Stumbled upon this show by randomly opening one of my favorite fansubbers' website and voila, it turned out to be animated by my beloved KyoAni! Really liked the first episode, it was very dynamic and the jokes were delivered at just the right times. Animation was different, but super fluid and juicy as is to be expected of KyoAni (not close to Hyouka though).

I liked the OP and ED songs, but the show has shown no prospect for future episodes. The seiyuu started out pretty good, but then I remembered how Fukuyama Jun gets old fast. Rikka's had great moments as well and I thought their interplay might save the show, but then the ending scene on the balcony basically spelled it out to me: this show is for middle and high school children, not for you. Besides, the comedy isn't that strong in my opinion, and the gif-worthy scenes are just too many, revealing that KyoAni has no intention of shutting down their meme generator, as that's basically what's been driving their shows for the last couple of seasons.
And I actually liked the OP animation. My eyes refocus for just the correct amount of time, before switching to another side, so it feels like those images get stamped to my brain. Highly addictive. |

Episode 1 works for me since Rikka is a cute girl with an overly active imagination. Who hasn't ever dreamed that they could have some secret super power or hidden potential?
However, I can't help but wonder if the show will still work if the roles are reversed: Rikka being the sensible serious grown up and Yuuta being all "I am the Dark Flame Master! Taste my power! Rikka, you are chosen by the Eye of Truth!" Somehow I don't think it'll work. Yuuta would probably see seen as some weird creep and Rikka would be questioned why she keeps hanging out with him. |

If you look carefully, it's hard focusing on the images if: (1) You're only using one eye. (2) You're not looking at the center. Until then, the OP is ... seizure-inducing.

I dived in expecting a fun time. I got tons of them, so I'm happy.
Two scenes I especially like: First is the train's door opening. I mean there is nothing strange going on, but they manage to exaggerate it to the point that it felt both cool and "WTF?"-driven at the same time. Second one is the stair shot when Yuuta and Rika are carrying the box. The light change and that music works wonder giving off the light hearted atmosphere. In a show like this, while the girls carry the story, for me it's actually the guys who separate a good and an ok anime. So far I like Yuuta. His character seems well-defined and fun enough to watch by himself. I'll need to see more of him to make a judgment though. This made me think that maybe all the obsession about a "dark" show is the legacy of our chuunibyou days? Superpowers, wars, secret organizations, the end of the world, etc. are exactly what Rika and (former) Yuuta have been spouting, right? In the past I too insisted that the "dark" shows are for grown up and a light hearted shows are only for kids. Now I felt that was a really embarrassing thought. I actually watch less of those shows now because it feel...too chuunibyou-ish . Well, not too say that it's bad, but each genre has its own fun. Labeling one as "just for kids" is probably wrong. Yeah, my chuunibyou days, when I discovered Lovecraft and Michael Moorcock. You can imagine the abominations born from when the Great Old Ones meets the war between Law and Chaos and The Eternal Champion.

chuunibyou characters aren't necessarily bad
