two became friends, but then the traffic accident came ... or didn't, because Erika saved Haruna via her vampiric speed, obviously exposing herself as non-human in the process to Haruna. Realizing the obvious consequences of that, she was forced to erase Haruna's memory (which is one of the abilities vampires posses in FA) and the two never met again, up until their mutual interactions with Kouhei brought them together again, albeit Haruna remains oblivious to all this and believes she indeed suffered in an accident. During the True End, Erika restores Haruna'a memory so the two friends are reunited again. (And we get to hear Erika being called Eri-chan, courtesy of Haruna )

1) I almost had to chuckle here, but that is because of knowing Erika's character and trying to imagine her trying to "steal a bite" in clear state of mind That is something she would never do -- Erika detests the idea of drinking blood from someone else for her own benefit - prior to said event she was using blood packs for her vampiric needs, the very idea of sucking blood from another human is something she is firmly against. Though as things went, she can't rely on blood packs being available forever and at all times, so yeah ... when it happened it was fully with Kouhei's consent (He had been willing to let her do so for a while now, she never wanted to though), and like i said, she was still not too happy about doing it ... chances are he will have to do a fair bit of sweet-talking her in to doing it each time

2) Neither really got to choose - Erika's mother was transformed in to one centuries ago by her father who was also an alchemist and the creator of the "vampiric stone" (My memory is hazy on this, but think it was to save her from a disease that was rapidly spreading through the world ... the other two stones were created so that she could have a "family" to keep her company through eternity). Iori and Erika were transformed rather recently ... i forgot the actual age of Iori, but Erika is indeed only 16(or was it 17 ..) years old. Can't recall what happened to the other ones before them.

3) As far as i recall, vampires in FA can't give birth at all in the natural way.

4) No, Kouhei is completely normal, that small piece didn't affect anything aside from making his blood stand out among the other humans for the vampires.

1) It is never an issue for Erika; in her route Kouhei gets transformed in to a "Ghoul" (Well, that probably gives a wrong impression - a being just like Kiriha, who are basically vampire-like servants to their Vampire masters in FA, they share all the vampire characteristics, minus the bloodlust and have the random "shutdown periods" when their bodies enter brief periods of sleep) so the two essentially stay together for all eternity, and in the True End Erika gets transformed back in to human by having her 'vampiric stone' removed from within her, so that once again becomes a non-issue.

Kiriha ... well, her "happily ever after" is bound to end one day though, and is something they will have to deal with.

2) Kiriha is ancient i have forgotten the actual age, but unless my memory is playing tricks on me, she should be just as old as Kaya (Erika's mother) whom she used to be friends with during childhood, which was about 400 years ago ... might be a bit wrong on the actual number as my memory is hazy here, but several centuries old at any rate.

3) She was turned in to one by Kaya to remain as her "friend" forever.

4) They don't really need to migrate, because they normally live hidden so long as they stay there - the whole School is actually established by Kaya over the centuries, in order to provide safe (located on island, "enclosed location", rumors are unlikely to be taken as anything serious, etc) "hunting grounds" for her "children" until they are ready to live in the human world on their own. (Her mansion is hidden somewhere in the mountains near the school). I suppose there would be the need to do so once they leave the island (And the mansion they can use as eternal hideout), but within the premises of the story there is no need to.

5) It is the grave of her parents.

That is not to be taken seriously It was basically an omake that (one of many) you can access after finishing the game, and was a dream; it doesn't happen (thank goodness i would say ) during the actual storyline.

Kaya was born a vampire. Her father also had one of the "vampiric stones" inside him. It's explained in the game that Kaya's birth was pretty much a miracle (Kaya's father's sister-in-law used some kind of ritual to grant him and her sister such miracle). Realizing her daughter would live forever Kaya's father created two "vampiric stones" and gave them to her so she could, some day, have her own family.

1) is it safe to assume erika and iori are not Kaya's actual children? but wait... hmm. so kaya had only Kuze as a companion for a long time. and then she got iori, and even more recently got Erika... yeah definitely not biological family right?
2) why were iori and erika chosen by kaya to be her adopted children?

1) so in the true end where the stone was taken out, how was it done? was it approved by kaya and iori? what happened to the stone? did they turn someone else into a vampire?
2) how about iori and kaya, didnt they want to die sooner or later? or they wanted to live on as vampires forever?

1) oh so that grave was for her parents, she was just visiting them or the tragic event happened recently?
2) anything unusual about the death... accident, murder, disease or just natural cause?

Ugh I finally got off my butt and cleared all the individual routes. Took so many breaks from the game trying to get myself to sit through the snore fests that were Shiro and Kanade's routes... -_____-
So far, I think Erika and Kuze's routes were at a level way above the rest.

Well anyways, I played Erika's route last and there was a part after the end, before the credits rolled with the black background and there was a bunch of picture text that AGTH couldn't hook... Could someone tell me what that said?

Hmm who would have thought the whole story was going to end up revolving around Kaya! :P She was such a bitch in the beginning but I couldn't help liking her at the end, so cute lol.

Come to think of it Erika's individual route end was really not a happy end at all! Wouldn't Kouhei end up a vegetable like Shiro's parents if Erika keeps sucking his blood? D:

Also, clearing the game just makes you wonder why Kanade even had a route in the first place! D:

You could really tell the developers planned everything out before the smallest work even started on writing the individual arcs (save Kanade's)... The story gets wrapped up real neatly in the end and it made for an entertaining play. I think I had the most fun revealing details about vampires and their traits and such.

IMO, the games weak point was lack of emotional attachment (maybe this is just me). I felt pretty indifferent, no looming 'aftertaste,' having cleared the happy ending. Maybe because the whole story revolved around Kaya's misunderstanding, yet she only starts to get involved in the story at the very last route... Rather than say I was moved by the ending, maybe best way to explain it is feeling of 'relief' more than anything else. "Ahhh finally all these problems have been solved!" Very refreshing feeling but at the same time leaves me wanting more emotional type of ending! xD

Still Kaya is my fav. character. So misunderstood but a good mother and very cute T.T

Anywho, I'll be looking forward to the anime.

No, he wouldn't - Erika would have to make him drink her blood for that to happen (One doesn't turn in to the "ghoul" in Fortune Arterial from being bitten by a "vampire", but by absorbing some of their blood, same for furthering the condition, Shiro's parents ended up like that because Kaya forced them to drink her blood for kicks). Erika can keep sucking Kohei dry each day for all eternity and nothing bad would come of it .... er ...that didn't sound right ... *cough*

Because they could! I agree with the sentiment though, and as i like to say, Kanade just felt like an afterthought to Haruna ... and not a very good afterthought. For a moment there i thought they were going to do something with the tree that Iori had planted as we found out, but in the end that never amounted to anything. Either the idea got scrapped or they were just looking for some way to extend the route i wouldn't know, but the result is as it is this time - Kanade's path was the black sheep indeed and nothing would be lost by her not having one.

Indeed, and this is what made me appreciate the title so much - the individual routes are plenty decent on their own (save for Kanade's ...this could be made in to a chant of some sort ), but the way it all came together in the end and contributed to the whole (without me suspecting it would, as the individual paths were plenty capable of standing on their own and thus not giving away they were but pieces of a larger puzzle). A very good example of quality writing, were the writers had thought out and cared for their work. A quite satisfying experience all in all.

Spoiler for Direction of the anime adaptation, based on the game and Episodes 1 & 2:

I think one of the big changes in the anime is that they've re-framed the story content to be entirely about the development of Kouhei and Erika's relationship. This manifests itself in a few different ways, but the net effect overall is that they've reduced some of the sense of "mystery" or "intrigue" and replaced it with more obvious insight into Erika's perspective on events. It makes some sense for them to do this given that they have only 12 episodes; this basically replaces the way the game developed Erika's perspective through the multiple playthroughs (common Erika route, all the other routes, and then "true ending").

What I personally think this means is that the anime will invariably lose some of the "charm" that the game had, because I really feel that a lot of this came as a result of the fully developed perspectives you had from each character before entering the true ending (which "put it all together"). But I think the anime can still do a decent job at turning this into a more straightforward romance story, and preserve the essence of the characters in the process. And, in what will probably surprise no one who's played the game, it means we'll get the True Ending with elements of the other paths grafted in (which is pretty much exactly as they did/are doing with the manga).

Ok all of this is interesting but I want to clear things too here.....For one why would Kouhei in his right mind even allow Erika to drink his blood?

Does Togi get her blood sucked or it was just the parents themselves that did and died of it due to Erika?

Can the vampires in this game die of having their heart pierced?

Why are the vampires not affected by sunlight?

Why would Seichirou even help Iori after what Erika did to their parents?

So the random girl in the anime nevers becomes a vampire but is only used as cattle and them gets her memory erased? I don't think I can buy memory is erased completely thing at all logically.

That's pretty much what is in my mind right now so I want to spoil myself with the answers. Thanks in advance.

BTW who does Erika suck other than Kohei if anyone?
