I read a bit of the manga months ago, didn't know this was gonna get an anime.
That being said, don't see myself following this for more than 1-2 episodes. Just a generic survival/battle royale situation that seems to be actually fairly commonplace as far as small manga titles go. Doesn't help even if there's more good stuff to come, it probably has about the most boring 1st episode that aired so far this season.

I can't say I'm sold yet. I've never been a big fan of these survival type anime, since they tend to be too fast paced and kill characters left and right without developing them properly first. They're more about shock value than anything else. This episode didn't lead me to think this show will handle it any differently. On top of that, the main character was pretty unlikable.
I'll give it a few more episode to see if it improves, otherwise I'll probably drop it for another anime (why are there so many anime on thursdays/fridays?).

But perhaps it's a matter of degrees and what type of characters really rub you the wrong way? I can imagine myself not caring about a MC if they really pushed my buttons, but this isn't one of them. |

I remember reading the manga long ago (or at least jumping trough the chapters, so that I would leave the reading for the future).
Won't spoil the future content about new characters and team. However I might as well follow this anime and read the manga again. Considering that manga had run for quite some time already, I don't think they will animate all the chapters right? Not to mention that its still on going as far as I remember.

I just can't believe the MC managed to survive all those bombs that were inches from his face with little to no injury. Yeah I'm guessing this story isn't going to be particularly well thought out and is going for cheap shock value entertainment but these are just first impressions. It was reasonably okay and I am interested in seeing where this'll go.

An interesting start to the series. That first antagonist must be the worst player possible. He kept missing, over and over, on an easy target. You knew he wasn't going to survive.
As for the MC, it looks like the bump to the head caused amnesia, which is so common in action stories, it's not even funny. The getting caught and stuck on a parachute and thrown into an unknown forest to fight instantly made me think of Predators (2010). Let's see where this story heads, as it seems like allies are going to made. We still don't even know what the rules and goals of this "game" is yet.

I don't remember if this has been mentioned, but did anyone else get the feeling that the mother knew something was going to happen to the MC when he left the house? I wouldn't be surprised to learn that she was originally reached out for help in dealing with her son and unwittingly made a deal with the devil that could result in the MC's death.
Spoiler for ep 2 preview:

Episode 1:
This has the potential to really take off, especially here overseas since MADHOUSE has a great relationship with western media. For american folks, I could really see something like this getting a dub and airing on G4 or Spike TV.

I feel rather simpathy towards Ryouta, but at the same time despise him for trashing his own mother that cares very much for him. It seems this series have the same vibe as Mirai Nikki or Gantz, where innocent people get thrown into the middle of chaos and put in death or life situation where they should kill each other.
P.S. Does anyone notices that character design of Ryouta kinda reminiscence of Kira from Death Note? |

I just wonder how the anime will deal with some *issues* about the past of some players. Obviously they didn't volunteer to get on that island. In MC case its most likely his already freaky mother. Throwing a controller at such person wasn't the nicest and smartest idea, especially when you freeload for 2 years playing a game and hopping to get into game company. Just like the blonde heroine reminds you of many shows. Obviously character designs will be reused.

Well this does seem like some crazy/twisted punishment. But who the heck would spend the resources to replicate these bombs (and weird gems) from the game just to punish people who's crimes are at the level of being jerks to their parents? Yeah I know the 'crimes' are bound to vary in terms of extremes, but this just seems weird. Frankly I wouldn't blame the mom too much for this. Guy freeloading for years hoping for a job that clearly isn't going to be extended to him. Of course with the ranking of his team he could just go pro gamer and make some money that way .
Either way I feel the challenge of this series is going to be finding a character who I can root for. I mean will support the lead in not dying, since he's not a terrible human being.

I won't say that its amazing but decent so far. It follows most of the manga from what I remember in the first episode but I can't shake this feeling of doubt and that I'll regret watching it. Luckily it finished much sooner before I had any reasons to bicker about it.
The Company behind Btoom! makes everyone looks like they're cracked up on something, at least they got that image right.

I'm always up for death and despair.
And, while I'm always more than willing to suspend disbelief for a work of fiction, what was a pretty well directed first episode was really ruined by how utterly stupid our protagonist was concerning the countdown timer. Especially seeing as he obviously understood it was a countdown timer when he first played with them. But, death! Angst! I can overlook an author who I can predict is going to try so hard to deliver faux drama that he/she is unable to realize how such drama contradicts acts within his/her writing for plenty of good 'ol carnage and depression.

Sure is hard to root for someone who's obviously too dumb to live, it takes him three tries to figure out how the bomb works?! Come on. His VA isn't helping matters either.
