Oh well, I expect it will be the kind of estranged relationship excuse for not mentioning him . Just nice to see an actor being cast to be a major character in this thing. I do hope that they don't give up on the NA audience with this movie. If they do a better job of advertising it, I think they could do better in NA than the original did. Oh well, so long as we get more awesome giant robot vs giant monster action...I care not. This is a film series that can appeal more internationally, so might as well embrace that.

Leaked pictures from the Sydney filming. The new suit looks less armored than the ones in the first.

Well the suit was never meant to be armour, anything that can penetrate the cockpit isn't going to be stopped by the suit. It is more logical that the suit be less encumbering to aid agility.

Now this piece of news seem to have escaped a lot of people (it actually dates from last year), but since it hasn't been posted yet:
“Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future” Star, Mackenyu Cast in Pacific Rim: Maelstrom This was back when the film was still called "Maelstrom" and not "Uprising". Also includes concept art of the Jaegers:

The Jaegers (Source: http://www.pacificrim2-movie.com):
Spoiler for size:
They kinda look generic, IMO.

More humanoid than before. Probably due to advances I technology and learning from their experience with the larger Kaiju. Though some of the older designs looked more interesting.

Well, technology marches on, and in this case the result are sleeker, more streamlined Jaegers.
The final judgement of course will be seeing them in action in trailers and on the big screeen: as long as they can maintain the sense of them being titanic war machines their proportions shouldn't be too relevant.

The most successful ones were the "generics" that had a level of versatility to them. So it kinda makes sense for them to go in that direction. |

Yeah if they learned anything then these designs make some sense. Technology gets better so sleaker Jaegers would probably naturally be developed. But also the point is there about the generic types with more versatility were most successful. It's a good move.
In the end I don't have a problem with the designs, but the question is always about how they look in motion. So long as they keep that feeling of being ungodly huge machines, that's good. That was what stood out most from the first movie. These things moved and felt like massive mechs. I just hope overall they advertise this one a bit better than the first. It's a fun concept and can work if they let people know this thing exists.

Merchandise news:
Tamashii Nations has acquired Pacific Rim 2 toy license Considering how NECA was a case of Hit or miss with their run, this is excellent news. I wish they also acquired one for the first movie.
