Sounds like he's talking about the Hestia familia having a theme of "rejected" members, or at least outcasts.
No one else wanted Bell, Lili's familia hated her, Welf was being ostracized because he wouldn't make magic swords, etc. Ryu fits in that sense.

since i just read volume 8, I have a very big problem with all of this novel and sudden changes so the whole thing fits in forced ideals.
In volume 7 the main theme was saving Haruhime, even if she was a prostitute, she deserved the same treatment as any other damseel in distress. so why in god's name did they have to force the "she's a virgin" crap down our throat? Honestly if she was working there for years surely someone would've f.ked her even while unconscious. this was too damn big of a plot twist to fit her in a freakin virgin girl category. it was so forced it made me want to hurl. If the author would have just left her as she was, a sexually experienced woman the whole thing would have been more fun later as she would have had an edge over the other virgins. Now it is just plain annoying. that single paragraph at the end of volume 7 dropped my expectations for the series. it was ready to step out form the norm, but hell no let's keep it otaku friendly and make the prostitute a virgin, that sounds soo believable. I will keep on reading, but this single thing ruined it for me.
