anime on tv

most of you might not know but anime isn't on uk tv apart from pokemon and yu-gi-oh (which most people consider kids stuff)
but nothin serious like elfen lied or rahxephon
only anime was ages ago (the sci-fi channel playing cowboy bebop) until naruto and wolf's rain went up on rapture tv
but anyone else in the uk noticed a channel called propeller from 8pm till 3am showing nothing but anime
called anime network?
kinda just sneaked it on i think
i think the uk could do with more anime being advertised
i went to india and even they had there own anime channel showing anime all day
whats the anime like on tv where you live
is it widely popular or just in the shadows ppl thinking its just for kids?
whats your views on anime on tv

Here in Canada we usually get the regular anime during the week (ie. Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, and such), Friday on YTV they have the Bionix block which is Inuyasha, Gundam SEED/and Destiny, Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, and Eureka 7 (you get Naruto on Saturday). Also if you have G4TechTV you get (at the moment, Trigun was last month) Lupin the Third. So you get a fair share of whats readily available in Region 1.

Pretty sure you can order a channel off of Comcast cable that shows nothing but anime for the whole day. But the only channel that really shows much of anything for me is Cartoon Network. They usually show the kiddier anime during the early evening and show some of the more teen/adult stuff at night on a time block known as [adult swim]. At least that's how it was a few months ago. Been a while since I've watched any anime on tv. :P

pff no anime channel, just the usual pokemon stash on Jetix
for Cartoon Network you need a satelite dish or a special chip card
but even then in our country they show H&B stuff only.. so no adult swim kind of things..

a music station was broadcasting naime for a period of time.. i dont think many people knew about that, but it was only Cowboy Beebop, no commercials about it or anything...

long ago when i woul use my antenna in my TV i could get some anime channel, loads of hassle with holding up antena's.. black and white screen with snowy thingies and bad sound.. though it was gone after a while...

anime here is kidish.. simply put.. and only known titles are about Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh and ofcourse DBZ, we had Sailor Moon and CCS but they didnt became that populair, Jetix still ruled over all with their stash of saturday morning cartoons and SM and CCS were broadcasted around 7-8 AM in the weekends, they didnt even finish Sailor Moon, stopped int he middle of the second series, so you could say people find it kidish because the real deal has never been showed on TV with any serious ation of making it a succes or thinking that people might actually like it

my view in all of this is that this country has to open its eyes at what asia has to offer instead of looking down at it as kid like cartoon shows or just erotic shows for dirty old men.. its because of this standard knowledge that people have about anime here that they never actually see the more profitable shows.. i just wish they would open up a channel avaliable for everyone, not just satelite dish stuff or special chip card stuff.. stores should also promote anime more and respect its country, manga is being childishly translated, such as Naruto (english was bad.. but heck check the dutch one out... ) the releases are just horrible.. they sometimes skip volumes or just stop publishing for months... and DVD sales have a lil row with only Cowboy Beebop or the very old Akira, Metropolis series/movies nothing new gets brought out here... nothing gets promoted... and for anime we have to turn to import to actually see some stuff rolling in.. meaning online shopping or to a big comic book store that specialises in comics and fan stuff alike (figurines, marvel comics, DC comics, D&D games.. other RP board games and manga)

Luckily here in Brazil we have Latin Animax. 24h a day, 7 days a week. No censorship, even for animes like Gantz. It's not subbed, it's dubbed but they have done quite a good job so far. And they have licensed very good animes like FMA, Wolf's Rain, Blood+.

However the problem here is that just some of the series goes to DVD. For instance, FMP Fumoffu was already broadcasted by Animax, and a DVD haven't been released. So, since this series isn't broadcasted by the channel anymore, we can't watch it anymore... and this happened with other series too.

But the anime DVD market has been growing lately. Last year FMA and HxH was released in DVD, this year some companies stated that they will release in DVD Samurai Champloo, Evangelion and Heat Guy J. So, yeah, things are getting better.

Here in Indonesia, anime is still considered as "kid's stuff". So there's just a few of animes on TV here. Moreover, most of those animes are dubbed to Indonesian Language by some ABSOLUTELY SUCKS voice actors.

Gundam SEED Destiny, and Initial D is the worst example. They runs on Indosiar every sunday at 10.30 am and 11.00 am. All of fanservice scene including those in the OP/ED scene are REMOVED.

Other anime would be Naruto, but it's just repeated around several episodes (maybe the tv station couldn't purchase newer licenses). And it's EXTREMELY OVERRATED here.

And then there's Doraemon, Shin-chan, and Chibi Maruko-chan. Old series, still repeated past few years.

Global TV, is broadcasting a lot of cartoon series from Nickelodeon (they cannot be considered as anime anyway, at least from my point of view) such as Spogebob Squarepants, Jimmy Neutron, etc.

A few years ago, TV7 (currently Trans 7) was a pretty good anime broadcaster (altough they just broadcast several anime) such as Trouble Chocolate, D.N. Angel, etc. But now it doesn't broadcast anything realted to anime.

The only hope to watch anime here is either you have some satellite receiver and watch it from Japanese TV or download/buy the DVDs.

Moreover, most of DVDs in my country are ILLEGAL (a.k.a. bajakan). One anime DVD containing full episode (fansub) of completed series cost around $.75/disc. And those containing 3 episodes from ongoing series also cost around that.

Why it's being sold? I guess because internet speed connection in this country is still quite expensive for some people. So it'd be much cheaper to buy those DVDs. Cheap connection is worthless for only 56Kb/s resulting 7KB/s download at its best.

Me? well thank god i'm one of those some lucky ones that have access to high speed internet connection (around $60/month for 2.6Mb/s 3.5G connection) so i'd be able to download anime.

Oh, and i haven't heard any of anime licensing in my country.

The only good thing here is there's some anime shop that sells anime goods such as figurines, artbooks, clothings, etc LEGALLY. yay!

I hope this condition would change someday...

Anime seems to have taken another dip again the the U.K, its like a rollercoaster going up and down with the amount of shows being shown. Currently theres only Naruto, GITS with Bravo sometimes showing Afro Samurai and Film4 sometimes showing one of the Ghibli films. Around September last year though there was in excess of 10 different anime showing each week. Perhaps over here the interest just isn't there. I miss the days when I would record anime that was shown late night on SciFi and wake up the next morning and get to watch Eva and Arc the Lad before school.

Over here down under, there's this one morning cartoon show(Cheez/Toasted TV) that often shows some of the more 'mainstream and kiddy brain-washing' type animes (naruto, one piece, dbz, yugioh, pokemon, digimon, sailormoon, etc.). But apart from that i don't think any other stations airs anime on a regular basis, although there is this one multi-cultural channel that likes to randomly air anime movies(usually ghibli films and any other films that's been dubbed i guess eg: Akira, GITS, Steam Boy, Voices of a Distant Star, Blood: The Last Vampire, Spriggan, Perfect Blue, etc) and sometimes even the more diverse series in general (NGE, Samurai Champloon, Bubblegum Crisis, GITS SAC, etc) every now and then, however they do have a tendancy to cut a series short before even finishing its run for some odd reason... this has happened to the 3 out of 4 series that I've mentioned with the only exception being NGE... =/

Currently we have the following cable TV channels in the Philippines that are either part-time or full-time anime broadcasters:

Hero TV - it's Tagalog all the way -- whether it's Atashin'chi, Negima?!, Naruto Shippuuden (I swear, this channel really airs it but only up to episode 40 for now), or even the likes of Utena, Monster, Ikkitousen and Tenjo Tenge. Although there are some slight problems -- mostly with the air schedules or sometimes the scriptwriters employ an odd admixture of Tagalog and English -- the dub work is so well-done that sometimes they sounded like their Japanese counterparts (one VA sounded a bit more like Mamiko Noto; another had the energy and the perkiness of an Ami Koshimizu), thanks to some heavy research work, rehearsal and training they do before dubbing a show.

Animax Southeast Asia - as the first full-time anime channel in the Philippines, they came in first before Hero TV. Based in Singapore and funded by its parent company Sony, it boasts some of the best shows of the decade, a show exclusively devoted to J-pop, and some nice features for the fans. Their biggest flaws is low dubbing quality and their refusal to use either English subtitles or English-language dubs of US releases for airing (example: their Tagalog version of Initial D was a huge failure because they employed a local race car driver for one of the major characters).

NHK's BS2 - also known as the Domo-kun Channel. On some weeknights they've aired reruns of Cowboy Bebop, or some of the newer stuff that can be DL'd right off the net (I forgot the name this show about a boy and a girl pilot tandem with a plane that looks like a WWII Raiden prototype fighter).

WOWOW - honestly, this is totally raw if you want it straight, untouched, with minimal (read: genitals are only blurred) censorship, and you can even use your HDTV for it. In some morning hours (2am-4am) they air shows like Production IG's Ghost Hound.

Cartoon Network Philippines - Although some of their fare aren't too spectacular, this is the only channel that does broadcast US dubbing, including the earlier versions of Naruto.

Meanwhile, the free-to-air stations -- fierce rivals ABS-CBN (plus Studio 23) and GMA (plus QTV) -- have very different policies regarding anime: despite the usual Shonen Jump hits -- One Piece, Naruto -- it's really given a lesser priority, to give way to live action shows or any show that has a bigger viewer rating value; their emphasis is a top rank in the A.C. Nielsen scorecards. In other words, anime is a time-filler, it's for kids and must be for kids; more skin or blood is a no-no.

So, despite the big TLC endowed by the local voice actors and the scriptwriters, the anime they dubbed had its OP/ED cut down to size by the big networks to make way for more advertising time, and some of the "juicy" parts removed (allegedly to appease the MTRCB and the Catholic Church), or worse, cancelled even without any explanation.

Lately, ABS-CBN's move was to air older anime with traditional storylines -- Princess Sarah, The Dog of Flanders, etc., while they broadcast the more familiar stuff -- i.e. School Rumble Second Term and Eureka 7 -- on weekend mornings.

I think the only anime that is shown on my television here is the usual stuff from cartoon network. Other than that, I did catch Tenjou Tenge on a different channel once, but then remembered that I hated that show.

latin cartoon network sucks so much, it stopped broadcasting good anime series and now it only broadcast naruto from ep 1 to 50 over and over and over again its just stupid.

i can't pay for a satellite service so i can't get latin animax channel (anime 24/7) although most of the dub work sucks

You've gotta be kidding me.

Animax has such a piss-poor quality that I wonder how in heavens they convinced the networks to broadcast them. I don't know about the Portuguese dubbing, but the Spanish one (made in Argentina, where else could you find 4 people with zero dubbing experience to make the dubs for 50+ series?) is worse than putting a drill through your ears.

But there are problems with their broadcast that have little to do with the language of the dub. Stretching 16:9 to 4:3 without a proper rescale, for example, is criminal, and I've seen it in every single series they released that originally aired in 16:9. They also suffer from that idiotic stereotypization of the fanbase, which is evident by the sort of ads they air. Plus, except a few (a few!) good series like the ones you listed, the rest of their stock (>75%) is limited to crappy NHK series.

I've got a lot of things for Animax, but respect is not one of them.

If you have cable you can also order Anime Network OnDemand, at least in Canada from Cogeco. They have a bunch of anime dubs which you can watch when ever you have the time. Their line up changes from time to time.

I'll agree with you that Spanish Animax quality is... very poor, but the dubbing, as awful as it is, is much better than the typical English dubs.

However, only ONCE have I turned it on and seen something other than Prince of Tennis playing. I'm not in Latin America that much, but, well, I still kind of figure I'm seeing part of a trend.

Almost the same here in Southeast Asia. But as stated before, despite the fact they carried very competent series, I was disillusioned with the amateurish dubbing, some oddball promotions (what's their so-called Fashion event is for? An attempt at sophistication?), and their approach towards the fanbase that I ended up rooting for Hero TV all the way (shameless plug!) because the folks at Hero are also dyed-in-the-wool fans like me.

The only ones who are watching that AnimAXE (which I refer to it) are either fandumb because they think it has everything "new", or some sadomasochistic types who'll watch it despite the questionable dubbing.

(As a sidenote, I included this news article about the voice acting scene in the Philippines.)

Anime on TV in NA is a disaster imo, mostly horrible dubbing (Edited OP/ED, mostly horrible VAs (very few good ones)), horrible promotions (the commercials running for these animes are so lame that I would rather just have the title of the series on a blank screen for that 10 sec of my life). The way NA handles anime on TV is just horrid, instead of doing weird shit to it they should just advertise them like a drama show, it would prolly draw more of a crowd that way.
