Blade Runner - Black Lotus

Adult Swim and Crunchyroll have joined forces with Alcon Television Group, a division of Alcon Entertainment, to produce and distribute a new anime series called BLADE RUNNER – BLACK LOTUS that is set to feature top creators from Japan.

Inspired by the critically acclaimed Oscar-winning film BLADE RUNNER 2049, BLADE RUNNER – BLACK LOTUS will feature thirteen 30-minute episodes produced by animation studio Sola Digital Arts (Ultraman).

Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex) will direct all episodes of the premiere season. Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) is a creative producer.

While BLADE RUNNER – BLACK LOTUS’ plot is being kept under wraps for now, producers have confirmed the story will take place in the year 2032 and will include some familiar characters from the BLADE RUNNER universe.

Trying not to get my hopes up too much, but it seems promising. I can't think of better directors for a Blade Runner anime.

Never saw Appleseed, so I can't comment on that. However, with Kamiyama and Watanabe's involvement, I'd say this project is in safe hands.

Hopefully they get full creative control because the last thing we want is executive meddling hampering this project in any way.

Techically GITS is not already anime Blade Runner? plus depends what we got, would be good, bad or passable...still would like an original story over another remake or adaptation

Everytime I see Kamiyama Kenji without "Moribito" in the brackets I cry inside a little.

Inspired by BR 2049? that's not a good desition, there is a reason why that movie failed so hard (oscars aren't a good argument now, everyone knows the political influence on the back).

If they want somethin good, then use the first one and not 2049.

Well those are three names I've never expected to be in the same production, but still the three biggest names in cyberpunk anime.

I think BR 2049 is excellent. I don't get those who hate the movie. The reason it bombed so hard was because it's not a crowdpleaser (pretty much like how the first movie also bombed). This Netflix anime will mostly borrow the setting anyway. The previous supplemental materials for BR 2049 are also pretty nice including the anime one. I can't wait to see this first season by Aramaki, Kamiyama & Watanabe.

Also, I may not trust Oscars when it comes to the animated movie category and some others but the technical Oscars (Best Cinematography & Best Visual Effects) awarded to BR 2049 is very deserving, just like when The Matrix (1999) won 4 Oscars back then. It deserved them.

Just putting this out there that this will be a CG anime since it's made by studio Sola Digital Arts and there will most likely be people talking about this when we get the first look of it.
