If they ask I would tell them, there is nothing to be ashamed about watching anime. And Sometime I would ask some people whether they watch anime or not.

I don't tell people that I watch unless they bring it up as well. It's not that I;m ashamed of it; it's just that I hate dealing with people who have only seen the stuff on TV or is popular. Telling someone you don't like Naruto or Bleach gets you the D: reaction nowadays. I only have one friend who watches all kinds of anime like I do. The rest are of the popular only crowd or don't watch any at all -_- So usually, I don't talk to the later crowd about anime because we can never be on the same page, but my other friend always knows what I'm talking about lol.

In my area, watching anime doesn't seem to entail any negative stigma unlike most other places. But even if it did, I'd still admit that I watch anime. Of course, that's only when it comes to topic, but that goes with any of my other interests (Magic, Video Games, etc.) and not just limited to anime. No sense bringing it up when the other party would most likely not be interested in the subject at all.

I do wonder how a topic like anime would come up. I dont think I've ever conversed about anime to anyone other than friends. Seems like anime is taboo to talk about.

I don't talk, but I don't have to. I have this year's Negima calendar hanging in my cubicle, my computer's desktop is from Claymore, and I've worn my Haruhi T-shirt to presentations more than once......they know.

only if i'm asked, i don't go around randomly talking about my hobbies. most people associate it with hentai anyway...which they pronounce "hen-tay". and i don't want to be grouped with the anime club at my school because they scare me >.>

For the "anime=porn" idiots.... I usually respond,
"yeah.... I hear American television is 100% porn, too. Never watch the stuff"
The sarcasm makes its point and then they're trapped because they have to ask what else does anime do?

But really, I haven't encountered anyone in quite a while who is that clueless... outside of a few teenagers The adults who've notice already seem to know just how pervasive manga and anime is in japanese culture.

Like others have said, I only mention it if it comes naturally during a conversation.

Usually after the common "what do you like to watch on Tv.?" question shows up.

Same here. At work this topic never comes up and when you're going out or wherever you meet new people, the first thing you talk about is not your hobby. It's more small talk and whatnot.

With friends it's different. All of my closer friends are into anime, so it's naturally.

Generally speaking though, Anime and Manga seem to be more accepted here in Germany now. Back then when I started (that was something around 1998, I think) it was completely different. Everything was Sailor Moon back then and you were treated like a kid loving cartoons OR a cartoon porn weirdo. Luckily, it's more emancipated now.

Actually last school year something like this happend... only i was reading a manga in my sociology class and my teacher took my manga from me. He started to read it, and when i was expecting him to confiscate it, he said: "I liked this manga, you should really check out final approach if you like this genre". I was so shocked, haha.

But more on topic... of course i would say i watch anime, i would more than jump at that chance .

My friends just dont understand why I love to watch some Anime like Suzumiya Haruhi,Air,Kanon and Lucky Star.
All of they guys love Bleach,Inuyasha and Naruto.etc.
You know us people, we all have different tastes for anime. Heck my PS2 friends watch Naruto and Bleach yet I'm the only one who doesn't, still they have no problem with it. Besides, we don't force ourselves to what we don't like. To this day we're still buds, PS2 or not.

You know that reminds me of my professor in philisophy of the person (PHILPER). He likes mecha and action, like me. That's why I was so excited that for our final paper, our topic was the "human person", and the medium of choice, Macross Plus! I got a 4 (equivalent to A+) in my paper in the end, so did everyone else (otaku or not).

Unless the people I know are talking about it.
There is no reason why I will, out of the blue, make public announcements about anime.

I tell people if they ask directly about it or ask my hobbies, but just bringing it up in conversation gets me nowhere in my town, people around where i live are all football mad yobs with hoddies and just cause aggro...
I definatly dont fit in in my town lol
Im just the kinda guy who dont hide anything tbh, no point in keeping secrets in my opinion, unless its somone elses secret ofcourse.

well, I don't hide the fact that I watch anime. But I'm not like "Nice to meet you, I watch anime."

It's only when someone asks my hobbies or asks what I watch on TV that I tell them.

I normally say I watch anime if it's brought up, such as 'What TV programs do you like?' or 'What do you do in your spare time', but I don't really start conversations by asking 'Do you like anime', etc.
Pretty much like most other people here...
