The main character usually don't die midways. They might lose, they might get severely beaten up, but they never lose mid arcs.

^ You can't really call that death... I mean, what's the point of calling it 'death' when you could always revive? It's more like knocked out, only that it is knocked out of the body. Anyway, from how it was presented, it doesn't really feel like a permanent one at all. He might lose, he might go into hiding for a while, but he won't be killed. At least not permanently.

Or they can relate to High School DxD where the main hero is considered to be dead and his allies grieve of losing their comrade and after several days past the main hero returns in an insane way and beat the enemy.

Although I am actually happy to see him losing. That's because that lowers the chance of him counting as a Stu and could be used as a fuel for more character developments. See, the hero won't change unless they failed a bunch or got really pressured until they have no choice but to change. It's nothing important, just my inner writer soul responding to it...

Your so called "character development" for Izayoi is for him to have a heroic BSOD and to become whiny and bitchy about his lose, then have someone smack him up(most likely Kuro Usagi) and awake him from his BSOD. A typical shounen cliche as hell plot development. Izayoi is Izayoi, he need no character development. I'm already quite pissed that he become soften as the series goes on and I certainly want any more changes happened to him. Izayoi is a arrogant, trash talking, rude, badass mofo and he will remained as such, any character development will completely ruined his character. I will rather have him die as Izayoi then have him lived as someone else.

Not to sound rude about your post, but I really really hate character development for a character like Izayoi.

Azi Dahaka looks like bastard child of King Ghidorah and Albion from Highschool DxD.

Kind of interesting design.

Well he IS an Escapist-type character. My viewpoint is more of an Author, so it can't be helped. Besides, there are many ways a character can develop, what you said is a really, REALLY narrow point of view. Don't you want him to fully trust his friend and start using his full power? That's a character development there.
